The Capuchin community resource center is now well equipped to provide users with greater access to the internet.
On Sunday, five computers were officially handed over to the community. These computers were sourced by Dominica’s Ambassador to the Organization of American States, Vince Henderson.
The Hon Parliamentary Representative for the Cottage Constituency, which includes Capuchin, Reginald Austrie, addressed the handing over ceremony.
He noted, “Information you can probably access in a school within a month, you can access through a computer within days, hours. So that’s a very important tool, but there is also the downside to it which is if you don’t use it properly, it could have some negative influences on you as an individual and a community.”
He recognized that even with universal access to secondary education, the limited access to the internet in his constituency posed a challenge to many students.
“So that is why we believe that [access to computers and the internet] allow you to utilize the access to secondary school or to college to your best advantage. And so I believe the children and the adults of Capuchin were being shortchanged…” he said.
The Hon Parliamentary Representative is pleased with the access to the World Wide Web that students in the community now have. He sees how this access can make life easier for parents and students.
“Students, in particular from Capuchin, no longer have to go to Portsmouth to get their homework done. We have computers, we have printer, we have a scanner, we have a photocopier…those of your children who have to do SBA’s…they can now do that right here. To me, that is one of the biggest advantages for the children. They can come here, they can do their homework, they can do their research in a classroom-like setting and I believe if we can make proper use of this facility, give us a couple months and we will begin to see the beauty of having that facility,” he told the community.
Hon Austrie highlighted that this step is just one in government’s thrust to create access to education.
He reminded villagers of Government’s policy to make education accessible to every single Dominican from preschool to tertiary level. This also includes full Government support with books, uniforms and transportation.
He thanked the Government of Dominica for playing a significant part in the refurbishment of the Learning Center.
Shame on you Reggie
