Youth leaders take a stance against porn

Jahisiah Benoit
Jahisiah Benoit

Youth Leaders in Dominica are taking a firm stance against the recent proliferation of pornographic material on the island.

President of the National Youth Council (NYC), Jahisiah Benoit, told Dominica News Online that the spread of such material reflects a moral decline of Dominica.

“People with high morals do not spread content that is ponographic, persons with high enough moral standards would delete videos of that nature as opposed to forwarding it to their friends,” he said. “Why is it that our society has such a high desire to see those things? It’s like we are getting desensitized to the things that are happening.”

He condemns the upload and spread of such material. “I want to condemn on behalf of the NYC the act of disrespecting people’s private property and encourage people to respect people’s privacy and people’s property,” he said.

He echoed the a recent call of Co-ordinator of the HIV Unit, Julie Frampton, to encourage teaching in the school’s about safe sex and the effects of AIDS which in turn will assist them in making more concerned decisions.

Delroy Williams
Delroy Williams

Youth activist Delroy Williams, says the spread of the pornographic material leaves a lot to be desired on Dominicans as a people.

“As a society it leaves a bad taste in our mouths,” he told DNO. “I have never really seen an event being so publicly distributed in that manner.”

He added that society does not provide enough support to those who are victims in such circumstances.

“Our institutions are not capable to deal with such incidents we definitely need to place more emphasis on providing these persons with counseling and other facilities to help them recover,” he stated.

Recently there has been an upsurge pornographic material being uploaded to social media networks which include Facebook, BBM, Whatsapp amongst others from an unknown source.

A Facebook page was also created dubbed “Dominica Porn Studio” where various pictures and videos of young women engaging in sexual activity was uploaded for the world to see.

A number of people reported the page and it has since been taken down.

Many of those involved say they had no knowledge that their videos or photos were being distributed.

After having read this article I must ask: what is the real issue here? pornography OR invasion of privacy. As regards to the pornographic /sexual material which is being displayed against the will of the participants , I would refer to this as an invasion of privacy issue rathr than a pornographic issue.

The rights / privacy of the people in this case were violated. The content used against them just happend to be pornography but it could just as easily have been something else like private texts or private phone calls. So the real issue here was an invasion of privacy, not spread of pornographic material.

Everyone has their own views on certain controversial topics like pornography so to state that pornography is bad and demoralises a country is too braod of a statement. That staement is quite subjective. Personally I think that there is a time and place for most things and I see nothing wrong with pornography at the right time and place. Most of pornography is made in countries where it is legalized and sold as part of adult entertainment.

I am of the firm belief that if a person is raised in a psychologically, mentally and morally sound environment, they will be able to choose their own views on pornography and, even IF they watch it in the privacy of their own homes, they will be able to draw from it the positive rather than any negative effect.

As a society, we in Dominica must develop a strong spiritual code which will enable us to have genuine love for one another. So As such ,we will resist the urge to destroy peole’s lives in any manner: be it through spreading their private information, gossiping or sharing drugs and substances.

There are many thing which can have a negative effect on our societies. it is up to us to raise mentally and psychologically strong and positive children who will be bale to strike a fine balance between doing what is right for themselves and doing what is right for their societies as well

Dominica is not the only nation with a growing porn problem. I am in Canada and I expect it is as bad maybe worse here.

I have been following DNO for maybe four month and the articles about porn have caught my attention.

After I read this article several thoughts came to my mind. I hope you will let me share them with the reading audience.

Every country has its problems but I can tell from the comments on DNO that there are many good people in Dominica who don’t want this kind of rubbish. These decent folks are your strength: the salt of the earth and the light of the world. They can make a difference by their prayers, their example, and by teaching the younger generation the sacredness and beauty of married love, and how to avoid anything that would spoil that.

But it was especially encouraging to see these two young men, Jahisiah and Delroy, speaking up. If any change is going to be effected it has to come from people in positions of leadership and trust, people who have a sphere of influence in which to touch the lives of young men and women.

Porn is not a victimless crime. It fuels crimes against women and children. Studies have shown that it is often a factor in rape cases. It has been known to figure big in the crimes of serial rapists and serial rape murderers.

It is addictive and holds its victims like a steel trap. Social agencies need to provide counseling – not only for drug and gambling addiction – but for porn addiction. Churches that have a pastor with a deliverance ministry or one trained in counseling have much to offer. They need to discretely make the availability of their services known.

The vastness of large countries like Canada and the States make the battle against porn a greater challenge. Dominica is smaller. This can work to your advantage. But people at every level from the homes, to the schools, to the churches, to government, and to law enforcement need to get involved. And they will once they know the true results of porn and the long tern effects of this evil. Only ignorance stands in the way of an all out war against this evil.

