About the Colihaut Government School

The present Colihaut School building was constructed over a two year period, from 1963 – 1965, on land donated by Howel Shillingford then parliamentary representative for Colihaut. The building started with an enrollment of over 200 children compared to the 60 students that currently make up the entire student population. At the time of opening most staff members were from the village, including the head teacher Mr. Egbert Edwards. Class teachers were Herminie Gabriel (now deceased), Sylvia Thomas, Beverley Zamore, Janet Corriette, Lady Catherine Daniel, Althea Zamore and Dawn Bruney. Colihaut has produced one island scholar, Wendel Sebastien, in the lifetime of this building.

“This school building has provided education and entertainment activities for so many of our villagers that we could not let this important anniversary pass by unnoticed” Ezra Blondel, Director, Inspire Inc.

Very inspiring. Giving someone the chance for a brighter future. Let’s hope this encourages more persons to do more for our children as they are our future. Well done.

Good gesture! But it breaks my heart to hear that only 60 children are enrolled at the school presently. I remember the hundreds of children who attended school in my time, the quality of education I got then was of the highest standard. Even today I can out test any of the young students in a test. It is very sad to see what my little village has come to. 60 children?
