Improved sidewalks for Roseau

The Roseau City Council is to spend $14,000 renovating a section of the side walk at the Canefield Bus Stop as the authorities move to uplift the image of the city.

Mayor of Roseau, Cecil Joseph, said the sidewalk, to be made from concrete slabs, will be constructed by a three-year old company called Gator Pavors.

Joseph told DNO that there is a dire need to improve the city’s sidewalks.

“A few years ago we did some sidewalks and we felt that it is of importance now as a council that we again rehabilitate the sidewalks,” he stated “They are in a dilapidated condition and we figure as a council that we need to uplift the image of the city.”

The Mayor noted that the project is being funded from house taxes collected by the Roseau City Council.

“We have always made the promise to the people that once we receive revenue from them we will take a percentage from that revenue to assist in the development of the city,” he remarked.

Despite this, Joseph said persons, living in the areas where the sidewalks are being constructed, will be asked for contribution to assist in purchasing material for the project.

He said the main reason for the project is to allow pedestrians some level of comfort and he urged citizens to assist in whatever way they can.

Deputy Chairman of the Roseau City Council, Albert Darymple, said the Canefield bus stop sidewalk improvement is the first phase of a city-wide project.

“We want to kind of enhance the area ….we are going to slab the side of the road so it would be more pleasant … that is the pioneer project … we are going to start here first,” he said.

The project is expected to begin in the next three weeks.

Really ? is this really big news? EC$14,000 only to reapir just a section of the canefield bus stop? is that the only sidewalk that needs reapir? disabled people are forced to walk in the streets cus the sidewalks are so uneven and dangerous for them…and all u find to fix a a section of the canefield bus stop? All the VAT and import duty and taxes being collected…Roseau city council itself cannot come up with ideas to earn revenue? before we used to have fairs n blockorama’s…steady..now..i guess we have our hands out agn.. either way….all sidewalks need to be fixed in roseau n tickets given to anyone found parking on them.

I don’t think we can start ticketing for parking on sidewalks as long as bus stops and car rental companies take up 90% of the parking in Roseau. As for cruise ship day!

Where that useless stadium is, is where the bus depot and paid multi-level parking could have been built. Those 2 projects would have broght instant nonstop returns to the country.

Anyway too late for that so at leat 3 areas in th einnediate outskirts of commmerical Roseau need to be designated for parking and the bus depot.

Have official designated parking spots, with parking metres, in Roseau itself. Once those are taken up you park in the paid parking lots outside Roseau. You know, like in the civilized countries.

Paid parking and ticketing will provide the revenue necessary to build and maintain a first class sidewalk infrastructure for the city. This way we dont have to be the beggars begging for a $ to do something we can do ourselves.

On another note, are bus drivers taxed? Do they get duty-free vehicles?

This is a good start. The Roseau sidewalks are in dire need of repair for some years. When complete nationals including visitors, will welcome the change. No more jumping over open culverts with running water and smelly ones we hope. In so doing people could break an ankle or leg.

The people of Roseau Central and Roseau North will not be fooled by Cecil’s sudden interest in Roseau and Goodwill It is my understanding that Cecil is now trying to get into the sportlight in the eventuality Tim Tim is unavailable to represent the contituency of Roseau North. As a matter of fact,it is alleged, high level meetings were considering the fate of Tim Tim before his illness.

Cecil you obviously do not know much about figures.I guess the job that you are going to undertake with #$14 000.00 in 2013 in this Dominica of ours,is just to block A SMALL POTHOLE around the Canefield bus stop, because to have that making DNO news indicates to me that you have not been performing at all as a mayor, so you are reminding us that you are there. The poor man needs attention.
Well brother Cecil, you are as useless a leader, as Skerrit is as a Prime Minister. Square Pegs In Round Holes. Recipe for poverty! Recipe for destruction of a country.

DOMINICA PM, Ministers, and The Mayor are putting the cart before the horse. Too much waste in Dominica in the wrong hands. To me those people in power only care for themselves and their friends. Even the President of the USA have taken a pay cut to help the economy. I the people in government really want to help Dominica, they should have a pay cut, and donate one of their homes for charity.

