Teacher and student in altercation at ITSS

A student of the Isaiah Thomas Secondary School (ITSS) has been arrested and released following an altercation with a teacher.

The incident occurred at 10:15 on Thursday morning.

According to the police the student told them he knocked the head of the teacher against a door frame because the teacher was calling him names.

The police were summoned and the student arrested.

The teacher showed no signs of visible injury and according to the police, decided not to pursue the matter.

The student was then released.

When Dominica News Online contacted the school, authorities were tight-lipped only saying there was a conflict at the school and the matter was being addressed.

On Wednesday the school held a Spiritual Intervention Day which organizers said was intended to “sensitize the staff and students of the importance of allowing God to have his rightful place.”

    I am a student of that school and how they have viewed the matter on DNO it was not a big deal in the school. yes it happened, yes the boy was took in by the police, but he was not arrested!! but only brought in for questioning. the teacher didnt even decide to press charges or anything. it was just a big misunderstanding.

    sometimes we make haste to rush to judgement.we should frown on students who are violent at school with/against anyone also we should not tolerate teachers who does not see the need to respect others.

    Having read most of these comments, i’m quite saddened that a solution to the problem has not been determined.We all are human and have our limitations ,however we as adults have to act and behave responsible in order for us to gain the respect of our young people. While I disagree that the student should not lift his hand on the teacher,I also believe,the teacher seeing the matter escalating should report to her superior and let him or her intervene in the situation. We all act like name calling infront of peers seem to be sweet where as we all do not even want people to shout at our animals farless for our kids. I do not lend support to the student, but we must put ourselves or our children in the situation.I agree that some children are badly raised and may cause disturbances at school,but common the teaching profession calls for discretion,humility,fairness and a sense of dignity to be displayed very often when these behaviours occur. As teachers are we trying to encourage learning and good citizenship or are we in it to fight and be a winner to gratify our own ego?

    I have read over and over again about these incidents in schools. one of the readers make a valid point that the teachers have to be disciplined too. I had an incident where a teachers verbally assualted my child then left the front of the class in a trya banks fashion and slapped my child. To cover her tracks she went to the principal who requested extended suspension for my child. The teacher did receive some injuries however from all reports she started the fight and was not discplined. I am not in a agreement with student disrespecting teachers but the teachers go overboard . In that case we do not have any evidence that gives a true picture of the matter.

    @DNO,

    In all these student vs teacher altercation stories we never get the view point direct from the student,parent or teacher or even student witnesses as to what really took place. This is rather sad as it leads to much emotional speculation among your readers.

    A student may be out of place to strike a teacher, however the circumstances leading to this anomally needs to documented descriptively. A teacher has a responsibility to mange a classroon but this does not guarantee them the right to ‘provoke’ students, who like the teacher are human too.

    A child beats a teacher and the next day a Spiritual Intervention Day is held, have you all ever considered those who are not of the same belief system,
    Do you believe that this will changes things at the school…..?
    What will the school do if something of a larger magnitude like a killing or a shouting takes place..
    The escalating violence in school system should be addresses with a affirmative plan of action, which by violent behavior should be graded from 1 to 5 and a proactive plan of action should be put in place to deal with every grade of violent behavior.

  13. EXCHANGE-NO ROBBERY?
    May 4, 2012

    For years we have been taught as a people that everything in life comes at a price, and that nothing is free- that is also right!

    However, we have been thought that exchange means no robbery- THAT IS A LIE FROM THE PIT OF HELL!

    In the natural world exchange is no robbery yes, but in the spiritual world oh yes some exchanges mean ROBBERY!

    What am I saying? Here goes,

    For too long we have allowed ourselves to become a people over swept with and by the consumer mentality- wanting and having the latest fad flashed over the latest 42inch flat screen tv or $2000.00 iphone 4s.

    As a result, we have placed unneccessary pressure on not only ourselves, but our leaders and governments.

    In response, even when they know it is unquestionably wrong to sell their souls and their values many Dominicans including our political figures go out of their way, out of Gods ordained way to try to attain the worlds wealth to appease our materialistic lusts.

