UPDATE: Arson suspected in major airport equipment fire; PM Skerrit reacts

arson

CEO of the Dominica Air and Sea Port Authority, Benoit Bardouille, says arson is suspected in a fire which destroyed major airport equipment about two miles from the Douglas-Charles Airport.

New information reveals the damage is up to $2-million and a communication tower was destroyed.

Prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, has added his voice to the incident, saying he, and everyone knows, who is behind the incident.

“I want Dominicans to answer, who do you think burnt down the tower at Captain Bruce?” he said. “Ladies and gentlemen, who do you think burnt down the $2-million Communications tower at Melville Hall airport, ladies and gentlemen?”

He said the damages amounts to $2-million.

“Some people burnt down the Communication Tower, cost some $2-million,” he said. “So, the government must now find $2-million to replace the Communications Tower …”

He said as prime minister, he now has to find the money to have the tower replaced.

“Two-million dollars that could build roads, buy fertilizer for the farmers, that could build homes for our poor people of Dominica, that could pay for scholarships for our students to study overseas and here in Dominica,” he stated. “Roosevelt Skerrit must now go and find $2-million because some people, pushed by some people burn down the communications tower and you like me know who the people are. And that is why, we shall go out to the polls on election day to ensure that the Labour Party wins a landslide victory to teach these people a lesson on election day.”

Bardouille said that a backup system is now in operation.

“Fortunately we have a backup system and we are operating as normal but we have suffered a major loss,” he said.

Earlier this week Bardouille said tight security will be enforced at the airport.

The police are now investigating the matter.

This comment by the Prime Minister makes no COTTON PICKING SENCE. If you already know who burned the tower down why aren”t they behind bars? Do you lock people up and then conduct an investigation? Or do you investigate and when you have substantial EVIDENCE then and only then you place people behind bars. And why do you think you are the one who has to go find the money to replace the tower? Is the money coming from one of your PERSONAL accounts or does the money belong to the gov”t? What happen to the other ministers of Gov”t do they have a say or do they just let you do as you please because you are PM? In a DEMOCRATIC society this is done as a team effort not as a one man show. And who ever is responsible for this should be in STOCK FARM. Just think of what could have happened if two planes were trying to land while this tower was being destroyed.

My God, this election has taken away all the meaning of Christmas. Can we as a people stop getting so emotional? after the elections, everything will return to normal, the people who has never met the present Prime Minister or Former, or opposition Leader may never see them except on T.V. those without jobs, will still be without jobs, the taxes will remain or increase or exchange places with another tax. we will still have hardship, single parents will remain, the guys on the road side drinking all day, will still be there, with absolutely nothing to do.
I can talk about this because we just went through elections in Antigua. 1 week after an announcement was mad about a 2billion dollar investment. some were optimistic and some just laughed. However, the investor has seem to disappear. I am saying this to say, that no politician should be trusted, and so there is no reason to destroy your beloved country in the name of party support. they will come and go and all that will remain is our beloved Dominica burden with debts for our children and their 20th generation to pay. Every time we put someone new in office, all we are really doing is empowering them, their kids get much better opportunities than ours, they live comfortably while we are still thinking of another way out.
this election, in my view is such an important one, and so, before going to the poles, ask you self the big question, do we continue to push our way forward and help support this present government on helping to make Dominica a much better place as promised? are these plans achievable? or do we stop everything in the middle and start all over again. and if we choose to start all over again, at what cost, will we continue to enjoy what little we have been receiving? meaning, our strides in Education, care for the Elderly, an everything else that the present Government deems as great benefits.
We are a smart nation, and I trust that we will vote for the right reason on Election day, then ask yourselves” what can I really do to help my country become a better place”?

Good Luck to All and may god bless us all

There are towers from Digical, DBS, etc. at that same location. It is a shame that people say so much nonsense out of ignorance.

First time in the history of Dominica that a fire incident has occurred and there’s no word from the Fire Chief or representative of the Fire Department; no word from the Police PRO or anything. DNO would usually show a photo of the ‘fire incident’ but nope, no photos of the incident yet. People think think think. Just because ‘Scare-it’ says something happened and his labor cronies say so, that doesn’t mean it really did. Why aren’t we hearing more about this from the law enforcement agencies??? These people are so desperate at this point, I would put it past them to make up this incident…

    • Lol!
      December 4, 2014

And in addition, I think DNO should try to verify the veracity of this so-called ‘incident’ as it’s in the public’s interest to know.

