Police call for violence-free political campaign

Weekes wants proper conduct during the election campaign

With campaigning for the December 8 general election heating up by the day, police PRO, Assistant Superintendent Claude Weekes, is pleading with the Dominican public to keep it clean and violent free.

“We encourage everyone to conduct themselves,” he told DNO. “While we appreciate that everybody has their constitutional right to campaign for whichever political party that they want to but what is significant is the compliance with the law in the exercise of their constitutional or democratic rights.”

Drivers and motorcyclists are being warned to exercise precaution during campaign events.

“We have also warned drivers, motorcyclists to be very careful because we are very much concern about the people who sometimes hang dangerously from the huge trucks or even from car windows,” he stated.

Weekes added, “While we understand the joy of supporting a party, at the end of the day people have to be concerned about their safety and security. We advise that people must be very careful when they go on these campaigns.”

In fact, he said drivers have a responsibly to ensure that people whom they are carrying are safe.

Weekes also sent out a stern warning to citizens that should respect other people’s property.

He said this is becoming a major problem in Dominica.

“People have to learn to respect others property. That is the problem we have in Dominica,” Weekes noted.

He said interfering with property or damaging property has always been a criminal offense.

He pointed out that just last week three men were interviewed by the police in Portsmouth for damaging campaign billboards.

“That kind of behavior took place in the north but no one has been formally charged with malicious damage,” Weekes said.

Weekes was off the job because he use to talk about everything that was wrong the big boys didn’t like that so off he went but since he is back on the job he is low key so hearing him say he is encouraging the public to keep their head on that was a first from him Weekes is not the very same person he once was since coming back to the job.

Maybe, but none of that is on Weekes’. He was born to be a cop and is a man of the highest integrity.
    He should be the commissioner.

Claude, I hope you hvae not sold your soul to the devil.
There is a lot of cocoma-kac that is going on in Da before this election and I hope you will keep your cool to serve and protect the people of Dominica.
Do and say things with an open mind.
Politicians come and go but the police force remains there.

Mr weeks as a former police officer let me say your commissioner and police force is a joke and a political arm of the govt. your job is to prevent crime all the time and u have done a miserable job of that I remember when the police force was respected and trusted, but not any more .stop being politians and do your jobs.

I agree with u 1000% Nevo. Gone are thedays when officers were respected as men fo the law. We have police singing calypso in support of the government and openly campaigning and the Chief like a coonoomoonoo saying nothing. We have a senior inspector from layou and a SUPERINTENDENT from Kings Hill on the campaign trail like they runing for office and no I ne dare say anything  . Hence, Change Is A Must!

      Assertive, NOT Aggressive!
