Calypso fans were given a treat on Saturday night at the car park of the Windsor Park Sports stadium as they witnessed the 2015 edition of the Calypso Quarter Final Competition.

Newcomer De Professor had patrons dancing to his lively tune called “God of Calypso Kingdom.”

De Professor is a three-time Junior Calypso Monarch.

Next was Sting Ray, who as the first calypsonian on the Dominica Calypso Asssociation’s reserve list, replaced “Webb,” who’s not competing this year.

Quite unlike De Professor’s catchy number, Sting Ray’s selection, called “Abuse,” held the audience captive as she came on stage depicting a battered and bruised victim of domestic violence. Resounding applause and murmurs of “well executed” could be heard among the crowd after the performance.

Patrons responded in similar fashion as Karessa graced the stage dressed in pink pants and tie and and a white shirt, singing his “Call me Name.”

Garbed in his pastor’s gown with a cross hanging from his neck, Young Bull gave a true-to-form performance of “Pastor Bull” which drew a fitting response from the audience.

Other notable performances came from The Superior Picky, with his popular “World Cup” number, whose performance featured clumsy footballers dusting off each other’s behind and Jay Dee, who appeared on stage as a vagrant, had fans doubling over with laughter as he used gibberish to accompany his “Mad Man in Town” song.

Bobb was also outstanding in his delivery of “You”ll Never Know” which has been described as one of the finest calypsos of the season.

There were some disappointments at the show with Wave and Leona, who made it all the way to the final last year, failing to impress the judges.

Wave’s selection “Dictators on our hand” and Leona’s “Bend down low” will not part of line up for the semi final despite the sizable amount of fan support generated by both performances at the show.

Other quarter final casualties include Beno, Della, Soul Puss, Bettle J, Checker, Mask Eruption, Haxey, Daddy Miller, Beo and Liberator.

Meanwhile the calypsonians who will move on to the semi-final competition are: Explosion, Black Diamond, Boople, Sting Ray, Karessah, Lady Star, Comforter, Vigilante, Daddy Chess, Superior Picky, De Professor, The Bobb, Chris B, Jama B, Observer, Jay Dee, Lugurz, Hunter and Young Bull.

The competition was judged based on lyrics, melody, rendition and presentation.

The judges were Garford Joseph, Jason Jno Baptiste, Trudy Christian, Ainsworth Irish, Hugetter Andrew, Sherma John and Evelina Baptiste.

The calypso semi-final is carded for the 31st of January.

Wow how did they forgot Boople thats an error lets forgive the writer ok. By the way I have a little problem with Boople Lyrics, if the cars are strong how is it that they cheap, if they not even good to throw why sell them, if the public ask you to get those models and they not good to throw who then are you selling them to, the same public? The song is contradicting itself or maybe is me that doh understand it. help me please, but lyrics must make sense in a Calypso not just words sounding nice and because we like the artist or writer. I think! If something is soooo cheap its not worth to be thrown in the land fill, and you saying that these are the models the public ask you to buy to boost the economy, but who is going to buy them son, Skerritt? You mean he will buy all those cars from you. hahahahaha. The writer needs to explain this one to me.

The Quarter Final result was rubbish and bias as everything else in Dominica! I can’t believe how some of the seasoned Calypsonians were’ snobbed ‘ and undeserving individuals given their slot…
The Competition was judged based on lyrics, melody. rendition and presentation?
If that’s true…… I rest my case. Go figure!!!

The person who write that news seem to have a very big problem with one of the top five Performers or the song ” Cheap Cars ” by Boople’ that they even left his name.
Boople’ is one of those who made it to the Semi Finals with flying colors, with a wonderful Calypso “Cheap Cars” what a wonderful performance. the song is calling suggested names by the public for the models of cars that he is making for Dominica. Big song Boople’ this song is going to be in the finals.. many People will agree with me..
the news writer did not forget.. they are just an Old Karbooway, Yo Pas Bon Pou Je’Te’

Some people should look at themeselves in a mirror before calling people’s names in songs.
