EHS: Portsmouth artiste, ‘A-DiDi’ releases video

Addison ‘A-DiDi’ Aaron
Addison ‘A-DiDi’ Aaron

Portsmouth-based recording artist Addison ‘A-DiDi’ Aaron has released a somewhat controversial music video aiming to show his own view of what Dominican life is for its youth, and why they live the way they do.

The video is for his new single ‘767’ a combination of hip hop/dancehall.

A-DiDi, who is part of the group Lionheart Records, believes that many people question the ‘swag’ lifestyle of young men in particular, regarding it as a lack of ambition and wasteful spending in an otherwise poor and even backward country. But he doesn’t believe that economic circumstances should mean that the youth should not seek to enjoy life.

“The concept of the video is to show everyone that our approach to it all is no matter what’s going on we always enjoy ourselves as Dominicans, rise above all the negativity and shine as one of the best Caribbean countries,” A-DiDi stated.

The video was shot mostly on board a yacht, according to the artist, in order to “represent the tropical side of Dominica and be different at the same time.”

‘767’ was shot and edited by local media production company Ambo Visuals and is one of a string of recent summer video releases by the company.

As far a i know these are a good set of young men doing what they love! He has to cater to what the people wants and not what you think he should do. Caan you tell me that unless someone not singing a calypso or some bouyon that they not Dominican? I say leave them alone! Not like he bothers with you all anyway!

I personally think that it is a good song. And yes, in the beginning he does have a bit of a rick ross sound.

Hmm The song brings out a great message. based on my perspective of it.. It’s a great avenue, listening to the first time would not capture the essence, try listening to it a third time right after the second. I got the message… however, The video could have been directed differently. I believe AMBO did a great job to capture the singers vision, but I’d think it would have been a greater video if we had some acting, where a person growing up and have to run from home to school to graduate to struggling for a job and so on.. that would have ELEVATED this video and this song to higher grounds.. but amidst all this negative comments.. Think carefully before you all decide to air out your issues. I DO NOT know the young guy and I do not know who own’s Ambo visuals.. but they’re doing something great. Great avenues.. just a little more direction and soon you shall be flawless!!

Really u on his stage name?? Damn fool lemme step down to your level for a moment his stage name is just a shortened form of his real name! Smdh are you serious?? You cannot be this dumb. If you wanna comment look at the video and listen to the damn song, and not only this one look at his previous work. You’ll see that’s a young man that’s talented and driven. What have you done with your talent and skills?? Oh wait you probably don’t have or maybe you’re just sitting on it?

Nothing is wrong with the song. Its always goin to have dream killers trying to shoot down a dream. Posie has alot of talent and I admire their community for dat. They had a talent extravaganza and the turn out was great. Ambo Visuals possie, choeb possie, lion heart records possie. Saw a modeling show from like 2 years back and this one girl really stood out. Met her one say n she had a great personality. She mentioned she was from possie n talked alot about her town. I wish ppl from roseau would be supportive and brag about where they from. Over here ppl never want to participate in anything positive but quick to cry down ppl who trying. I wish more of us from roseau would run to a studio n drop a track on a Friday night instead of goin bayfront n drink rum, smoke and call everybody that pass by Salop.

now thats what im talking bout. n what the h*** r u pple talking bout. thats d quality of video n music i can see being signed on an international label. when jay-z signed rihanna did she audition with a bajan song. no. she sang the music she knew wld get her signed. does she make bajan music?. no. she makes d genre of music that gives her international fame. does she deny where shes fr or ashamed of it? no. she heavily markets her island. i really dont see why we as dominicans like to hold back the things that cld potentially give us international exposure.

the video is on point. very classy. classy females. good sound. good tone of voice. being heard by the right pple thats a video that cld easily get the artist signed. good job artist n crew. maybe soon i may see u on BET signed to maybach music. huh!

Big up my neighbour addison! The critics should make u stronger and not break u! As a musician one should be able to take negative criticism as well as The positive, now with that being said … where’s the originality, What’s up with the Rick Ross grunt and REALLY ! What’s music coming to this ??!! Showing “niggas” you can afford alcohol. Please wheel and come again underneath that facade there has to be an artist under there somewhere. When you’ve got talented Dominicans paving the way and then watch this crap it’s like -_- WTF ! We just took 10 steps back

I am still awaiting a release of Irish Folk Music so I could jump up and say “yea, de yout dem tryin a ting.”