    This has led to receipt of money and other capitalists incentives from seemingly affluent entities, countries, individuals, organisations..

    Upon receipt of these incentives and cash, what happens………………….

    AN EXCHANGE….

    Not only do our leaders receive money but the spirits associated with these moneys

    The word of the only true and living Jesus Christ says that “we wrestle, not against flesh and blood, but spiritual wickedness in high places….”

    Libya-Gaddafi, Venezuela-Chavez, Syria- Assad and the list goes on……..

    their countries are fledged with rapes (Gaddafi himself was sodomised upon his capture), robberies, murders, anarchy chaos, rampant violence and disresppect…

    By opting to receive their aid and counsel that is what we opt in for………

    Is it any wonder school children have been literally possessed with violence of late?

    Do you know how many of these children and their parents receive those same evil funds when they seek help from our leaders?

    The more we rely on the enemys wealth the more we allow our people to be controlled by the recent spate of violence, sickness and turmoil so rampant everywhere.

    As christians, please Dominicans my heart is so burdened for my people, let us not go to these evil moneys because what we are doing is giving the enemy power to intervene in our buisness- when God should step in to heal and mend and instead of sticking to the God we know we go for assistance from these worldly Gods all we do is reduce Gods influence and empower the enemy’s evil attacks.

    Let us pray for the political spiritual health and educational leaders that we can all return to Gods simple but effective plan for humanity and Dominica.

    Let us stop being so materialistically demanding and learn to be content in Gods provisioning and his ultimate sufficiency, please.

    Pray without ceasing, speak positive and virtuous words, encourage, edify, comfort and support each other.

    Start with this posting-

    please understand the place I am speaking to you from and encourage ourselves to do better- write positive and commendable responses to this post

    Lets stop giving the enemy of our souls glory..

    Oh Nature Isle let the mercy of JESUS CHRIST move you from being a nation of adversity and turmoil to one of testimonies and peace.

    AMEN.

      The opinions you express are yours which you are entitled to, yes in between has some truth regarding people are driven by material things. The rest of it is filled with religious jargon, dogma and a distorted perception as to what your believe how the spiritual operates,which is absurd and shows how little you understand the world around you as to why and how things happen.

      You need to understand the way you see things and the perception you from using your religious beliefs as the test or measurement to establish what is truth for you is not necessarily the truth at all. You made a statement, quote ‘Lets stop giving the enemy of our souls glory” one of your religious jargon.Do you know what is Man’s greatest enemy it his himself and not some outside force which is sold to you by religion.It is a man’s own mind, not his enemy or foe, that lures him to evil ways,and it is self-analysis that helps a man’s soul to become enlightened, but most of us buy the dogma from religion it is some outside force that is responsible, it is much easy to blame someone for what is happening to you than to look within your self honestly and see the problems.

      ON the problem facing Children at Schools, it is not a simple problem but very complex and encompass many things.I do not proclaim to have the answers, but one thing for sure the system we still use is out dated and has outlived it usefulness time for a change.

    We all have rights. Students and teachers alike. This is not a basketball game where fouls from opposing teams cancel each other.

    If the story is true, both student and teacher should be disciplined. If not, it sets a precedent for escalated altercations.

    @ADMIN:
    You have provided input from the police and school authorities. I understand the legalities when minors are involved.

    Is there a representative from the students’ council who could provide us with the student’s version of the story? (Without naming the student of course).

    In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

    Firstly, this is not the first time these incidents are occurring at our secondary schools. Why is it we continue to employ strategies that do not work? Why is it every time the blame game is played either at the teacher or student? Does this really address or curb the problem? Obviously the answer is no.

    Secondly, I assert that the main reason these rebellious behaviors occurs is due to the fact that the spiritual code of respect and ethics have been destroyed from the very core (moral debauchery). No respect for Allah/God, Man and Woman do not respect themselves, the institution of spirituality and family values have been seriously compromised thus we have a breakdown of our society. This is one of the main roots for the lack of respect for one another in our society today.

