Brawls prematurely end schools’ sports event (SEE PHOTOS)

The 31st Secondary Schools Athletics Qualifiers at the Windsor Park came to an abrupt halt this afternoon as students from three of the participating schools engaged in a series of brawls around the facilities that came to an end only after the intervention of almost a dozen uniformed and plain-clothed police officers.

There were no serious injuries and at least 13 people were taken to the police headquarters in Roseau for questioning, among them students, relatives and associates of students.

According to reports it all started with two separate altercations between three girls of three different secondary schools for reasons unconfirmed.

The altercations triggered a domino effect that engulfed the event and forced its premature closure.

At present police officers and attorneys are still at the police headquarter in Roseau attempting to resolve the matter.

Dominica News Online will bring more details of this story as it becomes available.

First and foremost I must extend my congratulations to the outstanding athletes of NECS. As usual you have shown what you are made of.

secondly, I would like to hear Alvin ‘Allie the Lion’ Alexander roar.
Roar Allie and say how proud you are of your former school.
Roar and say how proud you are of the North East
    Roar Allie Roar.

Lastly I am expecting the photos of the winning team and the achievements of the athletes on a whole to be posted on DNO. I noticed that without hesitation photos of the incident which took place on Wednesday were posted. I hope that with this same enthusiasm photos of yesterday will also be posted.

I thought it was the job of police officers to police? Why is it such a surprise that police officers should gather at any event where there’s going to be a significant crowd of people. Shouldn’t there be an expectation that if something happens, there is secutiry around?
Is there a different rule for Policing school events? The event was being held in a public place for the public- so definitely, with the crowds gathered, there should be some security present. There was expected to be onlookers, school kids, a mixture of persons from different stages in life. Of course the police should be there especially to ensure the safety of the lil ones!

What i disagree with is the weapon i see being held by the officer. That is uncalled for. Shouldn’t they have more appropriate guns? Were they entering a hostage situation? I do not believe that they are not supposed to have weapons, i believe that in the case of this office, if that’s the weapon he has… it shouldn’t be held in such a threatening man like he is prepped for action. He cold have had better control of the gun…but then again – this is still picture of a moment…so …

But at the end of the day – at any large gathering public safety should be a major priority and if it takes officers to ensure that safety, so be it!

@Concerned citizen: Where does This comment come in Alexander at no point in his report referenced any school if you heard it tell me where, you see you all are out to brew trouble Alexander practiced in the best interest of all concerned if indeed you were following the reports did you at any point here alexander refer to the schools involved –did you not here him say that it is alleged to have been a situation of a man slapping one of the N.E.C.S Females this is the same issues that he spoke about in his 2009 youth address to the nation —let it be known that he is quite aware of his haters he is quite aware that many out there are mad at the fact that he is doing the North-East and his family Proud I have only Known Alexander for Six Months and he has never discredited his alma mater some one who loves their institution of training and continues to push for opportunities for many others whom come from the area …..it is sad to see that because he was the one present on the scene that many of you felt he was not right to name the school from whom the student who was slapped came —now i see why Roseau people will always ride on the backs of you country folks it is for the specific reasons that we as elders create honestly i am a follower of kairi and if the following words hurt anyone well something is totally wrong with you “NorthEastern-People ” Alexander who made all atempts to get officials on hand to handle this situation he is the one getting the slaps alexander who stood outside the police headquarters last night until the last N.E.C.S Student left the headquaters and Alexander that advised that every bus leaving the stadium should be escorted via police especially the N.E.C.S since stones were being thrown in and around town gets the blows his statements on kairi heng program this morning are true though extreme that in the best interest of safety of those students Due to the fact that comment of Friday is the last day having being made by instigators of trouble that the principal of SMS—ORION—AND NEC’S Should ban there students for this years events are quite within range as i said though extreme the students lives were being threatened and due to the lack of police involvement they had to take matters into there own hands —–earlier today the ministry officials in speaking to the same reporter in an update clearly said and i quote “as you have rightly said the events that caused the escalation are in no way related to what was taking place ” this means that Alexander did in fact have his information correct by saying that the Guy was wrong to slap the student regardless of whether he called for a ban on the athletes this year it should be noted the considerable amount of effort he as a reporter and to personalise it a former student of N.E.C did to inform the nation —non of you heard where he asked that all be done within the power of the law to prosecute this individual –let us be fair, wrong is wrong the students who fought were wrong however their teachers did considerable work in getting the matter under control until this irresponsible unsocialized individual caused this fire to burn i support Alexander to protect my students i would have taken the best decision and that is not to return for the finals in a hostile environment as such even if it means forfeiting the championships—–North East remember the idea of you achieving at this level is a fact that will always bring jealousy and you must support your own when they take actions in your best interest

I Am a concerned Shaper who was Born and brought up in the countryside and never was able to get away from the discriminatory rows of town life if many of you dont know the driving force behind Alexanders profession and work is you the people who made and formed him the central balance which he has brought to a station sinking into a sea of political re trick is amazing and for that i think you must be proud of with these last words ponder and think .