Too much greed and selfishness in Dominica, that’s why the country is going backward. The bible said it is more blessed to give than to receive. And to whom much is given, much is required. Do unto others, as u would like them do unto u, and love thy neighbors, and thyself.
Its seems like the blind is leading the blind, and all of them and us will fall in the ditch.

Great move, any thing to improve the city is a welcome thing, please we need some traffic lights in and around the city, if we want it that bad it will happen, start by instaling parking meters in the city that will go a long way towards the funding of such project.

    • Malgraysa
      May 10, 2013

Parking meters? Once I was innocent like you till I was told the paros and other vole would love that. I was shown the bolts that disappeared from the wooden benches on the bayfront, which eventually had to be welded down. Parking meters? Boy, you would see them decapitatated next morning and all money gone. That, or they would be jammed.Good idea but not a good idea till we rid th town of vagrants and have regular patrols.

      • "O" STRESS"
        May 11, 2013

I hate to do that, but I must say where there`s no vision/ or tunnel vision we the people will continue to perish. Utter rubish to say just because we have a vagrancy problem, we should stop and do nothing for the betterment of our country. It`s like do not grow grass cause the Cows will eat the grass. You `re not serious. We are a country of rules and regulations, laws are in place to keep society in a balance, and that goes for the vagrants you talking about. Did have to say we should installed security cameras at stratigic locations in the city? It would take too much time and D.n.o. has better things to take care than to read long postings, therefore think outside the box, cause i have better things to do than teach such elementary stuff.

Good job, mr mayor, keep up the good work.

  16. May 10, 2013

Joseph told DNO that there is a dire need to improve the city’s sidewalks–News Article

I am glad to read that the Mayor is speaking about sidewalks in the City, and not just the sidewalk at Canefield’s bus top.

After walking the sidewalks of the City of Toronto for 39 years I am convinced that we have no sidewalks in Roseau–and yet it is the Capital City of Dominica.

In this time and age people need a shopping cart to carry their shopping items–especially groceries, which is extremely heavy.

There is no place to roll or pull that shopping cart from one venue to the other, in Roseau–carrying my shopping, from the places I shopped to the bus which I needed, was the only pain I had when I visited Dominica in 2008.

One of the greatest problem, was that the sidewalks were plagued with vendors, sitting clumsily behind whatever it is that they are selling–we need to keep all of those vendors in a designated area for them only–if not Roseau will continue with that eyesore of her face; that is not attracted to a tourist at all.

I pray that this situation will be greatly improved by the time I am in Dominica again,

As far as I can see the whole of Roseau’s Sidewalks are in a dilapidated condition. We need to cover the open gutters to make it easier for pedestrians walking around our Town. As a Dominican living abroad, I would kindly Donate to that cause If there is a Company in Dominica who can carry out the work. Why don’t we open a Roseau rehabilitation fund where the Diaspora can contribute. My dream is to see Roseau looking like a clean modern Town.

Mr Joseph leave the side walk still. Loan the ministry of health the $14 000.00 so that they can repair the C T SCAN machine at the PMH in this poor and bankrupt country. Our affairs on island are absolutely and totally mismanaged by this failed regime, a failed cabinet of pots and pans.
By doing so Sir, you will be doing a humanitarian gesture to thousands of poor people on island, who naturally cannot be flown to Martinique for treatment since they are (MAL A WAY)but will instead be destined to REST GENTLY for ever and ever !AMEN!
    THANK YOU SIR!
Dominica reminds me of some of the poor African countries you know. Health care is in tatters, but a lazy and useless regime could spend $30 000 000.00 and an unimportant and useless (at this time) structure.

Sidewalks are not for enhancement primarily, but for safety of pedestrians. The Mayor seems to be concentrating on ‘enhancement’ and ‘beautification’. His focus is off target. Allow someone to fall on this death trap and you will soon get a wake up call.