    Unless we address the plight of the family structure in our society seriously these issues will not be curbed. The very teacher who is accused of calling this student names and this very student accused of harming the teacher both come from some family background. Both are victims of a vicious cycle which we fail as a people to tackle and address.

    Lastly, it is hoped that this issue is resolved because if this student was released by the police for bad behavior without any tangible follow up, what message this sends to other students? Lord help our country!

    To all those people who appear to be teachers making comments here,you all should be ashamed of yourselves.I am reading these posts with utter disgust because of the way that you are abusing each other in public.

    I am even more surprised that DNO has the audacity to fuel such abuse by allowing these comments on there.
    However i must say that this is petty and has drifted away from the situation at hand.
    I can see why these students at ITSS are having so much problems.Their teachers are not better and as a parent i think Ministry of Education should really put some measures in place to monitor the teachers they employ in our schools.
    Its sad that teachers have to bring their personal issues in public when they can deal with it in private.
    I have to ask myself whether i would really want my child to be taught by those of you on there who were hurling abuse at each other.What does a teacher cheating on her husband has to do with anything in this article or a teacher without CXC’s.For the people who sent these comments do you really think that you looked cool by making such comments?You are indeed embarassing yourselves and not the people you claim to be trying to hurt with your words.

    As teachers you should respect yourselves first and then the students will respect you.
    All i have seen is utter abuse here and not one person making a sensible comment.
    By the way what does christian and non christian have to do with anything.I suggest the person who is a seven days adventist be quiet about such issues.You all claim to be christians as well so you should not be commenting on who is worse.
    Lets do better than this,This is wrong.In what way is God glorified in any of this.Shameful.

      @ Autism

      This is an attack on a teacher. It is acting violently and is a crime. No matter what, the student had no right to hit the teacher and bang her head. I do think that the student is out of place and does not know his place. He is crude, rude and lacks discipline and respect for himself as well as the teacher.
      I visualize what the teacher may have been telling him. She may have been admonishing him and probably warning him.
      We do know that there are some children/students who do not like to be spoken to and not even by their parents. This child requires discipline and training.
      Were children in general not admonished by their parents? Did they hit their parents because they spoke to them even harshly.
      I do not make excuses for those children/students specifically in light of their unruly conduct and in school. It is getting out of hand. I do think that the school authorities must do much more than they are presently doing to eradicate student misbehaviour in school which is a place of learning and ‘respect for the teachers’.
      If something is not done after those students may one day graduate and be employed in the work force, if they do something wrong, consider what they may do to their bosses and also co-workers for admonishing them. Now is the time to discipline those children. School is not a war zone. It is a place of learning and preparation for the future and as an employee. Absolutely no one should make excuses for those students.

    I know this teacher that was involved in this incident and trust me she loves bringing down children and calling them names and thinks it is funny.She has no respect for children and dissed them at any time.You have to have alot of patience and have to be one that can ignore to be in this teacher class. I am not taking sides here and i am NOT saying that the boy is right for what he did,so dont take this the wrong way but this teacher needs to learn to stop calling children names and dissing them,so conflicts like this can be avoided.

    Its seems to me the the Dominicans Schools or the Students seems to be going thru a rough time with references to discipline and respect.

    I have from time to time read several critics and articles on behavioural problems at school and I believed I may be able to offer some guidance.

    I have listed below a model for the Teachers and student offering guidance and awareness for promoting