If it is deliberate, it has to be understood that these kinds of acts must be condemned in the strongest possible terms, and those responsible must be found and must be made to pay for this act. This is not the property of the Prime Minister or any other Minister of Government. This is the Asset of the PEOPLE of Dominica. Dominicans are made poorer by the value of the Asset, be it $1 Million or $2 Million. This has no part in an election campaign.
The effort to make political capital of this unfortunate act is equally undeserving, and Dominicans must wake up and smell the coffee; look at the bigger picture. When Democracy is under threat and the freedom and liberty of a people are being eroded, social unrest, social disorder creeps in and fills the void. In this day and age, no people who have enjoyed democracy and freedom including freedom to FREE and FAIR elections will allow these to be taken away from them. Many sacrificed their lives for this way of life and many more will undoubtedly be prepared to do that the protect it.
Governments today and those in the future must never forget that reality.

Soooo your plan was to destroy the communictions system to disrupt flights in and out of Dominica, let me be more clearer, you try to criple the operations at the Airport so it will affect the daily incoming flights that would bring people to Dominica to Vote!! Time is running out so they had to try something……

  31. Reon88
    December 4, 2014

Let’s try to be realistic, which is something that is rare between members of both parties in Dominica.
The UWP asked people to go to the airport to engage Dominicans they thought were involved in an illegal act.
15 years ago I worked with the election committee and managed one of the polling stations. During our training it was emphasized that people who lived out of the country for more than 5 years were not illegible to vote, so the UWP is right in their accretion that a crime is being or about to be committed. I know a cousin of mine that has lived in Guadeloupe for over 30 years and is now in Dominica to vote.
Now I listen to almost every meeting, conventions and interviews conducted by the united workers party and not ONCE I heard anyone advocate violence.
The last time I checked demonstrations are legal and are our rights and is seen daily all over the world. We all know that demonstrations can turn violent but this have not prevented people from all over the world to demonstrate.
The UWP called a demonstration and when they realized that it could turn deadly called it off. Now an idiot and zealous (Maybe) workers supporter have set the fire but there is no way we can blame the UWP. We have to understand that there are a large number of Dominicans who feels disenfranchised by this government and when people feel that way they make stupid emotional decisions. No way am I condoning this behavior and I hope the perpetrator is captured and dealt with.
Should we blame Michael Brown parents? They called for peaceful demonstration and people burned down Ferguson. This fire did not even happen during a UWP demonstration.

Firstly every major government building, airport, seaport etc should have some sort of closed circuit security monitoring system. Secondly, a thorough investigation needs to be conducted and the perpetrators be brought to justice and charge with treason. Finally, Dominicans, this is not about party or colour, this is about Dominica. Shame on the persons who are responsible for the destruction of the aviation equipment in a attempt to sabotage Dominica. It is really concerning to me that people would condone such acts, no matter what party you support, that threatens our national security and neither party needs to make this a political issue but let the investigation run its course.

May God continue to guide the country during the days preceding this election and beyond. Every citizen of Dominica top priority is to be able and willing to pull his/her weight and not the contrary by destruction based on colour.

Please people the site is not monitored regularly and the pod that houses the equipment is either 10×10 or 12×12 and its an air tight building. It is quite possible that the AC unit could have gone out and the equipment overheated causing the back up batteries to leak and start a fire.
In the absence of this it would be evident that it was a malicious and deliberate act. So we should wait for the findings of the investigation.

Can you imagine that, Skerrit is not calling for his majesty police to investigate, he already know who it is , maybe we should ask him. There again, Lenox is waiting for the officers to do their jobs, but he Skerrit knows who. I think he does know who. The police should ask him first. Obviously we have never had any such incidents in the past and so the tower which also serve a number of other service providers has been without any form of daiy supervision or security personnel on hand. So the arson did not take place at the Melville Hall Airport compound. It took place at Captain Bruce in the heights of Marigot.

As EYES see it, the Mathematician is neither political nor an idiot in her/his comment. The individual was just saying if there is a threat to a compound such as the airport, every important area of that compound must be taken into account when planning protective security. If you were not too quick to criticize the comment you would have seen the lapse spoken about

You heard how many people gained access to the US White House including the Queen’s palace? They have done same in Canada or tried. Those places have strict security and surveillance. Criminals always try to find a way.
The criminal who did this must be caught and be prosecuted.
Too many are talking and not praying so the situation goes from bad to worst.

