Nothing’s going to stop this year’s calypso finals, the president of the Dominica Calypso Association Kelly “Ghost” Williams has affirmed.
He gave that assurance after disclosing that one of the semi-finalists, who failed to make this year’s finals, has threatened through his lawyer to get the courts to stop the finals unless that calypsonian is allowed to compete in it.
According to “Ghost”, the calypsonian – Comforter – claims to have been reliably informed that he tied with another calypsonian – Sye, who made it to the finals while he, Comforter, was disenfranchised.
The association president says there is no truth to that claim of a tie, and the show would go on as usual.
He spoke about the matter at Thursday evening’s Dominica Calypso “Kaiso” Hall of Fame Induction, holding up what he said was a letter from Comforter’s lawyer about the alleged mistreatment of Comforter, who has been one of the crowd favorites this season.
Kelly “Ghost” Williams said there was no basis for the Comforter claim, and his association couldn’t take the threat of an injunction against the 2012 calypso finals seriously.

Comforter like Sye u can’t sing neither can u use your voice properly to sing.Your song is just a roro and not good enough for a competition even if what u’re saying about the the pastor is true.The pastor seem to have a stronger power than some of u guys as u all were defeated in some mysterious way.Anyway Sye sounds better than u and his lyrics makes more sense and is also better presented.

It was said on Q95 that Ghost did not handle the situation well enough and I agree. Ghost should have rolled on the floor with laughter in front of comforter because the man just prove himself as the biggest pappyshow in calypso. Not even Sour sour and DBS ever act like that. And they talking about Gangster King and then turning around when things don’t go their way and talking about lawyer saying they will stop the show? Sounds like a gangster move to me.

The main opposition party here set an example of not accepting defeat graciously and many of you hypocrites who comment here support them, so why condemn Comforter???
If it is good for the goose, then it might as well be good for the gander. While I totally disagree with the man’s approach and I believe he should just accept the decision, at the end of it all it is his DEMOCRATIC RIGHT to go to the courts if he so wishes, and UNLIKE the UWP, he should accept the court’s ruling even if it isn’t in his favour.
I understand Comforter’s stance and I firmly believe that he has a legitimate claim. He deserves respect just like any other calypsonian.
The DCA should simply release the results and reply professionally to the Comforter’s claim. Not try to act like he’s better than Comforter.
Personally I believe that Comforter should be in the final nine but that’s how it is.

If there is foul play which doesn’t surprise me at all then it needs to be highlighted and brought to the forefront then dealt with accordingly.

I listened to the president’s response on Matt and obviously he danced around the question suggesting that he admitted to comforter on the phone by saying “a judge spoke”. This is what gave me this uneasy feeling. In addition I find it hard to believe that Victor “comforter”would make this up. I find the president of the calypso association very unprofessional. The work that these calypsonians put into their product should not be marginalized and so the guys should be able to see the judges assessment. Allowing such would help the calypsonian improve.
I also believe that Victor was darn good on the semi finals. The man has one of the better vocals among the calypsonians-Great tone, control and was the only calypsonian who maintained his key throughout the entire delivery. That is not to say that he should or should not have been in the finals but to express that thief is a possibility that the judges may have been in a tangled situation.
I grew up in Portsmouth and I know Victor well enough that I am not surprise at his reaction.A possibility very argumentative,head strong,controversial personality. He is not afraid to call it as it is to him.I always admired his talent -an untried and great vocalist. His abrasive personality had always been sort of a turn off.

It needs to be investigated now, now in 55 years time in order to get to the bottom of it, as we all know that from day dot since calypso competitions started to present day, that biasness, unfairness and underhanded decisions do take place, whether its face don’t fit, an unknown or just not liked by those in the judging chairs.
Perhaps the judging should be opened to the general listening and viewing public alike both on the island and around the globe, so that we can vote after hearing their deliveries and performance online.
That way the people will always speak and in most cases speak truth, as opposed to the judges having their own agendas all through the competition heats.
Comforter stay in the comfort of your home and listen to the calypso finals on the 18th.

.. but i’m West Indian & most other West Indians in Britain listen to ALL Caribbean music, so how comes on Dominican websites i never actually see them talking about reggae, dancehall/bashment, soca, etc? And why is it most of the times Dominican websites only have bouyon? Don’t they listen to reggae, dancehall etc?

yea we do listen to other types of caribbean music, but please excuse us, this is our season, calypso season, carnival season. So dont expect to hear anything besides bouyon and calypso and a bit of soca. This time around we only do local. We focus on our own culture. We dont hear jamaica and trinidad jamming to our bouyon and our calypso during their festive season. Please be informed. But thanks for ur concern
Dancehall etc is promoted everyday on the local radio stations and public events. (Sometimes too much during carnival) Almost every month a dancehall/reggae artist is invited for a show in Dominica. I think it’s because our local music needs more visibility and promotion, so the sites push DA music. There are some Dominican sites like http://www.numusiczone.com/ which promotes all Caribbean music.
You will agree that Dancehall/reggae etc are much better known globally,so you may see more of DA music, but trust me you will not see soca/bouyon/calypso on most Jamaican websites either. That’s just a reality.

I know that there is always controversy with the judging and results of the shows but I can’t recall all this problems with Calypso. First, Checko getting lawyer paper demanding he remove a line from his song (absolute rubbish) now Comforter want to file an injunction to stop the show (more rubbish). What is going on? Calypso is one of the hallmarks of our carnival and our culture. Now, we are trying to use the courts to do it a great injustice. This is a sad day for our sweet calypso music.

I don’t believer that there will be sufficient, compelling evidence that will warrant the stoppage of the 2012 calypso finals. I, for one, can’t wait to get down to Dominica to enjoy the show. However, I listened to the show and I find it overwhelming that the Comforter did not make through to the finals. I am an avid listener of the shows and also a calypso song writer. Maybe there is something that I’m missing. Its my opinion there is definitely some controversy involved in this matter. But the show must go on.
While you listened to the show, the judges were there to both listen and watch the performances. Being able to sing a good song is not all, you have to perform that song as well, so in the end the judges decision is FINAL!!
