Man charged with attempted murder receives bail for unrelated offences

A Goodwill man, who had been out on bail for the alleged attempted murder of Mandela Andrew, received bailed again today for five other unrelated offences.

Albert Stevens Jr. was bailed for $25,000 with one surety when he appeared in court today charged with possession of a firearm with intent to endanger the life of Basham Julien, possession and intent to supply 190 grams of cannabis, intimidation of Egbert Peters and Basham Julien with a gun and discharging a firearm within forty yards of a public place – the Kings Lane Public Road – on December 17, 2010 in Goodwill.

The defendant did not plead before Magistrate Ossie Lewis on the first charge since it is an indictable offense which is to be heard at the High Court of Justice, but he pleaded not guilty to all other charges.

Upon stating that there was no objection to bail, the prosecutor informed the court that the defendant was already out on bail for two other matters for which he was jointly charged with Kesler Alcendor and Kevin Richards.

“We have no objection to bail. However, the defendant has matters pending before the court…. attempted murder and one other matter…These alleged matters are additional matters. He is currently on bail,” the prosecutor said.

His lawyer, Gina Dyer-Munro, informed the court that her client was then bailed for $50,000 by his father Albert Stevens Sr. before Magistrate Tiyani Behanzin.

According to her, Stevens is jointly charged with his father and brother Al Ridge Stevens on the drug charges which he pleaded not guilty to today, but these two defendants did not appear in court since they have already been granted bail.

According to the court, today’s bail will hold the same conditions as the previous bond. Stevens is to surrender his passport, report to the Roseau Police Station every Monday and Thursday and not to interfere with the witnesses or investigations into the matter.

This prosecutor is obviously an idiot or he was bribed…This is ridiculous…Even in the most liberal and forgiving countries, attemted murder is an automatic remand until trail…WTF is going on in DA.

in dominica the best sentence for murder and attempted murder should be tit for tic or tat for tat (whatever somebody help me out here )

That man is a real criminal and should have been remanded. The type of crimes he charged for and it seems he is a repeat offender. Why in the world did the prosecutor say “We have no objection to bail.” … I’m really confused!

That Stevens family seems to be a crime family, Father and both sons seems to be all involved in the illegal drug trade and crime in general.

These people should all be in prison until their case is brought to court! The court system is really not functioning properly in the name of Justice!

“We have no objection to bail.” Well then, why stop there? Why should the court system engage in this charade to begin with? Why not send him home and drop all charges? Apparently, multiple offenses before the court including attempted murder is insufficient in the prosecutor’s eye to deny bail. Just where on earth did this prosecutor obtain his law degree from? The public should be outraged.

what will it take for the law to be on the side of the victim, Huh? Some people should be remanded for the safety of the victim and a sense that the criminals don’t have the upper hand.

I grew up with Mandela and his siblings in fortune, that’s ways back. I must say that they are good people. Sad that this guy would try to hurt him. God does not like ugly. Only in Dominica can someone get away with attempted murder. That’s a life sentence where I live.

That’s just real non-sense now! You mean to tell me they didn’t ask for him to be remanded?

    Total non-sense.

  18. Ok then
    January 25, 2010

it appears as though the new charges he just got bail for are related to the previous charges for attempted murder he had. I guess probably the police was only able to charge them recently. But should he be on bail?

  19. Well...
    January 25, 2010

A person like that should not be on the streets. He out on bail for stabbing Della and he still committed all these offences. Mister have no repsect for life or the law. Put him in jail and throw away the guidance.

These fellas are just menaces to society.
