After an entertaining night in which twenty calypsonians were all competing to secure their spot in the calypso 2010 finals, only nine were fortunate enough to make it to the final competition.
The following are the list of calypsonians which have advanced to the finals:

5. Cecil ‘Checker’ Burnette with his song entitled ‘Deviance’.
6. Daryl ‘The Bobb’ Bobb with his song entitled ‘Fugitives’.
7. Tasha ‘Tasha P’ Peltier with her song entitled ‘He’s A Boy’.
8. Murphy ‘Sye’ Jno Jules with his song entitled ‘Doctor Finger’.

GHETTO PRINCE– definitely he had the voice of the night. great poise, confidence and the message was quite potent at this time of mounting deviance. He appealed to his subjects and the youth have no better an apostle like the prince to push home the message.This song is lyrically strong and he performed it flawlessly and the accompaniment was excelllent.
DUTCHESS—She put on the most improved performance from the quarters and mark you I didnt believe she shude have made it into the semis but she rose to the ocasion that night and was at her all time best. The degree of emotion she put into the song was out of this worls and at the same time she maintained her professionalism and was quite clear. The message was again quite pointed and as a youth brought it out against the incidence of crime and violence in our caribbean society. So her omission was shocking.
DELLA– It seems that semi finals is her furthest destination for one of the most underrated female calysonians in the country. I think he song is the most topical for the season ; this is so in light of the global economic metldown and the many difficulties with the INTERNATIONAL DIASPORA is undergoing. Many peolple are indeed trapped in paradise and yet home is the real paradise. In want for a better life they are confronted with endless difficulties and just cannot or are ashamed to come back home. Its a song which many Dominicans can identify with. ITS for real. I think she was undone by the judges.

HOW IS IT THAT THOSE MADE IT INTO D FINALS:
OBSERVER- (to d next level) is a great concept with great melody but very poor lyrically and absolutely incoherent.
BOB- one of the best exponent of vocals in the island; he has a great stage presence but the song lacks direction and is confusing and messageless! Just laden with political issues which were improperly articulated.
SOUL POUSSE- I just dont know what the judges were looking for at best it was a mediocre song not even in the top 12 that night.

I think TASHA P might just make history and has two bombshell songs but some observers maintain that HE IS A BOY could have been much more balanced and could be slightly remodeled to deal with some of the perceived inadequacies of the women also but it would have to be rechristened from a more gender friendly perspective. Maybe a new chorus enlightening our women folks that they themselves do act irresponsibly might appease mankind a little on the finals and could cement her place into HISTORY as our first FEMALE MONARCH.( IF YOU ARE A FAN MAYBE YOU CAN DRAW THAT TO HER ATTENTION).
oh CHECKER – HE WAS AT HIS ALL TIME BEST AND DID PUT ON A TREMENDOUS PERFORMANCE with a good second song on d finals he could cause a SHOCKER! A perfect gentleman and most underarted Calysonian in the country does possess tremendous talent and 2k10 could well be his year.

I am in total agreement with “Not Pleased” comments.
But then again, I am not a judge, so we just have to live by their decisions.
However, I find that the calypsoes that people are enjoying the most and can give us a real enjoyable finals were left out.
So far it seems Kharessa is still in the lead.

Everytime i hear “SOUL PUSS” song i get goose pumps. That song is one of my best calypso and the way he brought it out on Saturday the judges had no choice.
I know everyone cannot make it the finals but i was really disappointed “BENO” was not in the top nine although i don’t know in whose position i would put him but his song is really good. I heard people commenting on the melody comparing it with “THE BRAKES” but almost every year scrunter has the same melody so i guess this year he has to examine himself and check where he went wrong.