@Anonymous: I am just saying, regardless whether or not it is a freindly sport game or what, any such large gathering should always have police presence. You see we have come to regard police as evil and their presence as a sign of trouble. Even if nothing happened but the presence of a uniformed officer puts one’s mind at ease. In the event that something does happen then we have the police right there, even if lets say it was just for simple crowd control. preventing the students lets say from rushing the grounds when there team mates or school mates break a record.
We would have the police for international cricket, football and anyother thing, why cann’t we value our children the same way we would a foreigner or better? Now i do not know where muslim has seen police all over the place but they aren’t! We do have the slavery mentallity and i am not blaming the ploice (presence or lack thereoff) for the way in which individuals conduct themselves. That is no fault of the police. We as Dominican have adopted a very selfish attitude, we are cold towards each other and are slowly unweaving the fiber that once made us Proud to be Dominican. We no longer help ppl from the goodness of our hearts, then again that goodness seems almost not to exist.

Blame us the parents, and Blame the children having children, and the loose morals. The churches… all of them are moot. they say nothing, they do nothing, well I lie they too busy molesting other people’s children, essentially, the fabric of our lives is being torn apart.

We won’t have much to keep us together. When you have children carrying on like adults, and having children themselves, what the hell do you expect????

This is affecting people all over the world, but right here in Dominica, i am soooo ashamed of what we have become. Those little tartlets on the streets at 1pm, peddling their crap like prostitututes, in their school uniforms. Where is the mother to beat her little butt???

First of all it is down right shameful that such an incident occurred. As we all know, it has been the students from the Northeast who have been top athletes in Dominica over the last five or so years. Our students from the Northeast have represented Dominica through out the Caribbean and all over the world and have brought home medals time and time again. It is the down right jealousy against the North east which started this mess.

The worst of all however, is the nasty, backstabbing, bias and ‘never see come see’ , want to be journalism of Alvin Alexander who seems to have forgotten where he came from.

In his obscene haste to ‘be the first to make the news’ this misguided, want to be journalist was busy butchering the reputation and good name of the school from which he graduated. We in the North east say, “wat a shame, wa dutty lowdown shame, maybe a de roseau wata way turn um dottish”.

Dominica is getting worse, crime is becoming the order of the day. More protests, more cow moooolestation, more gun shots, robberies etc. The harsh reality is, the freemasons want this. They want the crime levels to go up. When Tiyani acts tough against crime, why does he get so much opposition? Instead he is attacked, seen as harsh by the Chief magistrate and company limited.

School kids brawling at an athletic meeting, and police officers rushing around brandishing automatic weapons, what a pathetic scene.
One should be asking the police chief these questions. Why were his officers sent to control unruly schoolkids brandishing high powered machine guns?
For godness sake these are weapons of war, not for stopping kids from fighting. What has become of the old fashioned trunheon have they been disarded in favour of this efficient killing machine?

As i have said time and time again on these blogs, we need more police vigilance in our country. Why wasn’t the police present before the incident? The headquaters is less than a block away, come on. Now yes we as a people taking the violence too far, we need to look at ourselves and stop all this foolishness.
I am shocked that the police was not there to provide security, that is just not something i can begin to comprehend. Now it does not seem to have been a case where all the ploice officers were elsewhere on routine patrol and other important matters to have not been able to be at the stadium. One can see from the images on this blog that they were present, uniformed and in abundance once the fight begun. I do not want to say that the police is not doing its job but i figure until i see otherwise i will take that stand that the police is not doing a good job of keeping the country secure. N.B. foreigners this does not mean that Dominica is lawless, we are still one of if not the most peaceful Caribbean nation.

This tell a lot. These children have no morals or values. More disturbing are the adults who got involved. I hope they are criminially charged. That woman with the locks or donkey hair, she going school? What she doing in the park and causing trouble? They should flog her before letting her go. Old people always sa ‘si e pas ni soutiweh e pas ni voleur’. If there is no one to enable and encourage them they would not do it.