All who can help – especially those in government and law enforcement – need to be informed of the seriousness of the problem.

Porn addiction can mushroom into a larger sex addiction. When this happens it can lead to the worse crimes of sexual aggression and violence.

Thank God the problem is being recognized in Dominica and people are moving against it! When this happens you are already part way to a solution!

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill, D.D. Pentecostal Evangelist.

Congratulations youth leaders for speaking against this evil which has permeated Dominica and among the youths and for doing your utmost to put a stop to another evil of our times.
Approach the government and the police and call a meeting to determine what could be done about eradicating this evil practice from Dominica.

The words and message of the Mother of God, the Ever Blessed Virgin Mary to a visionary which is a message for us all world-wide: “The world is in a state of sin, worst than at the deluge. It is necessary that God purify the world.”

Today, shockingly, it has become worse. I never thought I would read about this occurring in Dominica which is practiced from Dominica.
As the world progresses, it will become more so. Sadly, some youths are participating in this type of immoral lifestyle. Their minds are already tarnished. What kind of adult will they make?
This is the price for especially new technology which is supposed to be used for good but some are using it for evil.
The government in cooperation with the police and vice versa should do something about it. A Law should be enacted to prohibit the making of, distribution, selling and placing pornography over the Internet. It should also include accessing pornography on the Internet. Come on government and police department, please do something about it. Some youths are going astray and down slippery slopes. You who are the authorities have the obligation to do something about it. God is taking note and expecting this of you.
We have a stringent Law in Canada against pornography of this nature. Those perpetrators who are caught will be prosecuted. Take note Dominican government and police.

    • September 21, 2013

      Justice and Truth:

Thank you for sharing your insights about porn and for the strong comments.

Your most important comment was about the need for a LAW against the making, selling, distribution, and placement of porn.

Happy is the nation that does not need such laws.
Perhaps in the past Dominica has not needed anti-porn laws. Sad to say Canada needed them! If porn has shown its ugly face on the beautiful nature island the time has come.

Porn needs to be attacked on every front including both private and public consumption:
posters and billboards, magazines with their lewd pictures, T.V. shows (including advertising), theatre shows, videos, DVDs, and now – probably the worst of all – the internet. Porn is porn, and as long as people can get their eyes on it damage is going to be done. Criminals and potential criminals (sick minds) are the ones most likely to be devouring it privately behind closed doors to fuel their desires before they go out cruising.

Porn may never be completely eliminated. But the EPIDEMIC can be eradicated. Porn can be brought to the place where it is so rare in Dominica it is not a social problem.

Don’t misunderstand me. I am not even implying that all these expressions of porn have reached Dominica as they have Canada. I am only saying they do exist and cannot be ignored in preparing for an offensive.

The internet has given people many new ways of committing old crimes. Unfortunately the technology has got ahead of legislation and law enforcement. Government and the police need to catch up.

Not only is new legislation needed to deal with internet crime but new technology is required to to counter it. New laws must also be put in place with the reslove to have those laws enforced.

Somebody has to spearhead this action by forming a committeee or starting an organization to petition the government and start the wheels turning.

Any organization that wants to eradicate the porn epidemic should begin by petitioning the government for strong ant-porn laws and simply not give up until they have such laws.

You can expect to hear people say it is nobodys busness what they view in their own homes if it doesn’t hurt anybody else. Sound familar? Same old, same old! The truth is pornography DOES hurt others. It encourages premarital sex. It fuels prostitution. Studies have shown it has been the driving force behind crimes of sexual aggession against women and children including serial rape and serial rape-murder cases.

The responsibility to enforce the laws rests upon the police. The people have a civil obligation to report any violations to the police and see that they do their job. Needless to say, the people AND the police have a right to expect the co-operation of the courts and the honorable judges to enforce their nation’s laws.

Any organization that enters the fray should be prepared to stay in the battle and follow it through, attacking relentlessly on every front,
until the war is won. This involves meeting together often for up-dates, strategy planning, and mutual encouragement.

“All it takes for evil to succeed is for good people to do nothing.” (Author Unknown.)

The clarion call now is to individuals who are willing to commit to the cause.

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. Pentecostal Evangelist.

Do you mean, the former Virgin Mary , the mother of the man Jesus Christ. God has no mother. She was an earthly vessel used by God to bring the messiah to earth. She is long dead and gone and has no messages to give and she did not die a virgin either. There is no virtue in lifelong virginity if you are a married woman as Mary was.

