Junior Achievement Dominica on Wednesday officially launched its 2015 “Economics for Success” program for high schools on island.

Among the participating schools are the Dominica Grammar School, Wesley High School, Portsmouth Secondary, St Martin Secondary, Pierre Charles Secondary, North East Comprehensive and Goodwill Secondary among others.

JA Economics for Success is a career focused program which explores personal finance and students’ education and career options based on skills, interests, and values, while demonstrating the economic benefits of remaining in school.

Speaking at the launching ceremony held at the National Development Foundation of Dominica (NDFD) conference room, Executive Director of Junior Achievement Dominica, Natasha Yeeloy- Labad, said the program will focus on information relating to careers, budgeting, credit and the importance of insurance.

“It promises to be an opportunity to impact your students with real world information on career planning and that is one of the focuses of the Junior Achievement Programme,” she said. “And as part of this program Junior Achievement will go to the high schools and focus on what we call JA Economics for Success.”

There will be many classroom activities involved in the program.

“Among the classroom activities, children will participate in discussions, they will have the opportunity to receive direct instruction, they will be able to reflect on their future career aspirations and they will be able to make use of the Junior Achievement program kits,” she stated.

According to Yeeloy-Labad, the information provided during the program will also help students make informed financial choices throughout their lives.

“So many of our students don’t recognize the importance of the choices that they make every day and it’s happening at a very crucial time in their lives when they have the energy, shiny faces, beautiful hairstyles, they are having the best time of their lives, but they are also having to make some of the most important decisions that will impact the rest of their lives,” she explained.

Ten students from each school who excel in the program will form part of a national expo and will become an in a local organization.
