‘De Professer’ retains Junior Monarch crown

Sheldon ‘De Professer’ Alfred.

Sheldon ‘De Professer’ Alfred outdid 11 other junior calypsonians again to secure his crown at the Junior Calypso Monarch Competition last night.

De Professor’s winning song was ‘Vacancy.’ He was crowned the Junior Calypso Monarch for the first time last year with ‘Paros Everywhere.’

The junior calypsonians, who are students of primary and secondary schools around the island, performed impressively on the Harlem Plaza stage, stimulating a lot of crowd reaction.

The runner-up winners were:

First-runner-up Nyjah ‘De Prophet’ Denni with his song ‘Be Fair’ representing the St. Mary’s Academy.

Second-runner-up Lemar ‘Irish Kid’ Irish with his song ‘A Cry for the Book’ representing the Saint John’s Catholic Primary School.

Third-runner-up Nacheal ‘D-Nacheal’ Walsh with her song ‘Violence Don’t Play’ representing the Isiah Thomas Secondary School.

The other calypsonians received a participation plaque.

The Triple K International Band provided musical accompaniment at the Leo Club organised show.

Much congratulations to the much deserving winner of this year’s competition. However, I want to give special congratulation to the Irish Kid. I was just marveled at the potential of this kid. To have such a great stage personality, voice control and charisma at such this young age is outstanding. He was the youngest in show but proved to be the most promising in my eyes. Keep it up Irish kid. You’ll get them next year.

I am aware that there is a sponsorship challenge for the Junior Calypso Competition. I however think that they competition such be divided into age group and type of school. By that I mean say an 6 – 12 age group and a 13 – 17 age group, to go with this a Primary and Secondary School grouping. This will allow students to graduate into the various groups and eventually the Senior Competition.

We must also see it as the student of the secondary schools are always at an advantage when compared to those of the Primary/younger age.

Please Lions Club, take this into next year for an interesting competition and larger crowd.

Congrats to the Professor. You deserved the win last night, however, that Irish Kid was really the new sensation on the Junior Monarch circuit this year. He looks like the new Dice if he keeps it up and is just 9 years old. I like to see that the youth in Dominica are still actively involved in their culture. Keep it up kids, at the end of the day you all are winners!!

Congratulations to De Professer. You deserved it.
As an avid calypso lover, I knew that he could have won it when I heard them introduced their songs at the opening of carnival.
