Thirty-eight members of the Mas Ka Kle Cultural Association from the town of Les Abymes in Guadeloupe visited Dominica over the weekend of 12th to 14th August.
The full group consists of more than 400 members and is one of the better known GWO KA exponents and is famous in Guadeloupe for the marathon sessions of drumming and dancing known as “laroz” which are regularly put on by different GWO Ka groups.
These events are very similar to the traditional Bele sessions which were put on in Dominica, particularly in Grand Bay and Castle Bruce.
The group is also well known for its unique carnival presentations which derive their inspiration from African costumes and masks (hence the name). In February of this year the group hosted the Karina Cultural group fromtheKalinago territory as well as craft persons from the territory.OPHELIA was the specially invited Guest and patron of the week of events which highlighted Dominica’s artistic output and craftsmanship.
While in Dominica the group put on presentations of drumming at the Roseau Market on Saturday August 13. On Sunday the 14th the group of 38 persons visited with the Kalinago people and exchanged culinary and drumming experiences.
The visit of the Mas Ka Kle group was assisted in Dominica by the Discover Dominica Authority. The group leaves Dominica today (Monday August 15) to return to Guadeloupe, but before leaving they expressed a desire to return to Dominica either for the World Creole Music Festival or the Carnival celebrations.
