A primary school challenge, targeting grade four students in 13 primary schools, has been added to the list of activities planned for the 12th edition of Financial Information Month (FIM) being held in October.

FIM is a regional financial, economic, business and entrepreneurial educational campaign executed in the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union (ECCU) since 2002 along with the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB), ECCU member governments, financial and academic institutions, utility and insurance companies, the media, other private and public sector institutions and community-based groups.

The program incorporates a series of initiatives designed to support the attainment of a financially developed and vibrant ECCU regional goal.

Speaking at the launch of FIM 2014 at the board room of the AID Bank on Tuesday, resident representative of the ECCU and the coordinator of FIM, Sherma John, said a total of “15 in-cash partners and 12 in-kind partners” has teamed up for campaign this year.

According to her, the primary school challenge is the new addition to this year’s activities.

“And one of the features, and this year something new, is the FIM primary school challenge,” John said. “This challenge is geared at grade four pupils at the primary schools. We have selected 13 primary schools in the Roseau and surrounding areas and 13 of our partners have decided to adopt a school for that period.”

John explained that one employee from each partner will go into the schools and speak to the pupils of the selected grade four classes with a ministry of education approved syllabus.

“So for four weeks we will go into the school to facilitate four sessions on money, savings, budgeting and at the end of October we will select one child to represent the school and on the 13th of November there will be the competition,” she noted.

The participants’ prizes will be in the form of deposit accounts at their partnering institutions, and it is hoped that parents will continue to maintain those accounts.

She informed that the grade four students were chosen because they were at the right age.

John noted that if all goes as planned the challenge will be expanded into the other parts of the island.

FIM 2014 will be held under the theme: Soar to Succeed.