Ok sooooo, they reported a fault…….The building was on Fire……BOOM…..Its Arson!!???…..SMH Dominicans like to much controversy. Firstly there was tight security all day yesterday. Which means, a limited amount of persons went into the airport…..secondly to reach that tower, there is security, which means any unauthorized persons would have been recognised……Thirdly, There SHOULD (i hope) be surveillance Cameras at the point in question. Thus this could have been an accident BUT IF U WANT THE CONTROVERSIAL SIDE THEN ———FOURTHLY (if that IS a word) this smells like the same tactic that was used in 9-11. Lets Bomb ourselves and then blame the person we want people to turn against.

All criminal acts should be condemned and punished irrespective of the perpetrators. I applaud the leader of UWP for condemning this action if it is proven to be a criminal act. If this is a criminal act then then this is an indictment of the Commissioner of Police Mr. Carbon. One would believe that with the recent attention attracted to the airport in recent days, and the Commissioner deploying his men at the airport, with the directive to use deadly force security 101 would dictate that every sensitive area of the airport should be under police security. As a former police officer I remember clearly the events of 1979, and subsequent to that the attempted coup of the disbanded defense force, of which the present president was at the forefront for change. Every possible target was guarded 24/7; this included DBS radio, the water supply, and the transmission station in St. Joseph. Although the magnitude of the events referred to were more of a national crisis the concept of security remains the same.
Mr. Carbon is fortunate in that Mr. Skeritt and some of his followers already know who the culprits are, therefore since Mr. Skeritt is now a citizen like every other Dominican since Parliament has been dissolved I urge Mr. Carbon to have his top brass of the Criminal Investigation Unit have a discussion with Mr. Skeritt in an effort to solve this crime expeditiously, since Mr. Skeritt has confirmed that a crime has been committed.

The destruction of such vital equipment is serious. However, we must be very cautious and circumspect with regard to apportioning blame. The cause has not yet been established but almost immediately insinuations are being made of arson and the identity (ies) of the supposed culprit(s) by people in authority. This is troubling.
In Feb. of 1933 the German Reichstag (Parliament) was largely destroyed by fire, shortly after Hitler had persuaded the German President to issue a decree to suppress civil liberties. A mentally unstable young Dutch communist was arrested on the spot, accused of arson and executed after a summary trial soon after.
The Nazis claimed that this was evidence of communists plotting against the government but it has always been accepted that the fire was set by Hitler goons in order to quell any disquiet about the decree and to justify harsh security measures in the eyes of the German public. It was the beginning of the relentless persecutions of opponents of the Nazi party and minorities, which lasted for the next 12 years with devastating results.
I trust our authorities keep their head and make sure there is an independent investigation before pronouncing their findings.

  77. Just Observing
    December 4, 2014

I am not at all surprised at the comments. This incident is rather unfortunate coming as it were following the events of Sunday November 30th where the leader of the UWP called out the “masses” to go to “Melville, to our airport to speak to those Dominicans, who are suspected of coming back to vote. Can you imagine the scene – the “masses” including those who threatened to pour diesel on the tarmac, those who issued public threats to block the airport etc. etc to prevent planes from landing and so prevent PM Skerrit from bringing “illegal voters” to steal an election they claim they already have 16 out of 21 seats. Can you imagine “Gravel Face” the architect of “people resorting to the guns” if the “rogue police’ does not act exactly as the UWP wants them too. Can you imagine the kind of the dialogue? Luckily for all of Dominica, they had a change of mind. Thank God. But somebody whose mind was well made up regarding the action that was planned could not back down. They had to make a statement.

So if fingers are pointed in the direction of the UWP it is justifiable. The most obvious perpetrator has to be supporters of the UWP. It does not mean that an another criminal could not have done this dastard act. Not at all. But the circumstantial evidence would overwhelmingly point to the UWP and the statements its leadership is known to have made in light of the upcoming elections.

I look forward to a “sweet, eloquent and finger pointing statement” blaming PM Skerrit and his supporters for this unfortunate action of mindless criminals.

