Senior police officer detained for illegal firearm

Information reaching Dominica News Online indicates that a senior police officer has been detained for possession of illegal firearm and ammunition.

This after a search was conducted at his home, according to reports.

The detention has been confirmed by the police but they have refused to give details saying that they are “still investigating the matter.”

Only a few weeks ago, Special Constable Tino Victor was arrested and charged for possession of illegal firearm and ammunition.

DNO will continue to follow the story and bring you details as they unfold.

Noticed DNO corrected their report. Now the statement reads “The detention has been confirmed by the police…” Where originally DNO stated that “the arrest….”.
Being DETAINED is not the same as being arrested, charged etcetera. DNO, be careful with your reporting.

  3. NO GOOD
    October 10, 2012

Everyone, every entity is so paranoid in dominica.DNO will write a lengthy gossip type story about a blacberry dispute but will write a headline and keep it so about relevant issues. Even Matt Peltier is keeping his views stagnant as a host of a show. Paranoid effects again.

I think DNO needs to publish a more objective article on this matter. This is very inflammatory and inaccurate, simply to attract views. I think Journalistic responsibility and ethics must be at the forefront of what happens here – especially, when you provide a forum for public discussion.

First of all, the Officer was never arrested and charged. His home was searched and nothing illegal was found there.

Secondly, this Officer does not live in a mansion or show any visible signs of material wealth.

Thirdly, the police were acting on an accusation made by a known criminal, who the said officer recently arrested. This is becoming a trend among the criminals – and the dumb Commissioner is falling for it. He is so desperate to prove himself that he is embarrassing the force. I’m not saying that criminals cannot make a “turn-around” but this matter was not dealt with in the usual manner.

This Senior Officer has enemies on both sides of the fence (criminals and fellow Officers) because of how well he does his job!

This new Commissioner is out to prove a point, but he must be careful how he goes about “weeding out” bad cops. What he is doing is very dangerous – he may think he is solving corruption within the force. But I believe he is showing the public inefficiencies and incompetencies therein, giving criminals a sense of entitlement and empowerment.

Because of this Officer’s strong reputation for crime fighting, it is no surprise that people (especially criminals and people who are anti-police) will take this story and run with it.

But at the end of the day, the truth will prevail.

I see that some of our readers are at DNO’s throat as if to say they have published false information in that the police officer in question was not arrest and DNO says that he was. DNO has CORRECTLY reported the facts. The officer WAS IN DETAINED and kept in the company of police officer as the investigation got on the way. Again the officer in question was brought into police custody for probing into the matter but was not placed in the cells! DNO has reported what transpired and cut them some slack please. There is a difference between being DETAINED and being ARRESTED, they are NOT one and the same. God bless DNO!

    • Anonymous
      October 11, 2012

SMH from your choice of words it clearly shows you do not have command of the English language. Detained means you are imprisoned confined or ARRESTED. Secondly the Officer was asked to come in. Get your facts straight and desist from making Defamatory statements.

    • October 11, 2012

SMH, what is the difference between being DETAINED and being ARRESTED? I am asking this question because Webster’s College Thessaurus identifies them as the same.

Also, while it is true DNO did not say the senior officer was arrested but detained, the picture of a person with handcuffs used by DNO leads one to conclude that the officer was arrested. Some people cannot read and they depend on signs. The sign DNO posted right next to the story leads one to conclude that the officer was indeed arrested.

Also, DNO reported that the officer “Was detained for POSSESSION of illegal firearm and amunition,” which according to DNO, happened “After a search was conducted at his home.”
According to indifferent and other sources, nothing illegal was found at his home.
Readers of this news who do not live in Dominica, and depend on DNO, will conclude that a senior officer was arrested for possession of illegal firearm and ammunition. To make matters worse, DNO ended this story by saying “Only a few weeks ago, special constable Tino Victor was arrested and charged for Possession on illegal firearm and ammunition.”
As a Dominican living abroad and not familiar with what is really happening at home, this article lives me with the impression that the police and them must be planning for some war or a repeat of 1979.
I think with more information out there now, DNO should go ahead and update their readers.

This story seems to bring controversy! Firstly, by reading all comments it seems that the PUBLIC / READERS have more than one officer that they seem to be referring to. It is reasonable to state that the story is too broad where specifics / certain details which may be necessary for the readers to comment are left out.

Unfortunately, I think Commissioner Carbon is going about this the wrong way. You see there is a tribunal within the police force to handle such matters.

There an officer can be disicplined and even dismissed.

There is a reason for these tribunals. Perception is very important in policing. One cannot allow the public to see the police as weak, corupt, or untrustworthy. We all the consequences of that.

I know. I understand some of you might say that a police officer is not above the law. That is true. However, when you dealing with disciplinary institutions like military and police forces the approach has to be different.

Yes, a police officer can be prosecuted, but on grave offences. However, if at all this is the making of Commissioner Carbon a police officer with whom I have worked for many years.

As an ex-police officer I say, never say never because one never knows how does the table turns.

