Organizers boast Stardom Calypso Tent will be ‘best show ever’

The organizers of Stardom Calypso Tent are boasting of a special ambience and improved sound, along with several new features, that they say will make this year’s Stardom Calypso Tent the ‘best show ever’.

The event was launched on Thursday, at the Kaiso House in Bath Estate where it was revealed that the Sisserou Hotel, the original home of Stardom, will once again house the event.

The first show, which will feature all the main Stardom calypsonians and a special introduction, is carded for Wednesday January 11, 2012.

Stardom officials say as usual the tent will continue every Wednesday during the calypso season.

“This is going to be better than in the past,” a confident Coordinator Norman Letang informed  the launch.

Letang and others involved in the tent say the return of veterans Hunter and Scrunter – both former Kings, and De Webb to the competition this year, is expected to add to the quality of the show.

Letang revealed that during the course of the season, there will be a ‘Lady’s Night’ component which will feature the Carnival Queen contestants and the talent of female calypsonians.

Old school calysonians will also be given the opportunity to bring some of their greatest hits to the stage when Stardom hosts a “Back in Time Night.”

In the words of Norman Letang “the place is going to be on fire”.

Swinging Stars Band will, as it has done for the past few decades, provide musical accompaniment.

Pointing to last year being one of the worst years for the tent, President of the Dominica Calypso Association, Kelly “The Ghost” Williams, said he expects that the tent will rebound because of the top notch 2012 performances that are expected.

The organizers have confirmed that sponsor Digicel has put forth a $15,000 cash and kind contribution towards the event. Belfast Estate also presented a $10,000 contribution.

Other sponsors include Courts Dominica, Signman, and DOMLEC.

You know, based on the type of feed by one hears, sees etc, it is clear to see that there is a division among the tents. I think a good bzness way of dealing with this is for each of the tents organizers to come to some level of compromise and have artists of each tent sing in the other tents each week that way both sides with have the opportunity of experiencing the other and the artists will also get an opportunity of working with musicians from both tents. It would benefit both sides.

Organisatiobs try different locations for their shows in an attempt to give patrons more comfort and to get a feel of the ambiance of the venue, bt if the venue is too costly or it takes away from the patrons freedom to move around freely then you will be losing something and you must please customers even if the new venue is modern it might take some time for people to get acustomed to it, in the meantime to sustain you show AND KEEP IT ALIVE AND PROFITABLE OR AND RELEVANT THE BEST THING TO DO IS RETURN QUICKLY TO WHERE THE PUBLIC KNOWS STARDOM RESIDES. IT MAY JUST BE OR ALSO INCLUDE A STRAINED RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN VENUE OWNER AND STARDOM MANAGEMENT. ANYWAYS IT DOES NOT MATTER STARDOM WAS DOING FINE AT SISSEROU OK.

@ andre white is ppl like you that creat class everywhere you go. dont you kno is all about de art form? there was a time stardom was known as the elite tent and the calypsonians in that would get all de air play and privileges… now unity tent was for ppl quote or unquote low class and wouldnt get much air play.they would be regarded as de kwas calypsonians or the ppl dat hardly pass eleminations dats de way we use to run b4.yes we have very good calypsonian who bring out good stuff every yr but de others should get equal treatment cuz nothing is bigger than de art form.dont you forget there were calypsonians who were there b4 n they have gone and de vibes still rolling.so plz i recommend u support both tents for love of the calypsoes

Star-what? Last year, Stardom was eclipsed by Mas Camp. Mas camp was in a more central location, had good calypsoes and seemed to be better organized. Quite satisfying. Stardom was caught up wondering what day they wanted the tent. smh. I’d like to see Stardom get organized, then i might take the drive up there and hear some calypso.

    • Hmm
      January 6, 2012

I guess you didn’t read the story which shows that the organizers of the tent have clearly recognized their errors and have made moves to correct that.

Do you people even pause to think before you comment? Or is it always open season for criticism of everything under the sun.

heard a voice clipping where he clearly indicated that the venue last year was pretty much a thumps down in terms of accoustic appeal, plus sound system which encorprates that venue isnt up to stand.

those a critical to any showbiz venue, maybe we do need to do a logistic design when we pretend to be showbiz friendly, and completely ignorant of the standards that govern those aspects!

Mr letang you better be real base on last years performance stardom was a dismal failure because of the quality of the calypsoes and the failure of these calypsonians in your tent to tackle the real issues that affect the masses, let me remind you that calypso is social commentary, social commentary should reflect what is currently taking place in our dominican society and by extension the caribbean/world, can stardom search within itself and answer the question

    • But de Idea
      January 7, 2012

Failure? That’s why they got 3 out of 4 places at the finals right?? Okkkaaaayyy(in a daddychess voice!!) Think my people, think!

This stupid ignorant fool called ‘CIA on the Watch” is such an idiot that all he can do is bring politics into everything. No wonder the likes of you and the ‘Puppet Master Song Writer (KingMaker)and all the “Blues” look towards carnival time to try to play your DIRTY POLITICS like calypso is ONLY about BASHING THE GOVERNMENT.

Yes, you may flock Bobby’s Place and jump up like crazy to all the Skerrit bashing, BUT Skerrit will continue to have the last laugh at the polls. Silly fools. Let’s all enjoy our cultural expressions around carnival time and STOP mixing in politics!!!!