Many people may not like to hear about the scriptures but if we “Man” Male and Female fear the Creator of of body that should not happen to us. Back in the garden of Eden what did Adam and Eve did– they cover themselves— they were exposed. Who took their photograph– well the story is real and is for our learning. Its all our responsibility– Parents need to monitor what their children are doing and looking at– we have monsters right in the home even when they are not on the streets. Church Leaders must not be afraid of speaking to young people about sex. We are leaving in an “E” World so everything in online. “Sex on line” We are all sinners… I am very sorry for what has been done to tarnish the reputation of those young ladies. Sex is beautiful and it was made for a male and female who are married. We are not “dogs”. How awful it is to see two dogs stick together while having intercourse. On television every is sexual— when listening to voice of life on tv and woman and a bottle– women are being sold cheaply. The Elder women suppose to teach the young women how to dress. This matter is every body business. I will not blame anyone or judge anyone. I could have been the victim.

Let us have some morale value for Jesus Christ sake.

Let us apply those scriptures in our lives starting with me—-

1 Thessalonians 5- 5 Ye are children of light and the children of the day, we are not of the night nor of darkness. 22; Abstain from all appearance of evil. We suppose to greet each with a holy kiss but our minds have gotten so corrupt.

Romans 12: I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that we present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. Be not conformed to this world: but be ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable. and perfect, will of God.

Women in Public Worship: In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobrity, not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls or costly array. 1 Peter 1:14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to former lusts in in your ignorance. But as he which have called you to be holy, so be he holy in all manner of conversation. Because it is written BE YE HOLY FOR I AM HOLY.

We were all born in sin– and he without sin cast the first stone… Let the strong help the weak.
We are less family gathering– we have become anti social– every one face is on a screen– facebook, bb, kindle fire, tablet– we are in the end times that is our distractions not to stay away from the WORD. Mark you we can still use those things to reach out to do the work for Christ. Do still say memory verse— How many people know where Jesus wept is taken from–

PARENTS MIND YOUR BUSINESS AT HOME– CHURCH LEADERS LOOK AFTER YOUR SHEEP– LET US ALL SAY JESUS CHRIST IS OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS– HOLINESS IS PURITY— IT WHITE– IT CLEAN– VIRGIN– THERE IS NO SHAME IN HOLINESS– THE WORLD WILL CALL HYPOCRITE– OUR GROOM IS COMING FOR A CHURCH THAT IS SPOTLESS– NO BLEMISH– -PRAY FOR ME AND I WILL PRAY FOR YOU— LET US FINISH THE RACE — JESUS CHRIST THE AUTHOR AND FINISHER OF OUR FAITH– I WANT TO HEAR GO AND SIN NO MORE– IN THE END WELL DONE GOOD AND FAITHFUL SERVANT–

FOR ALL FLESH IS AS GRASS, AND ALL THE GLORY OF MAN AS THE FLOWER OF THE GRASS, THE GRASS WITHERETH, AND THE FLOWER FALLETH AWAY.. BUT THE WORD OF THE LORD ENDURETH FOR EVER.
LET THE HOLY SPIRIT DRESS US– WE LOOKING ON THE TV AS TO WHAT WE SHOULD WEAR,,, AH OUR MODEL IS THE HOLY SPIRIT…

FOR WE ALL HAVE SINNED AND COME SHORT BY THE GLORY OF GOD.

Thank you for your sensible comments.

You are a person of the Word. 8)

I can tell from DNO that many people in Dominica think the same as you do.

Few speak out. Even less act.

Some Dominicans are saying what they now need are strong anti-porn laws. Perhaps these law were not needed before but obviously they think the time has come. :-o

They are waiting for somebody to form an anti-porn lobby that will relentlessly petition the government with list after list of voter’s names demanding tough legislation and the law enforcement to make it work before the problem  becomes too big to handle.

Will that person (those people) please step forward :?:

“Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.” (James 4:17) :!:

I appeciate those powerful scripture verses in your comments. The world will mock us for our faith in the Bible. But I have this to tell those who reject God and choose the pleasures of sin for a season. I have read the last chapter of the book. And do you know what? We win!

There is no substitute for the Word of God. The Apostle Pasul said “…take the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit,…” (Ephesians 6:17-1

I am sure if the Police want to find those people that post these videos they can and they should. Some of the participants may have been unaware that they were being filmed but I hear some who posted them are known. These are the ones who should be charged.