    • Really?
      October 10, 2012

When the table is turned we will deal with it, and you are so right about no one is above the law. Breaking the law is breaking the law especially by those who should be upholding the very same law

Before we all jump to conclusions or make up stories, let us all wait for the Police to say the circumstances as they relate to this case.
If he is a current serving police officer, then it is not unusual for a cop to have a gun in his possession.
But if he is found to have facilitated the gun-lobbying that is going on with the criminals in Dominica, then he has to be help to account for his actions.

We Dominicans love to pass judgement on people eh. There is so much going on in the island where we need to place this attention: rising cost of electricity & deceptive practices by the Electricity company, exorbitant food costs, blatant discrimintaion in areas of work (lots of square pegs in round holes) Issues where we (moun domnik) can change for the betterment of our own livelihood. DNO get the facs straight before you release erroneous information in the public domain. Searches at the officers’ home and other premises did not reveal ANY illegal items, ni gun, ni ammuition or otherwise. Neither was/is the officer arrested. There needs to be a clean sweep of the police force this cannot be denied, but lets make sure we get it done right and go after the right people. This man has never been associated with this before now, we all know the names of cops at the top and all the way to the bottom ranks who are KNOWN to be involved in corrupt dealings for yearrrssss….and they still getting promotion and overseas training on tax payers money.

Well well,i read mostly all the comments posted on this website and no one has the story right. Its ashame to read all these comments by you people, and not one has the story right. That senior police officer in question was the one who really went at lenght to keep the drugs off the streets, he is the one that took his job seriously while the high racky were been promoted on his back. The good that you do people never see it,but are quick to judge.
Police went to where the man live to exsecute a search warrant, the warrant was in his name and not the owner of the house, they never showed that letter which the commissioner signed to have that house searched, big police blonder, there were about fifteen policemen on the seen, all having gun and bullet proof vest, what the hell was this ahostage crisis ,the police only went to the house ,base on the what the criminal, which they at the time told them, come one you fools acriminal told them a story and they bought it. Well these police officers need to go back to Morn Bruce for training, nothing whats so ever was found at that man home, and that man is so well trained, do you think he would put him self in that position .That man is a true police man not like those fly by night one which the prime minister remotely controlled. The commissioner is desparate to make a name for himself, he is politically embrassed, that why the other senior officer who he meet there dont like him.trust me he cannot fix the problem that exsist at H Q. the problem is bigger than him,so my people when you write your comment on this website be sure of what you write. The police need to do things better when they are investigating, there are alot of things they did wrong, thats why most of there cases are thrown out of court ,before i end i will say we dont have policemen in Dominica ,we have police boys and we dont have a police force we have a bunch of JOKERS….. TO BE CONTINUED…………

  52. LCM
    October 9, 2012

I am all for getting rid of dirty cops, but the recent increase in gun violence in Dominica was not as a result of Police shootings. I bet my life we know some of those criminals who have guns. We had an armed robbery at the Marigot credit union by for suspects but we yet to get the firearms. They were bold enough to shoot at police.

Why not increase our intelligence on apprehending the ones who are a actually causing the crimes. I say issue every police man a fire arm and make sure its bullet signature and other important details are recorded. If these guns are ever used in a crime it can be easily matched and then the officer will have to answer for it. It is one way of tracking dirty cops. Tino and senior officer are not the only two with illigal firearm. If i was in the force and not issued one I would get one illegal to. Criminals have submachine guns and AK-47. I would have to protect myself and familly. They would catch me with RPGs and grenades.

Mr. Commisioner please go after the criminals, those who recieve bribes while in office and the ones aquiring assests without proof of legit income, and the real gunslingers out there. I know a few and they are not policemen.

Ebey you hoping for the demise of the police officer and his family papa….You don’t know that your “hoping” to see bad things happen to that good family is in vain…I will ask god to return it to sender two fold!…WHO JAH BLESS NO MAN CURSE! Everytime you pass you will see the house and you will see the car and you will “mod!” Sa ka Bwlew

@Is the same thing but hold up!!! You have something to say man? I scroll back twice and read the comments and I’m yet to see anyone comment on the mans’ house or vehicle? Put all you business outside then blame others. You are the only one ranting about his family, home and vehicle and people wishing him bad. You are either guilty of something or the one with the grudge. Bat cow tourjours, pli ta pli twiste.

the talk show former police officers should be searched too. they think they know it all and can hide their own faults by calling for investigation into the police service. they too had guns and dealt with corrupt friends. the reinstated police officer should have known better.

Who really guard the Guards? What about the Police who are suddenly emerging big off illegal activities. Everyone in DA seem to be friends of the other and are afraid to talk. Can we bring in some investigative firms. USA can provide that as part of their friendship to Dominica. Some of our policement need to be investigated. Bring in the FBI and clean up Dominica slowly. Have you seen some houses that are being erected lately, plus the vehicles to match the house. I bet you these people cannot afford the month salaries. These People can not be happy with themselves as they know they did not work hard for these material things that seem to excite them all of a sudden. Be mindful thought that there is an old saying that goes Easy Come, easy go. We are watching

I hope after all the investigation you want. That the people in question you are referring to will be once again vindicated and you baseless claims, foolish, yet laughable requests will STOP

because i guess the name of the constable was released by the police but how can the media call names that aren’t confirmed by the Police, will you pay the law suit? beside you can only publish name when there is a charge.so don’t blame DNO
