Chief Education Officer, Melena Fontaine has said concerns faced by teachers at the Isaiah Thomas Secondary School (ITSS) have been addressed.
On Wednesday morning, the majority of teachers at the school refused to teach in which sources say was to highlight a lack of teaching supplies at the institution.
In a statement, Fontaine said the teachers met briefly on Wednesday morning “to discuss some concerns they had about school supplies.”
“Immediately after that brief meeting, they returned to their classrooms and school was back to normal for the rest of the day and since then the ministry has addressed their concerns,” she stated.
But sources told DNO that the action by the teachers was more than just a ‘brief meeting.’
DNO was told that basic supplies, such as chalk and other items, were not available at the school.
The sources also stated that a bus with supplies arrived at the school on Wednesday afternoon.
The bus was accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Education.
You got to be kidding me.alas my dear st joseph school. Boy things really change.could u imagine..no chalk. Is that a joke?
The PS of the Ministry of Education and the principal must make it right and stop make ITSS TEACHERS stress out their self for materials to teach.
What a Shame!
shame on the schools administration, for not taking note on their suppliers and making the proper arangments before hand
When I first read the article of the protest I thought the ministry had no supplies I find it strange that the school did not know that the supplies would be arriving soon. Unless someone knew that the supplies would arrive the same day and purposely trying to make the Ministry look bad for whatever reason, my take political decided that the teachers did what they did and disregarding the students and their jobs.
This makes me even more suspicious of the motives of the protest action. What about communication? No one from the school before the protest spoke with the Ministry as to when they could expect the school supplies to arrive?
Did anyone asked, if in fact there were no supplies left from last year to enable them to teach for a week, that someone picked up a small amount from the Ministry for the day until the truckload arrived instead of deciding not to teach the children.
Teachers knew the day before they had no supplies for the next day!! SMH
Here we go again, seating in Canada and blabbering your jaws.
I know of several schools in Dominica right now where supplies are severely lacking. I know it because my son attends one of them.
But no one wants to say a word, either they are afraid of victimization or the teachers are all poto labour and prefer to suffer silently.
This is not the first time this problem has surfaced at ITSS, it’s just that the teachers believe enough was enough. Wish more teachers on the island would follow their example.
If you believe all schools in other parts of the Caribbean and First World Countries get everything they need or that all schools are ready for the first day or even the first month of a new school year or term, you are not living in the real world.
Problems don’t only happen in Dominica. Have you been watching the news lately? We in Dominica are more fortunate that many other countries and it is a shame most of us have no idea how very fortunate we are and give Thanks and Praise more often.
@ A Doubting Thomas in Solidarity, you make wild and unsubstantiated assumptions. There is a saying that only asses assume. You assume that the teachers are irresponsible, lack education, and are politically motivated.I am sure that the teachers would have reach out to the relevant authorities seeking supplies before taking protest action.I’m glad that the teachers place great priority in seeing that the children learn that’s why they did what they did.For this I highly commended them
Mr Doubting, other than raising doubt in the public`s mind I am suspicious of your motives and wild allegations or assumptions. I do not believe that teachers, mainly in a strong labour seat, would take protest actions without taking everything into consideration, meaning the students, the parents and the villagers of St. Joseph.
Everything is gong wrong in Dominica under this corrupt labour party government
Chief education officer it is better to be proactiv than reactive. We too like to wait last min before we work on things. School just open and teachers already protesting about supplies. Atleast every 4 months or so (depending on how much supplies you give out) it should have a designated team either going to or calling the schools to see their inventory on hand and what they need so it can be replenished!
why it can not be the other way around???? no it will not suit your political purpose…I would love to see you all government in power and in these positions, to hear you all,,,for me personally,,,dominica just need to get blown of the friggin map,we have to much holes in square peg heads…that all of a sudden think they are the brightest people in the world.
lady, in any modern society you would have been fired..first off, the education system in dominica is nothing to boast about, but we make do with what we have.people hope for the best and send their kids to school believing for a brighter future.your job that you where hired to do is to make sure that the teachers have the neccessary equipment to teach these kids..you had an entire summer to prepare and make sure that things were in order in anticipation for the new school year..you failed to do so …….this is totally unacceptable and anywhere else but DOMINICA, you would have been fired or asked to resign immediately!!!

It take a protest to address the concerns of a noble profession. An apology is in order
