The calypso semi-final competition is being moved back to its usual venue at the Newtown Savannah, according to the Dominica Calypso Association (DCA).
The quarter final of the competition was held at the forecourt of the Windsor Park Sports Stadium but the venue did not find favor with calypso fans who complained of the lack of space, among other issues.
This decision to move back to the Newtown was unanimously taken by the DCA executive on Tuesday.
“Quite a bit of people made comments and they were not favorable as it relates to the venue,” PRO of the DCA, Davidson “De Observer” Victor said. “We are happy that we are able to listen to the views of the public and we are able to make a decision that is more favorable to the public.”
He stated that Calypso is “the people’s thing” and the people must be heard.
“If the people say that, then that is what it is because the people say whether it rain, whether sun, mud or not give them their Newtown Savannah,” he said.
Victor stated that cost of hosting the show at Windsor Park wasn’t an issue, noting that the cost of both venues “were not far apart.”
“So as it relates to the cost, it doesn’t really make too much of a difference,” he explained.
Victor said the association expects a “massive showdown” at the semi-final competition, pointng out, rather jokingly, that only Ebola would prevent fans from attending.
“I can tell you it is going to be a mash-up session,” Victor said.
The semi-final competition will be held at the Newtown Savannah on January 31.
