Assistant Superintendent of Police, Davidson Valerie, has said Crime Stoppers Dominica has been very effective with statistics showing 20 arrests made since the initiative started.

However, he said, the support of the public is needed.

“So we want to say that it has been effective and if the community can better subscribe to it and support the Crime Stoppers program, I believe the police would be properly assisted in their fight on crimes,” he said at a press briefing on Wednesday.

He noted that the program has been very reliable and forthcoming.

“We have received a number of calls that have come in; we have had a number of arrests done through Crime Stoppers,” Valerie said. “The last statistics since crime stoppers started indicated there were about 20 arrests.”

He pointed out for the last period of 2015, four arrests were made.

“That will include persons arrested and charged and persons arrested on suspicion,” Valerie said.

He stated, however, there is room for improvement.

“It is work in progress and if we have a little more persons calling to Crime Stoppers giving information, a lot more can be achieved in terms of our crime fighting results,” he indicated.

Crime Stoppers Dominica was incorporated under the laws of Dominica on September 12, 2012. Anyone with information concerning a crime can call 1-800 TIPS/ 1-800-8477 or submit a tip online at www.crimestoppersdominica.org

Meantime Police Chief, Daniel Carbon has said that police are in the process of installing CCTV in the city of Roseau and Portsmouth.

“We know that CCTV helps a lot…,” he said. “We had a survey done in conjunction with a member of the private sector around the City of Roseau to install CCTV.”

He appealed to the business community in Roseau, Portsmouth and citizens, who can afford it, to install CCTV.

“What I seem to understand is there are some business places who can afford and are in a better position to install but they are installing for themselves, and if you are installing remember you’re your brother’s keeper as well and so put it a large span that you can capture as much detail that it can capture…,” Carbon remarked.

He indicated also that Dominica will celebrate Carnival soon and CCTV cameras will be installed in the different areas in the City of Roseau.

The real crime is when the police investigate crimes of their choosing. Go and investigate who burn Mano house; who voleur the registry key; who were the armed robbers at the DPP’s office.

Perhaps Mr. Valerie should have been reporting on the operations of the NJIC.

A word of free advice to Mr. Carbon and Valerie – stop playing politics and “sucking” up to the powers that be. Don’t be so boldly political and then ask the public to help in solving crimes; it simply will not work. Do the work that taxpayers pay your for or else zor tout kay sousay sel.

Crime Stoppers is effective. Dominica is a small place and the thieves operate in some corner of Dominica where they cannot be see or heard. They cannot hide forever.

Dec 24, 2010 was the date on which GON Emmanuel’s house was firebombed. Last night was the 5th anniversary and still no resolution on the part of the police. This is 1825 days that have gone by and the police is no closer to solving the case. Has the police drop the investigation? Mr. Carbon promised to address the matter when he came into office and up to this day Mr. Emmanuel is still waiting for a resolution. Please let us have some justice in this case. Don’t wait till the gentleman dies to find an answer.

Since you know so much, are you one of them? It is nothing to be proud of. One day they will be stopped even though it is through their death. Then they will get what they deserve from no other but God.

        Face the Facts:

I totally agree with you :!:

It is wrong to speak discouragingly of any reasonable effort that is being made to combat crime.

Crime Stoppers is a good program. It is effective every place it has been implemented including my own nation, Canada.

The fact that it was adopted in Dominica shows the willingness of “the powers which be” (government, police, etc.) to meet the challenge of crime head on using the best of what is available.

Success is a thing of degrees. Crime will never be stopped in the absolute sense. But it can and
will be reduced. Our communities can be be made safer. People who commit crimes can more often be apprehended and brought to justice.

Maximum benefit from Crime Stoppers will depend on the willingness of citizens like you and I being willing to partner with the program. It will only work to the extent that people are willing to work it!

        Memorize the number. 1-800-TIPS

        Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. Evangelist.