Getting tired of all these imported genres and the fake accents. Jamaicans are laughing at the way we trying to imitate them and the black Americans must be saying we have no talent. Sad.

    • August 21, 2013

i cant understand the comment of so called ppl we are to look up to. if it was a drug bust with these youth i bet u will say young ppl nowadays and discriminate. now they are staying out of trouble doing something that they love and are still get ridicule. have u listen to the lyrics of the song did u actually take the time out to grasp the message, i bet you didn’t but u running your mouth about no talent. why don’t you try it ? the world is evolving so should you and don’t try to bring dwn the young ppl

    August 21, 2013

im not against de artiste. im against his style and creativity.my point is he should be having his own style instead of trying to imitate a style which americans thereselves don’t even like. last album rick ros released had if not all or near all his tunes and beats sounding alike.is that what u want for our own up coming artiste?stupid peoples when r we gonna learn. And to the Ambo guy u r geting somewhere keep up the good vibes. but don’t copy them other producers style. i compered it with some others,u have style and its very good.

As I always say I am not a fan of the hip hop but I would like to congratulate the young people who keep producing these good quality music videos and also to the artists who are doing some good work. Keep on striving to get better. I do have one criticism of the song though- I just could not get the lyrics – my advise is to work on the clarity and diction. One more thing – the word nigga is and should not be identifiable with hip hop . Essentially you can produce a god song hip hop without the despicable word ” Nigga ” – I need not go into the “historics”

  37. August 21, 2013

Aleast young people trying to make a living through music rather than drugs .keep it up it will only get better .haters back off and support positive living

    August 21, 2013

While I applaud the youth action to find a positive outlet for their talents and I support the artistic vision, creativity and overall intent of the musicians, I truly wished that they would follow their own lyrics and rep where you coming from. Being Dominican is more than just waving a flag, I really am disturbed by the accent copying prevalent among our young artists, why do reggae artists have to sound Jamaican or rappers sound American? Represent where you come from then maybe we will get international recognition more easily because then and only then will you be unique and genuine. Just my two cents!

    • No name
      August 21, 2013

You are definitely right about that. They are doing a good job with their creativity, but wish they sounded more Dominican. I listen to African “hip-life” music (a combination of R&B and rap) and the artist there sound totally african….slipping in some local languages and dialects…NEVER changing their accents. Their music is truly unique.

Other than that, we must be proud of our youths who are trying to remain positive and stay out of trouble.

    • Just Blaze
      August 21, 2013

If you doing dancehalll you must have the jamaican accent for it to be authentic dancehall. If you doing rap and the accent not on point it doesnt sound good. When byron lee who is a jamaican was singing soca he went away from his jamaican accent. Its just how it is. Doesnt mean you are being less of a dominican if you sing dancehall with a jamaican accent. If you speaking with it in conversation then that is a different story.

      • Just me
        August 21, 2013

sorry Blaze my point is it still doesn’t sound authentic and that is my problem! Accent aside! Why don’t we come up with some beats which mix our Caribbean flavour with what we have imported and make something fresh something that the American Rap Market doesn’t have, something the Jamaicans cannot identify as copycat! Something that has a uniquely Dominican twist. Just a suggestion. Because I recognise that our youth are talented and we need to take that talent to the next level.

      • Really?
        August 22, 2013

Sorry I had to reply under your post but there’s no reply button for “just me” post. @just me Maybe because right know there is no major recording label out there signing artist for “Caribbean flavor”. Just like everyone else he’s looking for a way out the bottom, trying to get to the top. And in other to do that he has to cater to what the people wants, what sells. Not what you think he should do.

I am from Dominica and I don’t share that sentiment. I couldn’t make out a lot of the lyrics and I know the artist speaks English. There was an overall lack of articulation and the sound was mediocre and easy to forget. The video was “ok” tho … just a tad bit tacky.. You might need to seek KaYYo’s advice when doing your next video…
