Six students from the Dominica State College (DSC) have received scholarships from the BB Trust Inc. a Francophone non-profit organization (NGO) supporting youth Education and training in French language, Tourism, hospitality, Culture, Agriculture, and Environment.

The scholarships were presented on Thursday during a ceremony held at the DSC.

Of the scholarships presented, three were towards attaining a Hospitality Degree, two towards an Environmental Health Degree and one towards a Degree in Agriculture.

The recipients of the scholarships were Anisha Cabey, Allison John-Baptiste, Ryan Lawrence, Justin Cyrille, Ronaldo Graneau, and Royette Stoute.

Present at the ceremony was the President of the Institution, Dr. Donald Peters, Head of the Bursar’s Office at the College, Chekira Lockhart, the President of the BB Trust Inc. Norris Prevost, and other members of the Board of BB Trust Inc.

Prevost told the recipients to regard the members of the company as mentors and advised them to “Be wise, smart, work diligently, and report back to us and keep communication”. The students were encouraged to help the trust to grow so in the future, there will be an increase in the number of students benefiting from the trust.

Dr. Peters pointed to the students of the high expenses in acquiring a college level education.

“In the United States, one of the wealthiest countries in the world, 85 percent of the students at university are either on financial aids or loans. In Dominica it is no different,” he stated, adding that the assistance, should be seen as a great financial ease.

He expressed his gratitude to the BB Trust Inc for the financial assistance as it helps to effectively run the day to day operations of the school.

The President of the school reminded the students that they are the future, and every dollar spent on education, is a dollar worth spending.

Treasurer of the BB Trust Inc, Mr. Felix Wilson wished the students success in their educational ventures and reminded them that the BB Trust will always be a support system to them.

Congratulations to all.. However I can see the need for.some students in this line up to get a scholarship, but for others. I think when your both parents are working you can afford to send your child to school… I think it had other students that needed that scholarship more than others. Quite disappointed in couple ppl that were chosen. Why didn’t the sponsor so background on the sponsored and see who is actually poor and struggling.. Trish cabey.. I really commend you on this.. This is all I shall say.

I recall meeting Mme Boucher in Paris and I must say that I am pleased to see that her wishes are being fulfilled. She cared very deeply about this project. To the recipients, make full use of the resources available to you through this Trust. It would be a great idea for the trustees to publicize the positive impact that Mme Boucher’s initiative has had on the ability of students to access higher education at the State College. Perhaps a booklet or paid advertisement of some sort highlighting their achievements?
