Pointe Michel man fined for beating girlfriend

51-year-old Alex Jno Baptiste of Pointe Michel can count his blessings after he was fined just $2,500 or a seven-month suspended sentence for two years, after he pleaded guilty to beating and wounding his girlfriend.

Court reports indicate that during a brief argument with his girlfriend, Laurel Peltier, Jno Baptiste used a stick and struck her on her head.

Peltier reported the matter to the police and Jno Baptiste was arrested and subsequently admitted to the police that he did in fact commit the act.

When the two appeared in court on Thursday, Jno Baptiste was remorseful and apologized for his action. “I’m sorry for my actions, I do love Laurel but just want this matter to be over and promise it won’t happen again,” he said.

Turning to his girlfriend he said, “Laurel, I am very sorry for my action.”

But Peltier was unmoved. “I don’t accept the apology,” she said sobbing.

Chief Magistrate Evelina Baptiste admonished Jno Baptiste for his behaviour. “When you behave so as a grown man what do you expect the younger ones to do?” she asked. “You ought to be more rational with your behaviour … you acted like a boy.”

He was fined EC$2,500.00 or 7 months in jail, suspended for 2 years.

Is only who police want to arrest for domestic violence they does arrest. When is their friends or padna…they does play it down and delay charge until the 6 months statute of limitations expire. Justice for all…not for some.

I don’t approve of men beating women ,whatever the reason is . I ‘ m from Martinique and my patner chucked me as she fell in love with a mayor assistant in the town hall where she worked , though we had a baby at that time …She used to spend her time at night in the Schoelcher Casino until 3 in the morning , refusing to stay overnight at home with my daughter an me .Though i felt like beating her, even killing her for her bad behaviour , i plucked up my courage so as not to do so and i moved out ( it was in 1997 ) .I suffered a lot from my loneliness , but time has managed to wipe out my sadness .I ‘m a very happy bachelor now !

Do you think a man will just say and start beating up a woman? much less to burst her head with a stick. he made right. He snapped, she got busted. It was only a matter of time. ALL NOW SHE BACK WITH HIM.

A man should never beats a woman if you all can’t
get along move on. To end up in court apologizing
looks bad only when we end up trouble we realize
our wrong doings maybe it was’nt the first time.

Men these days think that they can do women what they want, when they want and how they want, but we women need to know how to deal with these men. some need to defend themselves. there is a saying self defense is not murder but in Dominica it looks like when you defend yourself you are murdering

happy chick you sound so ignorant. I suggest you educate yourself. “Sometimes we ask for it”?…SMH…I feel sorry for you. If she was stealing his money then why didn’t he report it?. “all u bla bla ing”?…what’s your highest level of education?. No man has the right to raise his hand on a woman. You don’t want her then move on. She steals your stuff call the police.

i know this man and this is not his character. Not because he hit her with a stick mean he is a bad person. Things happen and people snap. When she was abusing him, stealing his money and all that no one sees but all of a sudden he is the bad one. i am not saying what he did was right but no one knows what goes on behind close doors so be careful how u pass judgement.Hold tight my friend God will see you through.

DNO although the facts of these court proceedings are available to the public, it may be prudent that you not report the name of victims of domestic violence and related crimes. It’s embarassing enough what she had to go through, and it adds nothing to the story to give her name. especially since your articles are open to public for comment

So who gets the money? the court, I presume? What about the victim, what kind of justice does she get? Further, how does paying a fee address his “anger” and obvious abusive behavior? Do they really think this is going to be the last time? The court keep requesting money lately only to pocket the money while the victim gets nothing. God, sorry for saying that but women should start defending themselves.

At the beginning of each of my relationships I made it very clear that I am not the guy’s child and if he ever puts his hands on me he will regret it for his entire life…

I made it abundantly clear that if in the event this does happen when he least expects it I will either cut off his both hands after I drug him and put him to sleep or I cut off his penis and I was very serious about it.

All my life I never know this man..then all of a sudden i meet a man we get to know each other and he want to come put his hands on me like he my FATHER??? helll noooooooo not this one

Any man who puts their hands on me will be taken care of by me….a man’s lover is not his child…even though he may be stronger than I am, there are many ways he can be over powered by a woman.

I applaud you for correcting him/her without ridicule, unlike the rest. I don’t understand why dominicans can’t address others without name calling. Very sad.

the word is beat and beaten fool

      • waitukubuli-original
        December 7, 2012

You do not have to label him/her “fool”. The correction was enough without the adornment of such word. Why can’t we do things in a civil manner? For as long as we live, there will always be a need for correction. As humans, we all fall short in some areas and need correction. So please, the next time you take the responsibility of correcting others, do so in a constructive manner.

If you understood the purpose of forgiving you would also understand that it is in her interest to forgive him and move on.

      • Irie
        December 9, 2012

I fully understand the purpose of forgiveness….and I suppose this is where you might attempt to quote the Bible for me, but she is not obliged to forgive him, if she cannot bring herself to forgive him for what he did, she is fully entitled to hold that position, after all ‘is who feels it knows it’.

Nobody can prescribe a manner for her to deal with her situation. If her way of preventing herself from lapsing back into the cycle of violence and abuse is by not forgiving him for his actions and keeping her distance from him, well then no-one can tell her that she is incorrect to do so. Already she has made a brave choice by having him prosecuted.