    • December 4, 2014

Are you “honestly just observing?” Who can you fool? You have indirectly repeated the very thing that your PL, not PM has repeated. Like him, you must already know who did it. If you guys know who did it why not come out and give the police the evidence so the arsonist can be arrested.
Well, if we are all Dominicans throwing our opinion around, then maybe I am as free as you and the Political Liar to give my opinion. But before I do let me say that if this is arson, whoever did this inexcusable heinous act should be caught and brought to justice and be punished to the fullest extent of the law.
With that said let me tell JUST OBSERVING that your observation is so full of Skerribola that it doesn’t even seem that neither you nor your PL have the capacity to think rationally. It is obvious that the PL is paranoid because for the first time in eleven years he is going to lose grip on the extreme power that has allowed him to think that Dominica is his plantation and all his subservient peasants are ready to revolt.
I am reminded of a passage in the bible, Ezekiel 28, read it JUST OBSERVING. I think both you and the PL should take the time to ingest the content of that passage.
I listened to the PL speech and it seems as though he has really become king. “I now have to go and find 2 million dollars”, he says. Didn’t the President dissolved the parliament on November 4th? How come he is saying he has to go and find? Is he not the P L of the Labour Party? He is also in negotiation with foreign governments on behalf of raises for the public servants. Which government would negotiate with a private citizen on behalf of a government? LADIES and GENTLEMEN the man is a private citizen and the POLITICAL LIAR of a party. Indeed, the infectious disease has made him TOTALLY MAD.

Why or why do we need to resort to such anarchic behaviour? Our preferred party might not be elected, but we still need to unite as a community.

When did Dominica mutate into one of the uncivilised countries of the world?

Please, let us focus and work towards a peaceful election and ask God to guide and protect the elected party and also the unsuccessful party.

      Sad

That’s just the problem. Mutation could take a while, so when the little negative changes began with the badmouthing and hate -spilling against every institution, we should have begun to be on guard. By all means when wrong is being done we have a right to know, but this daily bombardment of negative words and actions was bound to take root!

I think we began to take the plunge when we started attacking pastors and priests and even the bishop who has now been graduated to a blood sucker apparently with the full approval of a particular party! I am sure that we remember that the scriptures warn us about our relations with his annointed people. In my view, if the annointed people fail in their responsibility to God that is for God to deal with, not us!

If we incite people with misinformation just to show how powerful and influential we are, it is bound to backfire on us and everyone around us. I have never been comfortable with the behaviour of Dominicans on the radio. Life and death is in the power of the tongue folks. I am still happy that all of this is unfolding before I make my X on Monday!

        @ Barbara Saunders

I don’t know who you are and I really don’t care . Apparently you have made a vain attempt to rise above the fray of the uninformed. Pastors and priests are not gods, they are mortals like you and me. Training at a seminary and the subsequent deployment to a church does not automatically make one beyond reproach. Quite a few of our pastors and priests have compromised their professions by accepting gifts from the political directorate which render them ineffective in their calling. By looking the other way when wrongs are done, they have effectively abdicated their responsibility to lead their flocks. As a result, those who are fully aware of their transgressions are mandated to speak about them. Regarding your categorisation of pastors and priests as the anointed ones, only God decides that, not man and institutions. If you have convinced yourself that many of our institutions are as independent as mandated by our Constitution, your analysis is as superficial and your view is as myopic as those who see no further than the tip of their nose.

Your tone suggests that the fire at the site housing the equipment was the work of arsonist(s), even without the benefit of the confirmation of investigators. I have extreme difficulty attempting to figure out how you arrived at such a conclusion. I re-iterate, you’re no different from the ordinary, un-schooled Dominican.

      Truth and Justice,

From my understanding, the equipment was at a place in Marigot called Captain Bruce, not the actual airport compound. Mr. Bardouille actually explained that the location of the equipment also housed other equipment belonging to service providers, I guess Lime etc. which remained untouched, so the action against the airport equipment seemed intentional, hence his conclusion that it was arson.

Amidst tight security at the airport someone was able to burn equipment 2 miles from the airport. Ok, that would put the facility either somewhere in londonderry or Marigot or up in the mountains. Furthermore, is that conclusion based on observations by arsonist (according to former commissioner carrette), arson investigator, fireman, or mr. Baduoille himself. I would imagine such a facility would be properly secure and fenced off to comply with international airport security standards.