Well it`s a disappointment to hear about this brawl and especially that parents were involved. But let`s face it people, when we read about these things on DNO and it`s staring us in the face we say we are shocked, blah blah blah what is Dominica coming to, like these things only started to happen now. Men used to have sex with animals long days while I was a little girl, but these things were very much swept under the rug. There used to be brawls and stuff before, there used to be crime before long days, so why are we so shocked when we hear about these things, making Dominica look like it`s the worst of them all. Let me just say, I don`t condone any kind of violence, but please stop depicting Dominica like it`s the worst ok. It is a beautiful island, with peaceful people. Sometimes we lose our way in life and when that happens we should not just stop trying and give up on ourselves or our country. Let`s always try to promote positives, let stop politicizing everything. I see some people writing if that is the next level, like the government was somehow directly responsible. I am not a supporter of everything the government does, but I don`t think that they were responsible for the people acting out yesterday. It`s time we start taking responsibility for our own actions people.

Yea, Yea, I know it comes from up to down or is it down to down? Q95 group should answer that question! They are the ones who started the hate club: the disrespect, the lack of tolerance, no trust in the court of law, the knocking down of police officers, judges, magistrates, fellow Dominicans, Dominica, or anyone who don’t want to see it their way

Lmao I can’t stop laughing, why is the Police officer carrying an M-16 assault rifle amongst unarmed civilians?? Its a domestic dispute after all among children, So much for police firearm protocol, a police issued 9mm pistol would be the highest caliber allowed for a case like this imo.

“Lovely Dominica, land where the people smile.Oh won’t you come and stay a while, in beautiful Dominica”……..
These are the words to a song, when I was a little boy growing up.

My fellow Dominicans, what has happened to our Country?
What has happened to the respect that we once had for each other?.
Why, oh why are we becoming so violent?
We were once known as a law abiding Nation.
I am asking, what’s going on?. Can someone answer me,please?.

    Profound Peace!!.

i think that there is a lack of good parenting going on in d/a. there was never a thought of something like this happening in my days at DGS. we competed against SMA every year.I believe that parents must install a sense of discipline in there kids from a very young age and do not let up. otherwise our island will become a land of lawlessness.

Recently, OUR PM said that there are too many subjects on the school curriculum and students don’t get enough time to play with each other and socialize.

One question, Mr. PM…..should PE and Sports be removed from the school curriculum too? or should we give them more PE time?

Why do so many hypocrites have to cowardly seek to vent their political frustrations by associating each and every occurance to politics with stupid talk about ‘Next Level” and all this crap like it’s the first time that we are seeing these things in Dominica?

Every since I know myself there have been loads of fights at schools and school events. You remember all the chants of “higas” when those fights occured? and yes, I do know of a few occasions when the police got involved! Also, in terms of violent crimes, one must be reminded of many of the kneck choppings, then drinking of grmazone which ended a number of family disputes in the past.

So my friends, while we all MUST be concerned of crime and violence and public disorder in our society we must stop this nonsense of politicizing everything and a make believe that we have always been ‘so peacefu’ and is only now since Skerrit and the ‘next level’ that any of these things are happening.

PLEASE STOP THE FOOLISH POLITICAL BICKERING AND HYPOCRACY AND LET’S START ADDRESSING THE REAL ISSUES, SINCE ALL THESE USELESS COMMENTS ARE ONLY CAUSING SO MUCH MORE DIVISION AND ENEMITY IN OUR SOCIETY THAT BREEDS VIOLENCE!!!!!!

So none of you ever fight at school, -of play too-bac ,,deface books etc,,,too hypocrites that as we are adults we forgot our school habits—young folks full of energy but just need to be more tolerant—.We can BLAME,,all others or come up with a million reasons –but parental lack of control and baD -HABIT TOLERANCE is a factor. So all you self-righteous souls simmer down and help out where you can

The real problem is US. I say US US US not the USA but US! We have stopped correcting our children and letting them grow up too fast and easy. No moral values being instilled in them. It’s easy to let TV, Internet etc babysit our children. Well we’ll reap all the benefits of that…wait we are already reaping it. Politics and next level is not to be blamed here but us.

If we cannot control our own children at home we should shut our mouths when they misbehave in public. We know the signs and see it but we still do nothing so like cancer this “bad behavior” will spread. We can sing how much papa bon dieu we want but God doesn’t help those who doesn’t help themselves. It’s high time we guide our youth one child at a time.

I am a father and my 13 yr old daughter has a free time, but curfew. I know all her friends, do homework with her and take time to spend with her and speak frankly about life, its goods, its bads etc. I cannot prevent everything that can or may go wrong along the way but at least I’m trying…let’s all do the same.
