Conflicting figures over calypso season earning

Sye performing at the calypso finals

While an official of the Dominica Calypso Association says the DCA made well over EC$200,000 for the 2012 calypso season, the just published weekly edition of the Sun newspaper is estimating that the association made triple that figure – well over $600,000.

According to the newspaper, DCA officials admit to having had a “very good” season financially but also say that “the expense part was also very huge”.

With each ticket for the Calypso Finals sold at EC$70.00, most people would say they expected the DCA to “make a killing” this year, especially with the bumper crowds at this year’s shows.

“I can’t recall the figures at the top of my head but what I can say to you, is that we made well over $200,000 for the 2012 calypso season but like I said to you before, it has gone right back in the artform,” the Sun quotes DCA Treasurer Derrick “Hunter” St Rose as explaining.

For its part the paper and its publisher Charles James estimates that “based on VAT estimates, the DCA grossed EC$633,000”.

However it reports too that rough calculations of the figures presented by the DCA treasurer show that they spent “well over half a million dollars” for the season.

200,000.00 and 600,000.00 big difference here wee pal.
i would think that they made about that just at the finals cause thousands of people attended and the cost of one ticket was $70 was it not?plus it had V.I.P that was more money.mr treasurer you not good with figures and estimation nah pal.if we talking about calypso season we talking about starting from eliminations (which by the ways used to be $0.99 and this year was $10.00 hmmm)to quarter finals to semi finals.and everything else. i more think alyou made that in profits, not overall.awah.

The DCA needs to cut out all these usless MC’s who do not contribute to the upliftment of the show, DCA would be better off to have an MC who can draw his own crowd and attract the attention of the public unlike the Val and Bruno conbination who does the same thing every year, $70 was a waste of personnel funds only to have these two non-contributers to the show

DNO,I think your writer does not understand what is being said from a financial perspective. If:
    Gross revenue: $633K
    Estimated Exp: $400K
    Net income before taxes: $233K

There is no conflict. The official sadi they made well over $200K he is correct and if VAT records said that they gross $633K that may very well be true. You are comparing apples to oranges.

Why do we behave in such a manner? The Calpyso Association should finalize its financial statements and then if it wishes, disclose the results to the public. We can all make our assumptions and it is interesting that the Sun Newspaper would have details about the private matter of an organization’s VAT payments.

What they make has to be reinvested into the artform. There are also expenses to be paid, VAT and all of that …why is it that some persons have to find fault with everything – even bringing in and alledging borball- Come on let us make positive remarks until there is really a reason for any other

THE DCA ALWAYS DEPEND ON THE FANS TO PATRONIZE THE CALYPSO SEASON, AT THE END OF IT THE FANS DON’T GET ANY THING IN RETURN BUT A SHOW.I BELIEVE THAT THE DCA OWE IT TO THE FANS TO COME CLEAN WITH OUR PATRIOTIC FIGURES ALSO THE DCA SHOULD MAKE SOME DONATIONS TO CHARITIES.

So what is all this horah about what they make. Conflicting figures according to whom? Charles James & the Sun are not part of the organising of calypso so why is he trying to stir up controversy. According to the sun they grossed about $600,000,does he know what the expenses are? DNO maybe, just maybe, as a media outlet, you should conduct your own investigation and stop quoting others!!!!

The Sun Newpaper needs to do better than that and go get some real news by doing some investigative journalistic work.

How about highlighting areas in Dominica where the roads are in a deplorable condition? Go around the island and start taking pics and publishing them. For example, has anyone seen the entrance to the La Plain Health Center? Oh my, Oh my, what a disgrace! Not even the doctor can drive into the yard of that medical facility. It’s a shame!

Maybe if the Sun publishes the photos, then something would be done….. How about that Mr. James?

      March 19, 2012

That’s it exactly. The total returns may have been 600k but minus their cost it is $200,000 in profits.

Sorry Calypso is the people’s business. If not then the Calypso association must register as a private enterprise and pay their taxes and dues. It is no wonder why the politicians in government can tell you “ it’s non of your damn business” and people can sit back a cheer. It is high time we stop this arrogance and ignorance.
