New traffic rules come into effect; police issue warning

Police are advising the motoring public to follow the rules to allow a free flow of traffic in Roseau and to avoid traffic collisions.

This as new traffic regulations come into effect in the capital on Monday (today)

Police PRO, Assistant Superintendent Claude Weekes, said at a press conference  that bridges in Roseau have been severely affected by Tropical Storm Erika, and to avert or reduce any traffic congestion and to protect a life, traffic has been diverted in a northerly direction through the E.C Loblack Bridge.

“So we are advising the motoring public particularly to follow the rules that will allow traffic to move in a northerly direction along the E.C Loblack Bridge to get to the foot or the base of Federation Drive, proceed left to Steber Street and or right in an easterly direction moving up into Federation Drive,” he explained.

According to Weekes some motorists are already breaking the rules although signs have been mounted for everyone to see.

He said it is sad that the country is going through the aftermath of Storm Erika and there are people who are so defiant and disregarding the rules and the laws.

“It poses a significant problem to the relevant authorities including the police,” he stated.

Traffic will flow smoothly only when the sale of chicken in that crucial location gets a second look. The public road should not operate as a drive-in for a private company. This situation can occur in a place which obviously is not a real country, but the police hands are tied I have been told. DNO can you shed some light on this ?

I have one advice. They have been informed. If they do not obey the law and the signs, then charge them. It is as simple as that.
In their disregard, I hope they do not cause accidents and a major one with injury and loss of life.

This traffic notice isn’t worth the paper that’s it’s printed on. Erect solid concrete barriers to avoid motorist from attempting to cross this bridge. Once again, we sometimes need to protect people from themselves.

Understood!! However, as a motorist it has been confusing, as people have been blocking streets using old signs, pieces of wood, tree trunks etc…….can pass now, later blocked. go here, go there, basically just total chaos. tents in the street by Ferry terminal, and so on.
If proper sineage is done and a cop to regulate drivers it would be more organised. if you are short of cops draft in some volounteers re traffic. I certainly do not wish to break regulation, but its has not been clear whats open whats not.

I agree, but not with this upside down thinking government. So you can enter with any type of vehicle be exit with only a light vehicle, at certain time  Why don’t say a weight amount. And for Weeks when last he have made an arrest, solve a crime, or did patrol :?: Maybe if he left headquarters,( not long walk) and direct traffic at the bridge for 20 minutes, as the P’M’ said you don’t have to volunteer for 20 hours  If he could make it to salisbury during the protest, he could walk to the bridge

i’m sorry but some of your points are so upside down. you only need common sense to understand what was said.the west bridge was always an exit bridge.the notice clearly states that “only light vehicles EXITING the city northwards will be permitted to access the west bridge between certain times. who said anything about entering with any type of vehicle?
