The Dominican and Malaysian delegation after the MOU signing

Dominica has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Malaysian-based Limkokwing University to establish an international campus of the university on the island.

An article on the university’s website said the MOU was signed by a delegation headed by Emmanuel Nanthan with Dato’ Gail Phung, Limkokwing University’s Senior Vice President of Corporate Development.

The MOU was signed on October 16.

The article said Dato’ Gail Phung has announced that the Founder/President of Limkokwing University, Tan Sri Paduka Lim Kok Wing, has offered his services to help the Dominica in the development of it creative education programme.

Nanthan said the offer was tremendous and thanked Tan Sri Lim Kok Wing for his generous offer.

“His experience and skill are not just demonstrated in Malaysia, South East Asia and Africa. And to have him in Dominica and in the Caribbean, we feel honoured and privileged. To have such an expert guy working with us and working with the Caribbean, the Caribbean future is better,” Nanthan was quoted as saying.

The article said both Dominica and the university , “aspire to create a new kind of campus which will be a unique and cutting edge University campus specialising in travel, tourism and hospitality management and other disciplines that will contribute greatly to the ongoing social and economic transformation of Dominica.”

“With the establishment of the new campus, students from Limkokwing University’s global ecosystem will also have the opportunity be able to pursue a part of their studies in Dominica through the Limkokwing Global Campus initiative,” the article said. “The establishment of this new campus is in line with Limkokwing University’s commitment to globalising education, which will see it setting-up a campus in the Americas after already having a presence in Asia, Europe and Africa.”

Nanthan said the work of the university in different parts of the world has been tremendous.

“Your school has done tremendous work in Asia and Africa and we believe that the frontier of The Caribbean and Latin America and North America is a tremendous potential for the good work done by this great institution”, he was quoted as saying. “We consider ourselves now to be fully on board the movement to change the world.

Limkokwing University, known formally as Limkokwing University of Creative Technology, is a private university with campuses in some 13 countries around the world.

The Dominican delegation included Alick Lawrence and environment minister, Dr. Kenneth Darroux.

Last week Malaysian website, The Star Online, reported the delegation met with a high ranking Malaysian official in Langkawi, an archipelago of islands on Malaysia’s west coast, to explore ways of replicating the area’s tourism success.

There have been no official statements from the government on both matters.

Anybody with commonsense who would believe that crap, would have to be crazy!

Where are the students coming from to facilitate a full time four year  University in Dominica?

The population of Dominica is too small to sustain a full time University, they would have to recruit students from overseas: Ross University School of Medicine was successful in Dominica for obvious reasons; which I shall not disclosed.

They would need some special disciplines in certain sciences that are not taught elsewhere to encourage students to Dominica to study: that is bogus, all the faces you see there are liars, setting people up to vote for Skerrit. Even if they turn the State college in Dominica into a four year university, it would fail for the lack of four…

State you academical background and compare it to mine, let see what you have!

State the disciplines in which you gratitude from a four year college, or university let’s if you are qualify to debate me.

Why don’t you shut up,and mind you business!

I am not looking for friends, I do not need any Dominican friends, I am very selective about who I associate with; and certainly I don’t think you are my type!

You are ………………….. without a name: I would not even dignify with a decent response!

I am not a Labourite but if this initiative materialises it will be a good move. I am n support of any institution of higher education establishing a base here in Dominica, particularly if they teach tourism and hospitality studies and agriculture, creative and innovative education programmes especially information management, technology, science, mathematics and any modern programmes to help young and older people educationally… congrats

My first question is why would dem fellas bypass America and go all the way to Malaysia for a school, Word of advice to Dominicans, and i am not uwp anytime u see dem fellas doing something please investigate, especially this institution and its relations with Bostwana in particular, everything skerrit doing is not what it appears to be.

    • October 21, 2014

Dominica already has relationships with American universities, such as Clemson’s long term presence at the Archbold Tropical Research & Education Centre. And that’s great, but it’s a big planet with a lot of interesting people on it, here’s no need only to look to the US for intellectual partnerships, and Limkokwing University is a perfectly good school.

What is the real purpose of that trip to Malaysia…In the last article we were toldthe reason was to learn about the brand of tourism, now we hear about signing of MOU with a university….Also, which education or tourism government officials will follow-up on these agreements. These agreements must be effected by the relevant government departments in each country.. This trip is full of suspicion for a number of reasons:
-Firstly is not normal for us to hear of such discussions in real time
    – Secondly the representatives are both close advisers of the PM
Thirdly, neither the Minister of Education nor the Minister of Tourism are present
Finally, this appears to be a passport selling mission to raise money for the elections…

    • October 20, 2014

That is exactly what is going on and Dominicans have to stop Skerrit for 15yrs and now we are getting stuff from all over something is wrong.

I hope that Nantan will consider registering as a student so he can get a degree himself… since he has never sat on a university bench I wonder how he would be able to tell what is a good university.

I will be one of the first to congratulate the government on this venture. As I have always said that it is not that difficult to simulate the Dominican economy as some have been saying.

This is small economy and just as Ross University is having a massive impact particularly in the North of the island, so too these projects can impact the economy.
While I am lauding the government for this project my heart pains. You know why? because this could have been done years ago!!

Why for 15 years we saw none of these initiatives?, why after 15 years all these projects all of a sudden
why after 15 years locals can now be employed on local projects,
why after 15 years the government just realized we have an employment issue, why is the government walking around communities asking people what they want? Did money suddenly appear from somewhere?
Some may say better late than never but the issue is – is the DLP suddenly doing all these projects because they now face a formidable opposition and they just cannot afford to lose the election?

If all of a sudden man doing press conference and now trying to do in months what he should have done in 15 years – can he be trusted?

Do we not see something wrong with that? Sir for 15 years, were you not interested in developing and governing Dominica?
    Just some Questions

” has offered his services to help the Dominica in the development of it creative education programme.”

Don’t be a taken in by that! What sort of creative educational program do you know we have in Dominica?

The University of the West Indies with campuses in Mona Jamaica, Cave Hill Barbados, and St. Augustine Trinidad is suppose to be the official educational institution serving the Former British Colonies from Jamaica, in the North to Trinidad in the South; and I think Belize in South America.

However, when last you hear a scholarship is granted to a Dominican to study at the UWI?

What this man has said is that Dominica is creating an educational system, a quality we create rather than one imitated; which I suspect will be another first in the world.  You know no it election time:  Roosevelt cannot to talk about the next level, and transforming Dominica this time around.

So, his ploy now is to get university to replace Ross: Don’t be fool it’s all nonsense!

Good stuff…I would like our government to find some investors who interested to build an international airport in Dominica.our country will never progress without an international airport, for decades this passport citizenship program in place hasn’t made any achievement for our country if our government welcome some investors who interested to build an international airport for our passport citizenship program that would be wonderful.

Once upon a time people in suits had class today their sits don’t even sit right on their battered bodies.
Welcome to classless gov’t and pirate/Buccanaire advisors on the Rep. of Waitikubli.