It’s such a sad situation. I don’t understand why someone would want to harm people in such an ungodly way. This doesn’t make the malicious person any better in no way, shape or form. You can’t be happy and dancing from someone else’s pain. At the end of the day, God will be the judge and you will surely be punished for doing the individuals involved this wrong-doing but here on earth it will not be any easier. GOD DO NOT LIKE UGLY. I want to say to those involved, hold your head up high, put God in all you do and remember that too shall past.

Thank you Jahisiah, Julie, Delroy, and all those who are drawing attention to the pornographic explosion in Dominica. The worldwide epidemic may best be explored at it’s root, for as popular author Shannon Ethridge says, every sexual longing is also connected to a spiritual longing. As humans we need to find a creative tension between both. “Fantasies are simply the brain’s way of trying to heal itself from unresolved tragedies and traumas. We mentally compartmentalize our pain to make room for pleasure.”
We HIGHLY recommend her book “The Fantasy Fallacy”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWnaZ_PvaPo and also the “Love, Lust, and the Longing for God” series by Justice St. Rain https://www.facebook.com/pages/Love-Lust-and-the-Longing-for-God/162622423851441

    • September 21, 2013

      Alan:

Thank you fo your insightful comments.

I have not read the books you recommend so I cannot comment on their contents.

However, your thesis is absolutely right as you quote from Shannon Ethridge “Every sexual longing is also connected to a spiritual longing.” The root cause of all sin is spiritual. This is even more so when it comes to sexual sins because they are an evidence of people mistaking lust for love or lookling for love in all the wrong places. They need to first experience the spiritual love of God and then let Him direct their lives into the proper channels to fulfill their need for natural love.

The ultimate battle against porn must be won on the spiritual plane. Unless men and women repent of their sins, receive Christ as their Savior, and experience the inner healing that only HE can give, they will still be bound by lust (or whatever other sin holds them captive) even if it is no longer available.

The gospel of Christ is the only true and lasting balm for all this world’s ills. Through the years I (and many other Chistians) have seen thousands of lives changed and completely transformed by the power of the cross.

To all those bound by sin and soul destroying habits I want to say

“It is no secret what God can do.
What He has done for others He will do for you.”

This is why I am an evangelist. Billy Graham put it this way. If a man discovered a cure for cancer and kept it a secret from the world he would be the worst kind of criminal.

      I refer you to Romans 3:10,23, 1 Corinthians 15:3,4, Isaiah 53:5,6, John 3:16, Revelation 3:20.

This porn epidemic is truly a stain on the moral fabric of our Dominican society. Unfortunately we are tackling the issue incorrectly and most persons are doing the typical Dominican thing: blaming the victims without taking the time to consider the root causes.

Most of us in Dominica are quite naive when it comes to discussing, teaching and disseminating HEALTHY (notice i said healthy) knowledge about sex and sexuality. We shy away from it and choose rather to cartoonize this overarching topic.

But we are no longer in the 70’s, 80’s or even early 90’s and our youth are exposed to far more information than we ever were; So what we fail to effectively and respectfully teach them as parents, teachers, leaders and responsible adults…they are learning over the internet and other social mediums.

Friends we need to make the change today…we may be far gone…but not lost.

Adults…learn, demand and engage in and healthy sexual relationships…break your negative cycles, the youth are watching. Be open with the youth…most importantly, let their sexual education begin and continue with you…it makes a difference.

    BLESS.

    • September 23, 2013

Nothing wrong with what you have said.

But you still have not told us exactly what it is adults are to teach the children and young people.

There is no textbook or educational program on earth that improves on what the Bible (the Word of God) tells us! Sex belongs in marriage. Between a husband and wife it is a beautiful thing. Outside of marriage between a man and woman – young or old – who are not married to each other it is a sin the Bible calls “fornication” and has dire consequences.

We have nurses, social workers, guidance counselors, and teachers within the system acting on the assumption that abstinance is not possible. They are telling young people “Since you can’t be good be careful” and instructing them in the practice of so-called safe sex.

There is no such thing as safe sex. Not all STD are transmited by body fluids. Condoms are better than nothing but not 100% safe. (a) They do not provide protection against all STD. (b) They have been known to break. Besides there is nothing that protects the human being against the psychological and emotional hurt that sometimes follows premarital sex.

There are educators saying “Abtinance isn’t possible. Kids are going to have sex anyway so we better tell them how to avoid unwanted an unwanted pregnancy or STD.” This is absolute rubbish! Young people must be taught there is no alternatve. They must be taught the reasons for remaining chaste until marriage. In cultures where abstinance is taught as the norm and chastity is expected of the youth failures are the exception. :-D

Yers, abstinance is possible :!: It worked for hundreds of years for those who were motivated to apply its principles. It is the only plan that is 100% guarranteed to avoid both unwanted pregnancy and STD. It builds a mutual respect for a lifetime between between a couple who are keeping company with serious intentions. It is the best way to assure that there will be maximum trust in the marriage if and when the two tie the knot. It gives parents an example for talking to their children when the time comes comes. The alternative is not something parents are usually proud to have their children know about.

