The Ministry of Education has received post-Tropical Storm Erika relief valued at about $100,000 from the Dominica-Anguilla Relief Team, JAYS Limited, and Harper Collins Publishing.
The donations were presented to Ministry officials by Owner and Manager of JAYS Ltd., John Lewis, at a ceremony on Friday.
EC$28,200 was raised by the Anguilla-based ‘Nature Islanders Club—the Dominica Relief Team’, to be distributed to schools on island by May 31st 2016. Each high school is to receive $500, while primary schools are to receive $300. This extends to private schools, and the Social Centre. The program was initiated by Hyancinth Augustine from Dominica.
JAYS Ltd donated 150 chairs towards the refurbishing of schools, while Harper Collins Publishing donated 420 books, comprising of dictionaries and CSEC workbooks for Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Integrated Science (60 of each).
Lewis noted that he felt “honoured” to contribute to the relief effort, and encouraged others to do so as well.
“I’m very pleased, I’m very honoured to be able to make this contribution, and I think that if each of us, as Dominicans, were to do our little part, then I think Dominica can be better,” he stated.
Education Minister, Petter Saint Jean, also present at the ceremony, thanked the donors and assured them that the funds and supplies will “go a long way” towards students’ education and success.
“Every little push that our students can get, matters,” he noted. “Every gesture of generosity that adds value to their educational experience, matters. And, therefore, this presentation serves as an indication to our children that you are interested in their education and that their success as individuals matters to us all.”
Several schools in Dominica were damaged during the passage of Erika on August 27.

The government are leading a begging culture, they seem to have little pride. They should be leading by example and work work work. Show the country that hard work does pay .All I read is grant, gift ,donations from friendly government from prince this and prince that. All I am really trying to say lead by example.
