The islands of Dominica and St. Lucia will once again come together on Saturday October 1, 2016 to open Creole month in Canada with its signature showcase event: Two Islands: One Culture – A Creole Extravaganza.
The event is expected to draw a full house of patrons from the Commonwealth of Dominica and St. Lucia Diaspora, and friends of the Caribbean, who will come together to support this cultural extravaganza.
The Commonwealth of Dominica, Ontario Association (CDOA) and the St. Lucia Toronto Association (SLTA) will host the evening.
One of the main highlights of the Cultural Extravaganza is the pageantry of the St. Lucia meets Dominica Madame Wob Creole competition. Six young ladies, three from Dominica and three from St. Lucia, will vie for the title of Madam Wob Creole 2016. The reigning Madame Wob Creole Hernica DorivalCorriette of Roseau, Dominica, will crown the winner.
The Associations of St. Lucia and Dominica have a history of collaborative efforts that include the celebration of His Grace Cardinal Felix in Scarborough, Ontario and they, along with their Haitian counterparts, established Canada’s first Journen Creole (Creole Day.)
The Creole Extravaganza will also include cultural dance and music from both islands, and a delectable array of Caribbean food and drinks will be served. Music will be provided by DJ Velo of Dominica and DJ Toxic of St. Lucia.
The Commonwealth of Dominica, Ontario Association (CDOA) celebrates its 46th Anniversary as a leading Caribbean Association. It has over the last several years provided more than $25,000 in scholarships to young persons of Commonwealth of Dominica descent, and in 2008, donated $35,000 to health care services in Dominica.
Last year, the CDOA aided in the collection and distribution of more than $250,000 in cash and kind to the Government and people of The Commonwealth of Dominica following the devastation of Tropical Storm Erika.
The CDOA hosts its Annual Independence Anniversary Gala on Saturday November 5, 2015. Dominica’s Lady of Song, Ophelia Marie is expected to headline that event.
The Saint Lucia Toronto Association (SLTA) is a 46-year-old non-profit organization that works within the multicultural landscape of Canada to preserve and promote the cultural traditions, language and heritage of the island of Saint Lucia. We are dedicated to projects in St. Lucia that
enhance education, health & development for children and youth in disadvantaged situations.