We heard a sad story about a couple who had a sexually active courtship. After they were married he came home early one day to find his wife in bed with another man. Of course there was a big blow-up with the man running out the door with his clothes in his hands. When the dust settled and th couple were finally able to talk the woman said to her husband, “You didn’t seem to think there was anthing wrong with me having sex with a man who was not my husband before we were married.”

Yes, many people “do it”. That is why there are so many single mothers, and children growing up in one parent families with no fathers present.
And this is one reason why the divorce rate has gone through the ceiling. In Canada and the U.S.A. is is hovering beteen thirty to forty per cent, sometimes hitting 50 per cent, depending on what province or state is being looked at.

Proper sex education should begin low key in the home. It ought be be reinforced in the church to some extent by statements from the pastor in the pulpit. Then at an intermediate level in school it can be taught in religious instruction, or a health class or in physical education.

School boards must accept the responsibility to hire teachers who are committed to Judea-Christian morality and traditional family values. If they do this they won’t have to go looking later for “sex education specialists” to come in and instruct the students on how to “do what comes natural” without getting in trouble.

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill, D.D., Pentecostal Evangelist.

I felt the urge to comment on the last part of this article. History have repeated many of times in the past when people have made sex tapes, take explicit pics and it miraculously ended up on where..the world wide web. If you engage in sexual acts with an individual and they begin taping or snapping, Hello! what do you think their intend for that image or video to be, kept for their own personal viewing….oops that what you thought…silly rabbit. Lesson learnt…reputation tainted, but in time can be repaired. Get over it people.

In my opinion it is the distribution. In all cases the videos and pictures were not taken for the public but for the owners/participants. Yes we can question why it was necessary but the bottom line is you should not distribute such after it is stolen. Kudos to people who reported the page to Facebook. I know I did

    • September 21, 2013

The problem is the performers – those who “do it” in front of the cameras. 8-O

Only a sick mind would perform in, produce, or distribute this stuff. :-x

However, it must begin with those who act out the performances.

      (a) Sex outside of marriage is a sin to begin with. It spreads sexually transmitted diseases or STD. It results in girls dropping out of school to have babies. It causes social and finacial hardships for single mothers. It results in “one parent homes” where children grow up without a father which is one reason why they turn to drugs and get in trouble with the law. :(

Don’t tell  me all they have to do is practice “safe sex” because simple observation and a glance at the stats tells me whatever you call “safe sex” is not working. Obviously many of those who break God’s moral laws do not have the common sense or restraint to practice “safe sex”.

Couples in a loving committed Biblical marriage would never allow their most intimate monments to be filmed for ANYONE else to see. It does not happen. They know sex between a husband and wife is a beautiful thing. It is a special part of their marriage. It is at the very core of their relationship. It is something they keep private.

Those who perform for porn pics or movies of any kind are not generally happy people. If they are legally married at all it is only on paper, and very likely not their first marriage. They are not enjoying the intimate committed love that is part of a marriage. Usually their marriages could not be described in any sense as happy. :( :(

Single or marriage, many of those involved with porn have drug problems and this is especially true of the performers who are in the business of making movies; the paid performers. 8)

Some while acting in porn movies have contacted AIDS.

Many women have left the porn industry. Some are still young and hoping their past does not hinder them from getting a husband. Other are hoping their children (especially daughters) never come across one of their movies. Some have have found a knowledge of their past has hindered them from getting legitimate employment. :-x

Porn is more than a “slippery slope”. It is a drop into hell itself.

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill, D.D. Pentecostal Evangelist.

I am happy to see my youth are speaking out because, this is getting out of hand. Its so sad to see that pleasure is taken from spreading this horrible thing. Why can’t we have more respect for ourselves and others? why should we enjoy bringing down the name of YOUNG PEOPLE?
It is the young that has to make the difference so lets us do that by keeping positive

It is so sad that some persons will find pleasure in stooping so low to do these things to people. They clearly have no respect for themselves so wont for others.

Was it rape or abuse? stop that nonsense the people participating in this stupidness were aware of what was happening. I feel no sympathy for them.

It is clear that in the vidoes they did it for their private sharing and not for others to share. We all make mistakes in one way or another and learn from it. It is wrong for who posted the pics and videos. That person is way too shallow minded and has low self esteem. Go in peace and repent for this wrong doing
