A heavy price for salt

Cooking salt worth EC$2.85 can prove a lot more costly, as Newtown’s Patrick “Pato” George has found out.

George was arrested on May 25 (2012) for stealing one pound of salt at the Save a Lot business place in the capital Roseau.

In court on Tuesday he pleaded guilty to the offence and was fined $285.00.

The court heard that the Newtown man went to the cashier to pay for the salt but grew impatient because the queue was a bit long.

So he placed the salt in his pocket and walked out.

He was then approached by a security officer who had been keeping close tabs on him.

“I am sorry I did not go with the intention to steal, please charge me….I am not accustomed to doing such things,” a remorseful George told the court.

The magistrate in cautioning him, noted that he had been on good behavior for seven years and labeled his actions “foolish and embarrassing.”

“All you needed to have was a little patience in the line, now you will have to pay heavily for your lack of patience,” she told him.
George was given until June 30, 2012 to pay the fine or serve  one month in jail.

Patience, endurance, and self-control, are the gift of Holy Spiri to us, His nature of Love–the traits by which we do all we do for the glory of God Almighty, Eternal Spirit, who is Love.

But unless we learn that, and to stop doing things to satisfy our self ego, we will always suffer the consequences.

Unfortunately those conseguences are awefully shamefull and embarassing–our controller who is the god of this world simply laughs at us as he takes to his chamber of darkness–the choice we make to follow his wicked schemes. Who can we blame, if not our own selves!

I don’t condone thievery but seriously Dominica? I think our judiciary is lazy and incompetent. The nonesense that gets through to the courts swiftly while murder and hardcore criminal cases languish and conviently get dismissed over time is a sign that these people can only deal with irrelevant issues for attention.

Couldn’t the margistrate in this instance use her judgement and simply caution the man? 285.00 for a pound of salt meantime a passport seller in Ministry acting like she is a conquistador of sorts?

Man shame on mister in the first place. It just wasn’t worth it. His new nickname bound to be Sel.

But the way they dispensing justice in Dominica is just utter confusing. They charge the man a hundred times the value of the salt.

Man stealing all kinds of things in Dominica; man even stealing other man and they getting slap on the wrist. And for a pound of salt they charge the man 100 times the value…magwaysah toneh!

such pettiness, and even worse, the court actually listened and punished! They uphold the law when it comes to dealing with the average citizen, but when the real criminals show up, they give friendly slaps!

Man stealing passport money, forging birth certificates, fire bombing, money laundering, evading taxes and a poor man getting hammered for stealing a pond of salt or box of cheese that is just elevating blood pressure anyway. Dominican stop being petty thieves if you going to steal big. Morals Gone down the drain.
The moral of the immorality is steal big like the lawyers, the politicians, the political advisors; the police hierarchy, the campaign financiers etc. Somebody tell me I wrong and I will tell you about morality

Everything happens for a reason, and i think it is time we learn that processed salt is very dangerous to our health because there are several chemicals there in, perhaps the guy stole a park of disease and some how he was protected, the salt that we should consume is ” seasalt” please be guided accordingly, a health concious citizen.

So they have to do all that for salt?
Bring the man court, have court case, for salt???
And murder trials are being postponed daily,
But the court has time for petty little crimes

      May 30, 2012

The Court is spending too much of its time on these petty cases. Why can’t the law enforcement authorities( the Police, the Court, the lawyers, the DPP Office) spend their precious time catching and prosecuting the major criminals?

      May 30, 2012

That is so true, wasting time on petty crimes and putting off serious cases. Can you imagine that? After they telling people about wasting courts time? They wasting their own time!!!

The government should have a special court for shoplifters. I wonder if they keep stats on the types of crime they procesute?

It’s amazing how people get a criminal record for such trivial matters.
