Calypsonian ‘Jay Dee’ launches ‘carnival type’ video

Newcomer to the calypso arena, Jude “Jay Dee” Delauney, has launched a video for his rendition “China Man.”

The video, which was launched on Friday, is described as ‘carnival type.’

It was shot in Pointe Mitchel and features other areas in Dominica including the Dominica/China Friendship Bridge, and the state house.

“A video is a promotional tool for an artiste. The video is to get people to love the song and enjoy and understand it. The video is a carnival type video so it is all about enjoying yourself,” Jay Dee said.

According to Jay Dee the song, which he himself wrote, compares the life of a local versus that of a Chinese national living in Dominica.

“The inspiration to write that song was right in front of my face, it is something we see every day … other calypsonians have spoken about it before but not in that sense in terms of comparing the black and the Chinese,” he noted.

Jay Dee is a semifinalist in the 2014 National Calypso Monarch completion.

This is his first time taking part in the competition.

The video was produced by Kunta Charles.

Honestly the imagery alone was enough to make me not want to listen to the song. I classified it as extremely offensive, and as a black man knowing of the black face the white actors would put on to play black roles in the past, which we as black people did not see as a real representation of our race, how could i watch this video.
Listening to the song however I must say that you shot yourself with the video, the lyrics, are offensive at times but for the most part it is Calypso, a social commentary and is a catchy tune. Fire your creative director and your P.R agent.

I’m not sure the way to equality is to become bigots ourselves. Hard to say we are victims if we accept something this blatantly racist.
This reminds me of the offensive black face artists of the 30’s or negative stereotypes of blacks in old american movies. We can say it’s all in a joke or laugh it off that’s easy enough to do. Look how long thy kept the joke running in the US and what it did to our people. This is offensive and embarrassing. We could do better.

This is the height of racist ignorance. Do you think Dominica is the only island with Chinise.

      February 17, 2014

It is RACIST and IGNORANCE. There is way more Dominicans living overseas then what is living in Dominica and every Dominican have a love one, family or friend that they benefit from and that benefactor is a Dominica living in other people country.

MORE IGNORANCE – The Chinese that’s here are making a meaningful contribution to economic development of Dominica. They are here doing what ? open up businesses employing Dominicans, ask those who are employed would they want the Chinese to close up shop and move out of Dominica ? There are some here BUILDING, CONSTRUCTING, and REPAIRING and are being paid by the TAX payers of Dominica.I have not heard of anyone of the Chinese been arrested or has broken laws of Dominica. How many Dominicans are in JAIL, ARRESTED or CHARGE in a foreign land ? How many Dominicans that has been DEPORTED ?

You have a point… But the man say he give up he give in he turning china an so why should he drink kubuli… But in any case there is a lot that the government can do to help support local that they don’t do…. Give incentive, grants to help promote the product… Help in marketing and distribution through advertisement on websites and when skerro go to his delegates conference…you can’t even find a kubuli on Picard Portsmouth… Bet you can’t find it in China either some friendship we have eh…

Tro! did i hear you correctly ? that you are in NEW YORK CITY ? No JOKE that, you are in New York City and supporting a video that is talk against FOREIGNERS ? Oh am so sorry i forgot New York City is the capital of Dominica. The same thing the white and black Americans don’t like Dominicans don’t ask for the uncle TOM’S. Go head shoot you all selves in the foot and then put it in your mouths, well again it would not have been the first and last.

Tell me what jobs Chinese are taking? Dominicans are al renting their properties to them, even those who hate themm. check the new building by provost cinemall. Many Dominicans are working in Chinese stores. People have given up their farms to Hatiens and sit back complaining. What do we really want? Those who have the capital rather sit and count their money. We are making ourselves sound to ignorant when comes to the analysis of world trrends. Check the Bible this is the end of times.