This is the Venezuela style taking place in Dominica today. Dominica has strongly condemned street protests by the opposition in Venezuela earlier this week which has left at least three people dead.

The protests were held to vent frustration over president Nicholas Maduro’s handling of the inflation-plagued Venezuelan economy, worsening crime and human rights concerns
Reports indicate vigilantes on motorcycles attacked the demonstrators by firing into the crowd and setting off a stampede. Skerrit, if you think you going to make DA like Venezuela you better think again! If you think you going to bring Venezuela troops to fight us in our own land you better think it over! It is sad, shocking and disappointing that someone or some people would do such a thing. Woe to you! That area should be a secure one with supervision. Whoever is responsible for supervising it and other employees, the latter, if any, should be investigated.
Whoever you are who did this so as to prevent planes from landing, you interfered in the daily activities of the airport and airplanes. You have also placed fear in everyone who works at the airport, staff, airplane crews, passengers and others who used the airport today.
God has seen you. He knows who you are. He will mete out his just recompense. God rewards the good and punishes the wicked. You should know that no one escapes from God’s just punishment.
Your day is coming. I hope you are caught soon. If you do, kiss your job goodbye.
You are not a loyal employee and do not deserve to be one. You are not even a loyal national. You act as a traitor to your country. A person or people as you should not be employed in such an area; not at the airport.
May no one say it is not an employee until it is otherwise proven. How else could a non-employee gain entrance to that area if it is supervised?
As the Police Commissioner stated, if caught, you will face the full brunt of the Law. May it be so.
Fellow D/can residents of all, you law-abiding and respectful people, please pray fervently to God that the culprit is found or culprits and dealt with accordingly. I will do likewise.
    God’s peace and protection!

lol thats a joke, 1) in the real world this story heading should be Fire officers battled fire at air Port after report of fire in equipment house or something close. From that story we cant say Arson is suspected, he have to say Fire is suspected of destroying house, it could have been a bomb, you not sure if its a fire.
    2) you mean a million dollars worth equipment 2 miles away from airport hmmm
    3) “I can confirm that air traffic controllers reported a fault and upon investigations it was discovered that the building which housed major equipment was destroyed,” he said. (that’s laughable)
    4) $1-million assessment come really fast.

  110. December 3, 2014

This is uncalled for; however, no one should accuse anyone because no one knows what really happened.
If this was intentional, the culprits should be prosecuted. What is going on back home? Shameful!

  111. December 3, 2014

I actually had a dream about this very thing LAST YEAR!!!!! This is the beginning of some major events. May God help us now!!!

What is going at DNO? Is the election heat catching up with your Server? Since last night your system is extremely slow; slower than a snail and even slower. I could have time to take a snooze, etc.

Admin: there are a combination of factors which have been causing the site to slow down. Increased traffic is one of them. We have been working assiduously to fix the problem. We thank readers for their patience.

Mr CEO are you really serious? You are so effective as a CEO that you transfer all people from Marigot that might be sympathetic to UWP to Canefield airport and you have police camping at the Fire station and you and you airport management forget to secure that expensive equipment. What are you guys really trying? Maybe if your airport manager was not given leave to campaign he would have reminded you of that location.

You mean, from the statement you quoted you garnered that UWP was accused? Come on! Read better than that. Nobody blamed the party. You people have to learn to be apolitical. Any malicious person could have done that. Idle hands are the devil’s workshop. Someone could have done it because this is an opportune time with all this political riff raff. Ideal timw to go unnoticed.

By doing more you can only harm your country. When we act out this way it is we, the people, who suffer. The politicians are only looking for power and wealth. Behind the trashing of character are their secret meetings. After the people fight each other the politicians will move on. They are not the ones who suffer. We do. We need to keep calm and just vote as we see fit.

    • December 4, 2014

I agree with you that no matter what they will try anything and everything to start a RIOT just to stop the election but I’m appealing to my people don’t allow yourselves to be drawn into it .

I am glad no one got hurt from the fire at Melville Hall people the hand prints are on the wall so the investigation should be quick.. I smell a RAT !
DOMINICANS we only have 3 more days before Voting Day be very careful walk away from confrontations and listen to instructions from TEAM DOMINICA UWP… How long not long .

This is obviously a set up. There is something that is missing in this general story as the security was very high today. One can think this is an inside job. And I hope the criminals get dealt with swiftly and harshly as this is very costly damage.
