AMP’s course on studio engineering and production came to a close on Friday 27th May with the delivery of certificates to the 20 participants by Mr. Merrill Matthew head of the Department of Continuing Education at the Dominica State College.

The course was done at Stone Creek Studio at Copt Hall and was facilitated by Canadian multiple Juno award winning engineer and producer, L. Stuart Young. Mr. Young, who has been engineering recordings for 25 years, brought a wealth of experience and knowledge having worked with many of the biggest names in music in Canada and the United States, including the late Prince for whom he engineered two albums.

The students learned the basic physics of sound, the use of different types of microphones and the proper way to use various effects as are commonly found in a recording studio.

The participants recorded, mixed and mastered three songs using different methods including recording a live band with no drum samples. One of the songs recorded had been written at Amp’s Songwriting course in April and provided the participants the opportunity to see a song developed from idea to composition, to recording, mixing and mastering.

The participants rated the course as follows:

  1. Overall, the course met my needs: 97%
  2. The Topics were relevant: 99%
  3. The length of the course was adequate: 84%
  4. The Instructor was competent: 100%
  5. The training Room was comfortable: 92%
  6. The course venue was suitable: 97%

The overall rating was 95%.

AMP’s next course is carded for the second week of September 2016 and will be on the business of music.

All AMP’s courses are made possible by the Government of Dominica which has provided the funding to support AMP’s effort to professionalize the music industry in Dominica with a view to making it a significant earner of foreign exchange, incomes and employment.

Some local “engineers” think that they too much for this course and hence are glaringly absent. But the problem was never recording. It was always post production MASTERING which we still dont have the software to get us the the decibel and radio wavelength level required for Int. marketing
