Seven time calypso monarch of Dominica, Dennison “King Dice” Joseph, has said that he may be considering taking a break from the competition “if the people call for it.”
Dice spoke to reporters after copping a phenomenal seventh title with his unique style and popular numbers “It’s time for change” and “Selling the Caribbean”, at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium on Saturday night.
“This year a lot of people had that feeling that you had it enough and that kind of thing, and you know when you feeling the people you can see if they want something else,” he said, “You never know I might take a pause after this one and come back again just for the excitement of it,” he stated.
However, if the decision is left to his many thousands of fans, Dice is unlikely to go anywhere, as he points out that if the general public wants more of him, he will give them more.
When asked about his preparation, he described it as, “mystical, and not tough.”
“And I think the competition was tough this year there were a lot of good songs this year,” and when asked if the cards had not gone in his favor he simply replied, “I would come back next year.”
In an interview with DNO, first runner up, Daryl “Bobb” Bobb who has been in calypso since 2001 with a two year break in between said it was an honour to be first runner up.
“I think I could have grabbed the title but I ran a little slow in the first round. So I am very much satisfied with the judge’s decision with me coming in first runner up instead of King, because it would have been a very popular decision with the people. But with the amount of work I have put into this thing, it is really an honour coming in at first runner up.
It is his second time coming in at first runner up.
He said he tried a strategy that just did not work, “so knowing my flaw puts me in a better position to run again.”

Dicey, you are good at what you do. You are a young guy and can take a break to further your education or to travel or whatever but it’s purely up to you. Or, all the other calypsonians can let Pat write for them and we’ll still see who the best singer/performer is. Michael Jordan would never leave Chicago Bulls because his team winning to often, Bruno Mars would never stop singing because he winning too many Grammys. What kind of mentality is that where people want you to quit because you are too good. Dice, you can only get better. I love it, DA love it. Keep the pressure on. The crown don’t come easy, you have to work for it.

Congratulations to the Dice. I’m a Karessah fan myself but I love to see the Dice perform. He has great talent and I think he should keep entertaining the people. He can really perform, despite what some say about him getting the best songs. Yes he gets good songs but without his tremendous talent to perform and deliver, he could not win. I have seen calypsonians take good songs and make a mess of them. That said though, what the Dice needs to take a break for is to examine his social behaviour. You cannot be a King eight times, getting older and continue to be so irresponsible in your behaviour and lifestyle. You need to take some time to examine your ways and see what example and role model you are being to the many young ones looking at you. Spend more time reflecting, reading and praying. It would be so refreshing to see positive behavioral changes in such a talented King Dice.

How does he feel winning seven times and more? In all fairness, he could take a break and give some others an opportunity. Of course, it depends on him. Or the Committee could put a ceiling on how many times a calypsonian who consistently comes out first could participate in the competition. They could suggest that he take a break. From what he stated, it looks like he would not mind doing so. He could appear as a guest.
Note the reigning Miss Dominica and Princess only compete once as a contestant in the same show. They won and they are not allowed to compete in future.
The same should apply for calypsonians, at least after competing and winning the crown a few times.
Stick to your old testament and you will learn that you must use you talents to the maximum remember the parabel of the talents.
Calypson is different. You cannot put a stipulation on someone winning calypso crown. If the others want to defeat Dice, they have to come good. I think that only elevates the standard of the show. People have to work hard, come with good material and deliver on the night of the show to win. If there is no competition then the show will fall flat. Let Dice sign and entertain his people.

I’s is only the queens and the sports men that are recognised. They are offered jobs, scholarships, houses, citizenships etc; all well served on a silver platter.
The calypsoinians are people too. They need to be recognised in a special way. Year after year they are there to keep the art form alive. Tourists and Dominicans a like come from far and wide, year in year out to take part in carnival and most of all the calypso events. Lots of money comes in the country,the vendors and bussiness places do well at that time. Where is the reaching out to those young calypsonians, many of them need jobs. Private sector! public sector! where are you. There are those who could be ultised in the ministry of culture. Send them on work shops and various courses. Develop them, and you will see the power of the calysonians.

