“Our youth have made, are making and will continue to make significant contribution to the development of Dominica.”

According to her, the contribution of young people in the development of the nation and the world cannot be trivialized.

“Our young people continue to perform and excel in an environment that sometimes creates some level of distraction, but they are proving their ability to remain focused, to keep their eyes on the prize and to work towards achieving it,” she said. “I commend you for that level of discipline.”

She urged the young people to continue to exercise discipline in order that the negative forces around them will have no effect on their psyche and morals or daunt their spirit, or discredit their effort.

“This evening you are recognized as a result of that level of discipline and success,” she stated. “To all our young people, after being identified as outstanding performers in various areas, it behooves you to be advocates and to provide support to all efforts geared at youth main streaming.”

Additionally she noted, “You will be expected to provide leadership to your fellow young people in all aspects of their development…We must be all positive role models and lead by example.”

She said the recognition ceremony should serve as an impetus for the youth to work towards greater achievement and serve to motivate youth in their organization, social clubs, schools, workplace.

She congratulated all the awardees and reminded them that this should be seen as a way of fueling, enthusiasm and encouraging you to work towards better things.

Charles commended the NYCD and the Youth Development Division for their effort at youth empowerment and recognition.

At the ceremony a total of 18 young people from across the island were awarded for their contribution to national development.
