Winner of the 2009 Ti Matador pageant, Takenya Merrifield, has added one more pageant title to her belt as she defeated eight fellow contestants at the 2011 Carnival Princess Show yesterday.
Merrifield,11, copped the awards for Best costume and best in costume. She wooed the crown when she appeared as an “Enchanted Mushroom Garden” in the costume round of the event, which was held at the Harlem Plaza.
Merrifield said she was elated for her victory and said that she will do her best to represent her prestigious title. She thanked all who has helped her along the way.
She was sponsored by Fine Foods Inc.
Her chaperone and Principal of the Grand Bay Primary School, Charlene White-Christian described Merrifield as a very hard worker. She expressed pride in her student.
“After Miss Ti Matador she decided she wanted to go for Carnival princess and we decided to take a little break and go the following year. She really worked throughout that first year. Her teacher Miss Leatham worked very, very hard with her and we have seen results,” the principal said.
She continued, “I think that this year the competition was the best I’ve seen in a very very long time, I was actually a little scared I wasn’t sure what the results would have been but I think the young ladies did a fantastic job, they were very well prepared.”
Meanwhile the first runner-up position went to Britney Blanchard of the Convent Prep. She won the award for Best Talent.
Follow contestant Bianca Toussaint of the St Joseph Primary School emerged second runner-up.
Latanya Charles of the Goodwill Primary School was the third runner-up. She won the award for Best Speech.
The Miss Congeniality award went to Chelize Bell of the St Martin Primary School. Selena Bernard of the Campbell Primary School copped the award for Miss Photogenic.
Merrifield’s prizes include a complete scholarship to a secondary school from the Government of Dominica and a trip for two compliments of Win-Air.
The event was organized by the Rotaract Club of Roseau.

You had a very nice costume u deserved best costume but u should not have won. People like to vole to much. Britney should have won. 1st should be Selena. 2nd should be Bianca. 3rd should be Latanya. You are a disgrace to everyone. You should not have placed cause u were not good at all. Who is the person who made you do that STUPID talent. Congrats takenya, but you all know that Salena Bernard was the true winner of that crown or at least the first runner up position… and the judges and even Rotoract club should have been fair thats children we are dealing with. Now tell me what is Brittney Blanchard Doing in the first runner up position we all know that was a stolen price she received, and i know other Dominicans agree with me a child comes on stage sleeps wakes up and hops like a frog and you give her best talent whats a shame they need to stop robbing those girls before the Princess shows comes to nothing thats why they have so much trouble to get sponsorship, they are sometimes never fair or is it because certain sponsors put alot of money so they cannot be let down… Brittney you know you did not deserve that spot, once again Congrats Grandbay……and best of luck

well said, the judges were unfair convent had no place in that show she performed so poorly and they still placed her, but someone messed with the points the final point tallying and the truth must come to the light so that person or persons will have to say the truth campbell should have placed or is it because the school is not a recognised that little girl was so consistent she was excellent and they didnt give her the crown well at least they should have placed her….
