One barrel free of custom import duty this Christmas

Each Dominican household will be allowed to collect a barrel free of custom import duty and service charge this Christmas.

Government has agreed to make tail gate charges lower from December 13 2011 to January 12 2012, Minister for Ports Rayburn Blackmoore has disclosed.

He said people will only be required to pay just $10 for port charges, as government acknowledges that barrel shipping to Dominica is regular during this time of year.

“Each household will be given the opportunity to bring one barrel, box, crate or a carton of equivalent size to a regular barrel,” Blackmoore revealed.

The initiative applies only for people receiving barrels for personal consumption and not for commercial use.

“Normally somebody receiving a regular barrel, a crate or a box or a drum, would have paid Dominica Air and Sea Port Authority $26 to $27,” Blackmoore noted.

With millions going into offshore banks through passport sales and diplomatic status rent, the citizenry get a little crumb from the table and expect me to sing horay. A free barrel is still nothing compare to the $90,000 dollar duty free vehicle that privileged people enjoy; 2 million U.S dollar sale of passports; garbage bin deals, Villa ownership, land ownership; swiss and cayman bank accounts. The vagaries of a corrupt system – a free barrel at Xmas and the next level train is on its way to glory land -life is a dream.

DNO, most of the comments here are correct. We hardly believe Import Duty, Environmental levy, customs service charge and VAT will be levied.
Could you simply double check, including with customs management, and come back with a clear statement ?

I totally agree that custom duties are too high and some of these custom workers sure believe that the profits will go into their pockets when they try to squeeze a poor man’s pocket.I understand that we all have jobs to do however they show no form of empathy to assist /no form of customer service/ Let’s not even begin to talk about the shed at the back of coast guard in fond cole….these officers need to be re-evaluated!!!! might i add thank you blackmore!!!

I sent my comments 3 hours ago stating that I had called customs and was advised that there is no exemption on import duty and/or service charge or barrels. I cautioned readers to verify with Customs 1st to avoid disappointment. The comment was waiting approval for hours while all others were posted. Now it has been deleted. Why would DNO refuse to post such a comment?

    MR.BLACKMOOORE ,
THE DECISION YOU HAVE TAKEN IS NOT A BAD ONE, BUT TODAY IS THE 14TH OF DECEMBER ,IT IS 12.57 IN ENGLAND .THE MAJORITY OF MY FAMILY LIVE IN DOMINICA AND THERE ARE MORE DOMINICANS IN THE SAME SITUATION HERE ALSO.WE HAVE A VERY COLD AND STORMY WEATHER HERE AT THIS MOMENT EVEN WITH THE LOST OF HOUSES ETC.
DO’NT YOU THINK THAT IT WOULD BE MUCH MORE BETTER AND ADVANTAGEOUS FOR ALL DOMINICANS OVERSEAS TO GET SUCH AN INFORMATION MUCH MORE EARLIER BECAUSE CHRISTMAS IS NOT IN JANUARY.
DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW SOMEONE FEELS TO HEAR FROM THERE FAMILY’S MOUTH THAT THEY WANT THIS OR THAT ,BUT IS UNABLE TO PAY CUSTOMS TO CLEAR THE GOODS?
I ORDER THINGS VERY OFTEN BECAUSE I AM A SALES PERSON HERE IN ENGLAND I DO NOT PAY FOR ANY THING BECAUSE TO BE CLEAR AND NO ONE ELSE DOES EITHER.WHEN I TALK ABOUT THIS TO PEOPLE HERE THEY STILL DO NOT BELIEVE THAT PEOPLE IN POORER COUNTRIES ARE PAYING TO CLEAR OUT PARCELS.
I CAN OFFER MUCH MORE TO MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS BUT I AM NOT GOING TO SUPPORT PEOPLE IN POLITICS TO GET A BIGGER SALARY.
YOU KNOW VERY WELL THAT THIS IS A FORM OF BRIBERY TOWARDS A POPULATION WITH VERY LITTLE TO LIVE ON.
DOMINICANS ABROAD CAN HELP THEIR FAMILIES AND FRIEND MUCH MORE ,BUT THE CUSTOM CHARGES ARE TO HIGH AND THE THINGS THAT THEY CAN’T PAY FOR ARE TAKEN HOME BY THE PORT WORKERS. DO YOU THINK MR.BLACKMOORE THAT THIS IS A GOOD OPTION.

blackmoore cannot take that decision because he is not the minister of finance, futhermore for the customs to enforce this duty free that would have to be a decision from parliament..
this is an irrational behaviour on the part of the minister. and he should give an apology to the nation for his poor judgement and lack of respect for the minister of finance..

lies, lies and more lies… wait for $10.00 dollar barrel..

NOW START BLASTING THE THUMBS DOWN… the truth will always remain the truth

    • December 14, 2011

I agree with you because to gather the goods for shipping takes months because it’s when we have the funds some of us wait for sales to purchase some of the items the family at home needs so because that is good of BLACKMOORE to give out his hand out at this time season I would have to agree that he should have announced the gesture of goodwill much earlier because barrels leaving from USA, CANADA,ENGLAND a much futher and for those countries it takes longer I mysel have sent barrels home suppose to reach there for Christmas never did reached after so the writer is correct whenever you a going to make those type of announcements make them way in advance think of the amount of funds it will generate for the ISLAND.
Any way thank you Mr.Blacbmoor for your christmas gift to us in the Diaspora.
