Grand Bay man who threatened to kill parents gets fined

A Grand Bay man who threatened to kill his parents was slapped with a fine after he pleaded guilty to charges of threats and obstructing at a magistrate’s court in Roseau.

The court was told that Maxford Angol, of Morntin Grand Bay, was behaving in a “very aggressive, vulgar and abusive manner to his parents who called the police on December 9, 2012 in what appeared to be a family feud dispute.”

The matter attracted a large crowd in the community and while the police attempted to intervene, Angol’s mom fainted.

During the incident Angol warned the police that they should not enter the yard and if his parent attempt to kick his son out of the house they would be killed.

All attempts by the police to calm him down proved futile and he was arrested. To make matters worse he tried to escape and had to be subdued.

“You have to learn to control yourself and your anger, you need to watch your conduct … also when you see the police doing their work you are to stay away,” Magistrate Candia Carette-George told him.

Angol was fined $750 for the charge of threats to be paid by January 31, 2013 or in default 2 months behind bars.

On the charge of obstructing he was also charged $750 to be paid by March 31, 2013 or in default 2 months in jail.

“Next time calm down and walk away,” the magistrate told Angol after he was sentenced.

I have come to the conclusion that the prison(s) in Dominica are full – no more space etc. or is it that the penal code needs to be amended. I have noticed from reading this news site that criminals are being asked to pay ridiculous fines for very serious crimes that would automatically carry a jail sentence in other Caribbean jurisdictions (and perhaps elsewhere). A person threatens to kill someone and you ask him to pay a fine and go back out there – to carry out his threat? Makes no sense. A man assaults his girlfriend and he pays a fine and move on.. Is this a money issue? A fund-raising campaign perhaps? It sure looks like it and it is ridiculous and does not help the crime issue in Dominica.

This boy has no respect toward his mother. Neither of his parents are in good health. His parents work so hard to take care of this family and today that they are grown up is abuse both gets (shame).

When we send them to prison, we the taxpayers foot the bill. When we fine them, they foot the bill. Some offenses deserve a fine and others deserve prison. Personally, they should have charged his backside $7500. I paying enough tax. Pay your damn fine.

A man threatens to kill his parents and he is just fined? That’s a joke. There seems to be no justice for the innocent in Dominica. Why would a man, I reiterate, who threatens to kill his parents be walking the streets? Where there is no justice, there can be no peace. If things continue like that in Dominica it will be a scary place to live in the future.

Respect your parents fada. Why such a meager fine for threatening his own parents life?

So the man threatens to kill his parents, pays a meager fine and that’s it? What about the protection of the parents? The man should be locked up for a long time.

offenses have become a cash cow for the government/court. Why should the government make money off of people’s bad behavior? with no real punishment and no counseling or rehabilitation the courts and dominica with be over run with repeat offenders. If the courts are going to enforce fines for crimes, I believe the money should be used to fund programs to make productive citizens of those who need help. Those charged should be required to attend rehabilitation classes.

Exactly! that is the trend. It appears that one can work or do whatever to save enough cash to pay for his anticipated criminal activities. It is no different than saving to buy a desired item.

      So sad.

That is so true. He pays the fine and go back to threaten his parents. What if his threats turned reality? What happens now? Who will be responsible? Is it the court system? The government? Whom?
