Portsmouth shoreline wreck removal progressing smoothly

Ongoing wreck removal

Officials behind the ongoing project in the town of Portsmouth to remove several wrecks of ships which ran aground over the course of decades, say it is on course and is expected to finish in the next three to four months.

The operations manager on the project, speaking with Dominica News Online, informed us that there are only two ships left to be removed.

Parliamentary representative for the Portsmouth constituency, Ian Douglas, also expressed satisfaction with the pace of the project.

“The removal of the wrecks is going very well; the Venezuelans are moving with good speed, we are happy about the progress being made” said Douglas.

“Like we said at the inauguration of the St.John’s Fisheries Co-operative, this is just another step in the future development in the town of Portsmouth,” Douglas declared.

The removal of the wrecks on the Portsmouth coastline is being undertaken by a Venezuelan company with extensive experience in such projects.

Why aren’t we sinking them in Prince Rupert Bay and creating artificial reefs and diveable shipwrecks. Seems like a massive missed opportunity not to do this – shipwreck diving would be great for the north.

Uttered the same thoughts lower down. I totally agree with you. Even more importantly, they are developing a hotel at the Cabrits. It would make perfect sense.

Ian Douglas has certainly delivered fine results this time!!

I can imagine the amount of sleepless nights Ian Douglas had to go through to negotiate such an excellent deal for the town of Portsmouth.

If only the people of Portsmouth would appreciate the amount of effort Ian has put into this project!

But I thought when they first mentioned the clean up the parl rep was defending their presence. Sometimes we just have to listen to what our citizens are saying, without getting offended. Nice job!

I hope the wreck will be moved and deposite further out in the sea , and become a fish haven, thats how they do it in the states fish are attractive to ship wrecks they find it as a home , so i hope they have the insigth to move the wreck further out in the ocaen to attract fish in the area.

I am so happy, it’s about time. I saw a page on the internet made by a regular visitor to Ross and it is documenting how long it’s going to take to clean up the shoreline especially the Indian river area. Every time she takes pictures and writes not too flattering comments.
So if you reading this, your next visit is scheduled in two (2) months, expecting new pictures, with new comments.

They should use these wrecks to enhance or develop a dive location.

Hi, We do not have any demolition company in Dominica that can do this job. The abandoned boats were not even in a hundred feet of water and some are on shore. They boats were an eye sore and am glad they are being removed but this is a job we should be able to do ourselves.
