SMA launches two scholarship funds

St. Mary’s Academy (SMA) has launched two scholarship funds: the Mr Cuthert Elwin Scholarship Fund and the Anthony & Dora Scholarship Fund.

Both funds have been started with a generous donation of $4,000 by Leonard Joseph and his children.

Joseph is a graduate of SMA and a long-time sponsor of the Child Fund Dominica.

He is also the son of Anthony Frederick Joseph and Dora Joseph and describes them as “champions in social and adult education development of workers, parents and ordinary people who were not privileged to enter high school due to their family’s` low income earnings.” Frederick Joseph, he says, “was a champion, founding member and served as General Secretary of the Dominica Amalgamated Workers Union (DAWU), a Trade Unionist stalwart and a Senator in the House of Assembly. Dora Joseph, an Adult and Literacy Education champion was head of the Adult Education Department, of the Ministry of Education.”

He says late principal of St. Mary’s Academy, Cuthbert Elwin who passed away recently “will always be a memorable figure and role model to the students of SMA whom he served with passion and conviction.”

Leonard has requested former students of SMA and the general public to be part of this fund that our young boys received a secondary education, a must to their personal development, career choice and employment. This is an investment.

Anyone interested in donating to these two Scholarship Funds can contact the St. Mary`s Academy.

The scholarships will be awarded for the new academic year beginning September 2016.

They will assist needy families who strive to have a quality education for their sons.

Awardees will be selected from the incoming form two or higher.

Anyone interested in donating to these two Scholarship Funds can contact the SMA.
