DPSU facilitates exhibition to encourage entreneurship

Section of the exhibition

Today is the last day of a three-day exhibit facilitated by the Dominica Public Service Union (DPSU) aimed at showcasing some of the locally made items and products with a view to encourage entrepreneurship among local producers.

Arundell Thomas of the DPSU indicated that the Union has sought to expand its reach and allow for the participants of the exhibition to do the same as they try to market their products.

Thomas stated, “We’ve had this exhibition, principally for two purposes, to give people who have the ability to do local craft, herbs etc, to give them an opportunity to expose their talents and skills to the general public. And secondly, we also want to encourage them to go into entrepreneurship to make some money. So, we would like them to market those things.”

He continued, “This is organized as part of the Union’s mission outside industrial relations, strikes and clamoring for better work conditions, increases in pay and so forth. The Union in 2011 has to do something different as an outreach to the community, because its organized not just for members of the Union, but to the general public.”

The exhibition began on Tuesday and culminates today, with the only criterion being that the products be locally made and some of the exhibitors have suggested that the exercise be repeated.

“The participants have expressed so much satisfaction with the idea, the concept, that they have asked, ‘can we have it another day?’ They want it to be done on a day when a cruise ship is in port, so that they can show off their products to an even wider audience,” Thomas said.

He ended, “I think, for the first time, I am satisfied with the response.”

Excellent idea, good effort and the location is right, next to the gardens. It’s quite a while i’m hoping to see some manmade enhancement incorporated with our natural products here.I see these things being done in other countries. All that being said,i hope when the PSU takes action against the government, some of will not react negatively towards them and think that they are negative. We can see the good works they’ve done.

we won’t do well in the entrepreneurship realm because we don’t embrace nor do we understand fully the importance of technology and scientific application in this industry.

Let’s try some optimism, positivity, and encouragement….A word to the wise is sufficient….

      All the best to you…..

ithink this is a good idea to try and have this exhibition once a month when there is a tourist ship in port and see if you can get tourist to pass by as a walking tour.If you promote this properly and run it as a means for membership to have an added source of income, that would benefit thoes with determination. Ignor haters like anonymous, they doe want to see people progress, so they can blame the government. Is jealous they jealous. iam sure some people can make a change through this.GOOD JOB.

Well that’s my mother in the picture and for your information, Miss Anonymous, My mother does understand how technology plays a role in marketing her merchandise. Not only is she on etsy.com she has marketed herself on FB and HER Children have liaise with her to help market her products online.
In the forseable future she will use technology in other ways to manufacture her products. As soon as we find that cheap warehouse in China to manufacture the blueprints of her design, we’ll let you know. Meanwhile, her children who all have gone to college are fully capable of assisting her in this venture from the technological aspect to utilizing appropriate marketing tools and methods. Don’t belittle the people of your country. Everyone is going to college and are on the worldwide web and are in full contact to technology regardless of where they are from. THE PEOPLE JUST NEED THE FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE. Now, your question should have been “WHERE CAN I BUY THESE PRODUCTS?”
