Montell Phillip of the Castle Bruce Secondary School is the first place winner in the senior division of the 2015 FCCA Foundation Children’s Essay Contest.
The announcement was made by the Ministry of Tourism & Urban Renewal and Discover Dominica Authority yesterday.
This year’s theme was “How the cruise industry improved my country?” and Montell’s essay, according to the FCCA “truly exemplifies Caribbean excellence”.
Montell, 14, as winner in his age group, will be awarded a cash scholarship of US $3,000, to be presented during the opening ceremony of the 2015 FCCA Caribbean Cruise Conference, on October 6 in Cozumel, Mexico.
Montell and his chaperone are expected to be at the Conference in Mexico to receive the awards. All expenses will be covered by the FCCA.
The Castle Bruce Secondary School will also receive an award of US$3,000 from the FCCA. Montell was also the senior category winner of the 2015 Tourism Awareness Month Youth Essay Contest.
Meanwhile, Dominican Hilary Lawrence of Convent Preparatory School placed third in the junior division of the contest.
Hilary, 10, will be awarded a cash scholarship of US$1,000. FCCA will also give the school the same amount.
Eight entries from schools across the island were received and judged to determine Dominica’s two entries. Dominica last secured a first place win in the competition in 2007. However, over the past seven years Dominica secured 2nd and 3rd places in the competition.
