Two Dominican students, who represented Dominica during a recently held cooking competition in Barbados, are encouraging more students to get involved in Culinary Arts.
Zawadi Warner and Mitra Morancie copped a bronze medal in the 2013 Caribbean Junior Dueling Championship.
This is the first time that Dominica has received a medal since the island began participating in 2011.
Warner explained that there were two rounds in the competition. During the first round dubbed “Nation Dish” competitors were asked to cook any dish of their choice and the second round was a signature round dish where they had to incorporate two secret ingredients into the meal that they were preparing.
“There were seven teams in all and three medals were given out; gold, silver and bronze and we were awarded the bronze medal. We also got the prize for best use of indigenous dish. We made sancoche with titiwi, boiled breadfruit, fig and avocado and salad,” she said.
The competition is held for students from the ages of 13 to 20. Warner told Dominica News Online that she will be travelling to Barbados as a coach in next year’s competition and will be the liason between Barbados and Dominica for preparation for the 2014 competition.
“I will be going to the schools to find students who are interested in the competition, because as it is now, culinary arts is not popular amongst our students and Dominica does not really recognize culinary arts,” Warner remarked. “Therefore looking forward to the future we hope to recruit more students to get involved in this competition and to make Dominicans and other islands more aware of our different dishes and styles.”
Warner remarked that it is her hope that Dominica can also be seen as not only an eco tourism destination, but also as a culinary arts island.
St Lucia was the overall winner of the competition. Barbados was also awarded a gold medal. St Croix and Guyana were awarded silver medals while Dominica and St Vincent walked away with bronze medals.

Real positive vibes. Ordinary people doing extra ordinary things. Big up ladies well done.
congrats!!
Well done and excellent choice of dish. They made
sancoche with titiwi, boiled breadfruit, fig and avocado and salad. And we still nah understand why titiwi not a high voters’ choice for national dish. Actually Callaloo got 1,106 votes (36 percent) but when you combine titiwi with sancoche -Titiwi – 401 votes (12 percent)+ Sancoche –684 votes (22 percent)we got a strong contender for that top spot!!! just an observation
Well Done ladies, so happy to see Dominica compete in a regional culinary competition. Hope I may have the privilege of meeting two great chefs in the making. Continue cooking up a storm and representing the Nature Isle!
We made sancoche with titiwi, boiled breadfruit, fig and avocado and salad,” she said.
