EHS: Renegades Tent is a blessing in disguise – Show Down Mas Camp

Showdown Mas Camp manager, Daryl Bobb thinks Renegades tent is a success story for Mas Camp.
Showdown Mas Camp manager, Daryl Bobb says Renegades tent is a success story for Mas Camp.

It would appear that organizers of Showdown Mass Camp do not see the formation of a new calypso tent this year by three former Mas Campers, as a threat, or any great loss, to their tent. It’s rather, a blessing in disguise, they say.

“There’s a positive in everything that occurs. Another good thing about this for me,(is that) Renegades (the name of the new tent), for Mass Camp, is a success story,” Camp Manager, Daryl Bob, said in an interview with Dominica News Online (DNO).

“Because what you have; you have three guys that are moving on to do their own thing. It means that their years with Mass Camp whatever they have learnt from Mass camp, whatever they have developed as artists …they have learnt something.”

He said it’s like an employee who has moved on to open their own business. ” You can only offer them your blessing, but they will always take credit for the foundation,” he explained.

Bobb added that it is a good move “in the overall interest of calypso in general, hoping that, they just do things the way that it’s supposed to be done and then we can all have an exciting season”.

“Mass camp has always been known to have a very long show and this movement of these three guys and whomever may follow them, may help us in having the show a bit more tight, more precise…between the hours of 8 and 12.30 to 1pm for the maximum.” However, he indicated that to date, no other calypsonians have informed Mass camp that they will be moving to any other camp.

Earlier this week in an interview with Dominica News Online, one of the founding members of Renegades Tent, Peter Prosper, explained that he and the two other founders of the tent, Narrin “Trendsetter” Murphy, and Dexter “Derose” Peltier, had decided to break away from Showdown Mas Camp because they were not satisfied with the conditions.

Their new tent opens on the 23rd of January.

Bobb described the trio as ‘borderline’ artists who are “no real loss” and said Mas Camp is now focusing on preparations as the tent is expected to open on Friday January 17, at the Harlem Plaza.

“We are, I would say, pretty much in second gear, maybe by Tuesday next week we should be in third gear in terms of our preparations…Following our press launch, we will begin rehearsals on Saturday for that matter, and following all of that we are opening on Friday 17th at the Harlem Plaza from 8 pm.”

He said Mas Camp will be adopting a different format this year in which each of the tent’s core artists will feature on different nights.

“At each of our shows we are going to be featuring an artist doing some of his past tunes like a concert style, and obviously, Mass camp is known for the flare and so on, but we are hoping to keep the spirit and be a bit more focused on our calypsoes and our personalities this year,” he remarked.

It saddens me, why Dominica suffering with this continous devide.I am not going to join the chorus of bashing. It is unfortunate that an effort to take calypso to Dominican in north America, suffer such a setback in relationship and split the calypso lovers of DA.I respect the guys for taking action to move on,because they were dissatisfy with the treatment they feel was not in their intreast, ijust wish it did not have to come to this. However it is what it is,to me the good in this,is a new tent is born and that is good for calypsonians.I applaud Peter for being open about his stance, without enemity and appealling to his partners to focus on making this work and leave the dirty laundry out of it.Though i wished Bob would not have taken that cheap shot at the Renegrade3.
With that said,I wish all well, there is room for all,and calypso will always have controversy.Dominicans must expect Politics in calypso, politics make calypso what it is,not all this jump and wave and roll your bumper on me alone.Anyway Happy Calypso Season to all.Respect even though you doe accept.

So they are border line and no real loss? That’s why they could work and not get paid? Is only the favorite and those in charge that would cash in? I understand. I even hear the favorite get help to clear the green jeep. While the “border line” artists get zero dollars and zero cents? No real loss? well u are right in some sense…because since you were not paying them, they being their or not will not affect the pockets of the selected few who would come together to lie and say a tent to cover PSU grounds cost 40 thousand dollars?

Garcon give me a break eh.

All the best to Renegades Tent. Do things right and you guys will be fine.

Bobb you are a headliner, yes because you make it finals but not a crowd loved artist.. people look for wit and satire at the tents do you bring that ..i dont think so

I think the artist that moved away are brave and maybe because you personally benefit from the kitty ( cash tin ) you may not see things the way they did

Nonetheless i wish all tents the sucess that they deserve

Daryl Bobb I would really like to understand what you are saying. Your analogy is way off base and no amount of explanation can change the reason for the move. if these three guys were being treated well by Showdown mas camp, there is no way they would leave. But we all know what has been happening in Mas Camp. One set eating the whole cake. But TIME WILL TELL

Daryl I find it is unfear to say that the 3 calypsonians are “borderliners”, because they are the ones who bring “KICKS” & “LIFE” to your shows.

Bobb and Pat have some real serious issues. Can you please enlighten us on the conditions which the others are dissatisfied about? Why are you all not paying the calypsonians? Why did you all move from the CSA after spending sooo much money? Did you all even pay them? I know for a fact that I will NOT be attending Mas Camp this year. You pay them to enter for Pat to feed his household and leave the calypsonians broke. Maybe Dice alone he paying……More to come
