The Adventist Development Relief Agency (ADRA) has demonstrated support to education in a big way.
On Wednesday September 30th, ADRA, in collaboration with the South Leeward Mission of Seventh Day Adventists, presented a check of $25,000 to the Dominica State College to help fund the education of 25 students.
Local ADRA Co-coordinator, Nurse Pricilla Prevost applauded the quick action of the South Leeward Mission in response to the devastation caused by Tropical Storm Erika.
She revealed that in its response, the mission placed special emphasis on education.
“After we sent the call out that we were in distress and that we had a disaster, these countries started raising funds towards the relief effort here in Dominica. They decided that a lot of people would be giving to different things: food, clothing, money etc so [the mission] wanted to assist with the education situation here in Dominica.
“They collected, within a week, $75,000 that they have sent to us in Dominica and asked ADRA to manage these funds.”
Each scholar will receive $1000. The coordinator explained, “This money is divided into three parts: $500 will go towards your tuition for the semester, $300 towards uniform and school supplies, and $200 towards transportation.”
She added that this is the first attempt since it is known that others also need support..
Scholarship recipient, Chantal Titre of Petite Savanne welcomes the assistance from ADRA.
“I was really affected by Tropical Storm Erika because my home flooded and I lost my clothes, schoolbooks and everything. So I feel thankful to receive the scholarship. I would like to thank you to the agency. I feel very good.”
Earlier this month, ADRA donated more than $30,000 towards relief and recovery following Tropical Storm Erika.
