For the 2014-2015 academic year, two students entering secondary school were awarded scholarships under the NBD scholarship programme. These two new awardees join the eight recipients from past years, bringing the total number of students under the programme to ten.
The five-year scholarships were awarded to Convent High School student Yannicia Thomas and Portsmouth Secondary School student Christiana Thomas; and will cover the cost of tuition, books and other supplies.
The scholars were selected based on need and in consultation with the Welfare Division the deserving students were identified and awarded.
According to the Executive Manager of Marketing at NBD, Suzanne Piper, “The NBD scholarship programme has been in place for over 15 years and was created not only to give worthy students financial support, but also to ensure that the Bank is fulfilling its mission to improve the quality of life for the citizens of Dominica. We feel that it is very important to play our part in helping to develop the youth of our country. NBD is pleased to offer these scholarships as a means of enabling the success of the students.”
Piper encouraged the students to play their part by being dedicated to their studies and obtaining good grades.
The students, who are excited about their journey for the next five years, began classes at their respective schools this week.
Could you imagine, how proud i felt for the students of dominica, when i turn to internet and i saw these two lovely and educated “little girls”.
Especially my grand daughter Yannicia Thomas has reach these stage
what did these kids obtain at the grade six exams? is any one a holder of a government scholarship or bursary?if so why should they get a scholarship from the bank for need?
Normally students who get scholarships from private institutions are not government bursars or scholars. It is usually based on need or merit- merit meaning a high pass. It would be nice to congratulate them and wish them the best instead of looking to start a useless controversy.
Lim why??? Old folks have always said if you don’t have anything to contribute to a good conversation stay out of it. This has gone well for the students and their respective families so it is obviously a good start to a journey. Stay in LIM-BO-LAND for the time being with your negative comment and allow well meaning folks to come to the table and congratulate these deserving, beautiful, and smart children.
good job! dont expect to get alot of comments cause its not controversy
Well done NBD looking after the welfare of our youth. That is the only thing that can lift one up it is education.