It was interesting listening to Cecil Joseph show on DBS on Sunday like he does every after the calypso finals , a very balance show where he goes over the finals , interesting he had both Dice and Hunter tied as king , the callers had the same cry that injustice was done to Hunter , I’m not saying that he should have been crowned king but come on judges not even first place ??
I will continue to stress that politics and Favouritism is plaguing the Calypso art form in Dominica .
I have read some of the comments on here and it’s so shameful how we cry down our very own , some of the comments stated that Hunter should not have placed , that too many songs were written about children in the past , because of the palm story last year he should never win a crown again , he is too old and should give the younger people a chance , the list of irrational reasoning is just unbelievable .
You don’t know is indeed an original song , Chuck Dust is 70 years old and continue to compete in the calypso monarch every year in Trinidad . Trinidadians continue to embrace him and his passion for the art . As for the palm story , let he without sin cast the first stone .

It would be rather disappointing if you Dice allow the people to have put your hard work and ability on hold simply because you excel at what you do! What message will that send to other mainly the youth? That they should feel guilt or bad for excelling! I am aware that it is a common characteristic in Dominica that people do not like to see their countryman succeed and maintain that success. If anything that should help you not make that rash decision is reflect on our success and songs you sang and you will find the answer that You are Calypso and Calypso is you and your contribution to the art form is of tremendous importance to the masses (even those those hatters) specially to the youth!

There is a vast difference between a cricketer and a calypsonian who consistently wins. Is it not fair for others that after winning seven times he takes a break and give the others an opportunity? What does he have to lose? Why can some of you not comprehend that?
They want to change the current PM. Why not a seven-time winner calypsonian? It is of course, time for a change. He is still young. He can always return someday, after a few years.

So is the calypso about a people’s king, and not for deserving talent? That shows that you all come to the show (especially the judges) with the mindset that Dice will be crowned again. i must say I am not a fan but the dice is a man of great talent and he should not step out the arena so that other can get a shot at the title. They should desist practicing mediocrity. Prepare all year long and defeat the king. They should do like the Australian cricket team watch the tapes of ice wining performances and study how e performs and delivers. Forget the writer because there were many great compositions in the show besides pat’s. Its the talent they need to focus on the innate delivery and artistic skill and nurture into themselves what dice has by nature. then we will see and experience a different calypso competition and it has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with he judges. with the same panel if someone were to outperform the dice they would capture the crown. I hope they start reviewing the tapes so they can see his errors and strengths and theirs as well and capitalize on being better.

While I commend Dice on his winning, it was obvious that this year’s results was unfair. How did Hunter place 4th is still beyond me.
I just can’t fathom or comprehend the decision. The crown belong to Hunter. It is so obvious when someone has it in for you. Hunter there is/are a traitor/traitors on-board examine the horns.
There is no way hunter could be the king.you did not listen to the show. Hunter was very very poor on rendition. He swallowed alot of his words in both songs. I advise you to please sit and listen to the show when it is played on marpin or purchase a cd.how strong was hunters second song lyrically, definitely not stronger than dice’s song. dice beat the man in rendition, lyrics and presentation by far.

FAs a rational thinking person, I strongly believe Dice should continue to perform. In my view, his task is unfinished. Winning crowns is a wonderful achievement, however, the greatest achievement is an individual’s positive impact on the lives of others. If the Almighty bless you with a talent, then you must use it to make a difference. It would be magical to see Dice bring the leaders of the Parties on stage together. If he decides to bow out for a while, this does not mean he should do nothing. He could compose and sing some calypsos, appear in shows and make some videos, etc., for sale. I bet throughout the year he could make some good money. He will have to decide what he plans to do in the interim.
Bobb is my King this year! All respect to Dice. He is a great performer. But he lacked a little in delivery this year in my opinion.
And this is your opinion which you have every right to. Everyone sees things differently, thinks differently as well as have different ideas. This does not mean you are wrong. Why should they give you so many thumbs down?
Why does Bobb insist on referencing the ‘people’ in the aftermath of these competitions. I believe that adds to his unpopularity.
