Pointe Michel woman gets suspended fine

court1Vernelle Lefleur, a 26-year-old mother of two from Pointe Michel who pleaded guilty to wounding her father, was fined $1,000 on Thursday but it was suspended for one year.

Court documents revealed that on April 12, 2013 at about 1:00 pm, Vernelle left one of her two children in the care of her father Veron LaFleur and went to do laundry at her cousin’s place.

However, her father got annoyed that she had not returned after a certain time and went in search of her and on meeting her grabbed her in the throat.

Not being pleased with his behaviour, she took a stone and struck him in his head resulting in him having to seek medical attention at the hospital.

The police were called and Vernelle was arrested for the offence of which she pleaded guilty. Before sentencing her Chief Magistrate Evalina Baptiste asked for Veron, who was absent.

Baptiste had requested the father of the young lady to be in court before sentencing.

She admonished them both for such behaviour and ask them to settle their differences in a much more amicable manner in the future.

I’m amazed at the negative comments directed at the daughter. It seems to me that the daughter just went to do laundry and left her children in the care of her father. The father, on the other hand, left the children alone and angrily attacked his daughter just because he was impatient. Maybe the daughter should not have defended herself physically, but the father seems to be the one at fault here, yet, daughter gets the fine?! That is wrong.

We must evaluate situations. If the father was at home babysitting, why did he get angry with his daughter for overstaying at her cousin’s home? Was it that he wanted to go out? All of us know how long it takes to do laundry, washing and drying. Then, she must have stayed a little longer to have a chat, even chatting with others she met along the way.
For her sake and for the sake of her two children, I think the sentence is fair. I thought this is what could have happened, that she would have to pay a fine. Under the circumstances, I have empathy for her. She did not deserve imprisonment.
I hope they both learned a lesson and to do their best to communicate amicably, be patient and get along without raising their hands on each other. We do know that parents must also respect their children; likewise children towards their parents. The Holy Bible has taught this to us.
I am pleased this case ended in this manner. After all they are father and daughter. You know the saying, “Blood is thicker than water.” They must both curb their temper. I wish them well, peace and happiness with each other.

if he grabbed her in the throat first then isn’t this a case of self defense? who is her lawyer? even i with no court experience could get her off using self defense as a reason behind her actions

** Miss Lefleur – I said this on facebook, but it is very likely you will read it here first**

If you get to read this, I advise you to apologize to your father. I am in no way condoning what he did; nevertheless, it is unbecoming for a child to strike a parent – this is an automatic curse (according to the word of God) – what is know in D’ca as “malyadisyon”.

It matters not whether you are right or wrong but be wise and apologize and settle your differences quickly. If you should first lose him, you will have no regrets.

    Blessings dear

true, but the father need to apologize too, remember :Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord.Ephesians 6:4 so in all fairness they should both apologize to each other.

You are so right, the same thing happened a few months ago where her father nephew Miss Lefleur cousin did the same to his father in Point Mitchel and he was charged more

Miss Baptiste for what reason have a stereotype/double standard attitude when it comes to men, also when foreigners committed crime on the island she charge them much lower than we the nationals, this woman is a hater when it comes to men

Miss Lafleur is a trouble maker, she is quick when it comes to verbally abusing others, her mouth is very filthy, as the saying goes like father like daughter it runs in the family

She need to treat both sexes the same when it comes to crime period

No! I would not think so. It pertained to the nature of the incident, how it commenced and what ensued.