    ~~~~~~~~Academic Engagement~~~~~~~~~~
    1.Link daily lessons to life and needs of students;
    2.Demonstrate relevancy Create expectations of success for all students.
    3.Give students specific feedback about what they did right.
    2.Teach, model, and cue problem solving, empathy, conflict resolution, impulse control, anger management.
    May 3, 2012
    no teacher or parent should at any time call their children names. This lowers the child self-esteem.By calling names, the child must have been intimidated infront of his peers,and arouse his anger, but this still does not allow a child to raise hands on the teacher, it is dead wrong. Teachers respect your children if you want to be respected by them.
      Point of correction hun! As sad as it may sound,yes there are many schools abroad where students have done worse and are still allowed in the school and even back in the same teacher’s class. What we do not want to become is that. I have had students come straight from jail (not juvi) to school. This news is disheartening because I used to pride myself on the caliber of students we produced in DA. Now we are allowing the same sort of behavior that has crippled the US’s secondary education system, to become rampant in ours. Students feeling at liberty to attack teachers. That is just the beginning. Not one person in DA can say they have gone through school without some ignorant rude teacher. What makes it different now? It is just that now students feel it is perfectly fine to attack teachers. Why didn’t we attack out teachers? We need to get to the root of this issue before it gets to the point that we need to have metal detectors at the entrances and drug-sniffing dogs every week to parade the campus. I kid you not when I tell you this is the situation here. We CANNOT afford to let that sort of thing reach our shores.
    May 3, 2012
    Students from various schools all have the same complaints that teachers are very disrespectful to students; they call the students inappropriate names, they curse them, they aggravate them and then when all is said and done, the students are the ones who get the blame and are seen as bad. But the teacher need to get their acts together and act as professionals. They must stop pushing those children buttons.
      At the end of the day no student has the right to raise their two hands or feet that God gave them and attack a teacher. This boy is rude and very much out of place. He lacks discipline and is quite uncouth. You guys don’t know what the teachers are faced with daily at that school. Even teachers are human beings and may say things out of place. He is an old enough person to know that he should have reported the said teacher. What gave him the right to hit her………
      This happens when the “Enemy” is attacked by prayer. Once there is no prayer, then he is calm because he has the children where he wants them. We need to wisen up, when we pray and incidents happen, then, PUSH harder and pray and pray pray and command him to leave yes leave in the Name of Jesus. Drive him out with prayer and kick him out with prayer, Demolish him with prayer. All inthe Name of Jesus. And then always apply the faith in Christ even what we see looks ugly. He is subtle and to want you to believe that he is strong but there is nothing too difficult for the Lord to do!
    “faith without works is dead..” (James 2:14-26)
    Holding dramatic prayer-worship sessions without backing it up with direct intervention is pure hypocrisy and a waste of time.
    Prayer is good but dominicans must also rely on the many other gifts that the Lord has blessed them with.
    Teachers must know that respect is earned. We need to lead by precept and example. No child needs to be humiliated by name calling. the ministry of education needs to act fast and transfer this teacher to another department other than school.
    • islandgirl
      May 4, 2012
      I say again, we ALL had those teachers. You went home, told your parents, and they came up to the school and dealt with the matter. Children need to stay in children’s places. It is NOT a student’s place to attack the teacher. Let another adult, parent, principal, minister, whoever, deal with the matter. Once we start accepting this type of behavior, it will be IMPOSSIBLE to break. yes IMPOSSIBLE!
      Well, you giving them fuel. In my days when you get home you receive a solid punishment for disrespecting your teacher, those were the parents we were blessed with. I am proud to be a well respected individual, my parents instilled that in me. These days will never come to pass again. Thanks Mama, you disciplined me when I crossed the line did not understand it then but I am reaping the rewards now and I have instilled it in my children, I hope they do the same with theirs. Hats off to my mother, my dad died when I was 4years old, my mother was 28, five years after they were married, she raised me single-handedly. I will forever be grateful for that. Take a que children of today.
      It pays to be respectful to everyone and it goes both ways.
Seriously, They are dumber than a sack of hammers.         Not even talk.They are too busy doing other things.
    • What?
      May 3, 2012
      How does the government come into this scenario? Violence in schools has nothing to do with government….you IDIOT! Why dont you blame the upbringing of the child? Infact, the government should have laws to address violence in schools whereby the penalty will serve as a deterrant to the students/would be offenders.
      Like MLK, I have a dream that one day my people will start taking responsibility for their actions and likewise teach their children to do the same! that’s my dream.
      People are too fiesty these days, they are quick to act and slow to listen and process and are not humble at all.
