A peer Helpers Coordinators’ Workshop was held on Tuesday 15th November 2016 at the Public Service Union Conference Room. The workshop was organized for schools in the East, South-east, Roseau and Southern Districts. Eleven (11) primary school teachers were in attendance.
The main facilitator for the workshop was Ms. Martha Jarvis Research and Information Officer of the National Drug Abuse Prevention Unit. She focused on `Minimum Quality Standards for a Drug Abuse Prevention Programme“.
At the end of the workshop participants were able to (1) Identify the risk-based prevention approach, (2) Identify the risk-based drug abuse prevention models, (3) Identify the characteristics of prevention programmes, (4) Identify the minimum quality standards for prevention programmes and (5) Describe the basic definitions of the minimum quality components.
Ms. Jacinta Bannis thanked the teachers who continue to work with the Unit and encouraged them to train students to support their peers in achieving and sustaining a full and drug free life.
Organizer of the workshop Mrs. Crephenia James-Turney believes that the information presented at the workshop was timely and hopes that it will enhance the drug prevention programmes at the respective schools.
A similar workshop will be held for schools in the West, North and North-Eastern Districts.
So this is a Drug Abuse Prevention workshop. A workshop to prevent the abuse of drugs. I would like to know what drugs have been highlighted for abuse. Also i use drugs but not in an abusive manner i believe, so do many of my well functioning highly employed peers. I am assuming that this program is definitely not for us as we dont abuse it. This failing war on drugs is a farce. im just saying so because if walk right next to the Financial center and the Ministries, marijuana and other drugs being sold daily. a block up from police station same thing. all over we know where to find it. We grew up knowing the names for the places where it is sold. Dealers names become name brands in the communities. So this Unit, is ineffective so are the police. just my take on the whole “War on Drugs” charade.
I love the effort! Please encourage prayer for the youth, with the youth and by the youth. The word of God is the most powerful tool along with the holy spirit and the angels.
Drugs are demonic entities…. they create addictions because they are strong holds on the prayer-less.
Please listen… i know what i am saying!
ok Anal-y Thomas. You sound like another sheep. People like you have no idea that everytime you go to the doctor they may be putting marijuana, opium, cocaine and god knows what else without your knowledge. anytime your dentist injects your mouth they use cocaine to do it. go online and look up the multitude of drugs used daily by your “trusted medical board” that are made from heroine, opium, marijuana, cocaine, etc. , not to mention the synthetic drugs they sell at pharmacies. Like alcohol, drugs affect different people differently. This nonsense about demonic entities is the real hog wash we need to get away from. If you really wan to teach about drugs, teaching fear and scare tactics like how your elders who themselves knew nothing except what they were told about drugs is absolute rubbish. Research the use of drugs in religious practices and spirituality Anal-y. Stop preaching fear and ignorance.
The use of drugs even medically prescribed drugs to relieve pain can create an addiction.
The use of a drug for recreational purposes can lead to the use of a more powerful – more harmful – drug.
This can result in an overdose causing death.
It can create an addiction.
It can be a bad example to young people who may begin experimenting with drugs.
Buying these drugs creates revenue that drives an illicit and harmful trade. The same people who sell you the drugs are often found to sell guns and ammo. It is not unusual for them to have criminal connections and be involved in other illegal activities.
People who go on a binge of serial crimes of violence, stealing, rape, and murder are often found to be “high” on marijuana. When it is said the police should be concentrating on arresting those who commit these more serious crimes I want to inform them that these more “serious” criminals are often on drugs including marijuana.
Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill.