Like the judges, most of the people commenting here know very little about calypso and for the most part are very biased. i sense a lot of hate for any calypsonian who sings any song which appears to praise the government, while any song with the words, corruption, bobol or the like seem to be an automatic favourite and so-called ‘good calypso’. We really need to set aside those petty biases. To all those people who are attacking scrunter because he sang for the government and helped get them back in power, this is not the right forum and manner to do this. After all this is a man who has taken the crown on three occasions already and the election results is still 18-3 and no amount of government bashing calypsoes in the finals can change that. That having been said, I believe that his song lacked enough creativity and ‘calypso energy’ to have made it to the finals and as such I have no problems with his non-inclusion on the list. Dady Chess to my mind has one of the best calypsoes in the competition and only those too accostumed and blinded by the usual ‘political, government-bashing calypsoes’ could say otherwise. Those saying that Explosion should not have made it to the finals know NOTHING about calypso. This is easily one of the best songs in the competition. I guess many here who only are interested in jumping and waving and ofcourse controversy would obviously find Sye song appealing, however in my mind, while I am not opposed to the message since I believe that all ills in society should be tackled within a calypso, I do not believe that Sye brought out the message in the best way. The song is too crude, even bodering on ‘vulgar’. Sye need to better the art of masking. I don’t think that song should be in the finals. Soul Puss, Tasha-P, Checker, Observer and certainly Lady Star deserved their places. I thought Lady Star has probably the best composition of the competition that i’ve heard thus far and should be a strong contender for the crown with a good second song. In my mind The Bobb, with his sweet voice and all, doesn’t have a calypso worthy of being in the finals. The song frankly is very boring and lacks creativity. There shouldn’t be any discussions why Prosper and Yakima are not in the finals. These two cannot sing don’t matter how good the song you give them. They are not calysonians, just trying a thing. Finally, I am still trying to comprehend how any judge in his right mind could not find a place in the finals for Beno and Getto Prince.

I must say that this season has no umph in it. Some good songs but a lot lacking. As far as I am concerned this is anybody’s year and the king stands a good chance of a repeat if he delivers and has a second good song (Heard a little of one he sang on Haiti). The judges decision is final as they say but it seemed nobody listened to Ghetto Prince. Did he sing too early for the judges? To me that was one of the better performers. We need to cut the judges some slack too because apparently some of the finalist they chose (Tarsha P (good song), Sye, Soul Pous etc..) we are happy with and some they left out (Scrunter (my favorite calypsonian of all time) we are happy with so being the imperfect beings that they are like the rest of us some variations are to be expected that we either like or dislike.
Lacking also this season was variety. With the exception of dear Tarsha P and a few others, EVERYBODY sang about politics. While this is a GREAT part of calypso (that[‘s how we patrons get to know the happenings and I love it) but the information was stale and irrelevant to an extent because we already had election. These issues were on the radio everyday. The writers/calypsonians should be able to be more flexible in cases like these because obviously nobody catered for elections been called before carnival. The commentary was topical but nobody could give the same topics a post election spin so you found that those songs seemed outdated and irrelevant before we heard them. We will all remember what Brakes did with Tou pa tou when Rosie won–he made the song current, better than it ever was (opinion). That gave the song new life and patrons loved it. Was that one of Musician’s masterpieces?
Before I close I must say what I have said before. Give Jack his jacket and Jacqueline her lipstick when they deserve it. Musician had a lot of songs in the semis (14) but the messengers were missing/lacking. To reiterate DA Man in Boston’s comment earlier, YES calypso IS bigger than DICE (and I may add Pat) but calypso is surely “much BIGGER with DICE”. That’s a messenger is ‘apas les otre’. Good luck to the finalists anyways. There may be a dark horse this year. How about a lady? Well “we go see” I WILL be listening.

Explosion should be in the finals. His is an example of TRUE calypso. Witty, well-masked, hitting the issues.
But i guess like everything else, you dominicans like everything spoon-fed to all you. Wouldn’t recognise wit, sarcasm, commentary, irony in a calypso even if it came and bite all you on all you a$$. Keep listening to his calypso, maybe all you will get it after the 20th listening.

Tasha P, while she must have gotten alot of points for clarity and rendition, the lyrics were more what i would expect from a ‘female calypso monarch show’, like what they used to have in the 80’s, just bashing men.
Congrats to all the finalists! The competition was tight- I glad I did not have to judge. And for the people who said that Explosion should not be in the finals, YOU DO NOT KNOW CALYPSO. I am a avid fan of Karessa, but I was extremely impressed with Exploration – tight lyrics, crafty, witty. I think it got everything of a real good calypso. A lot of Dominicans just seems to be blown away by the ‘jumpy’ music and look over the other important integral elements of the calypso.

Congrats to you Soul Puss. Told you that you would be a finalist this year! And what of Beno? High injustice to that calypsonian. That is not fair. Daddy Chess and Explosion should not be there before Beno. That calypso is so sweet and well put together. And Yakima, my girl that is just not fair. Yakima and Beno should be there instead of Daddy Chess and explosion.

hmmmm its very interesting to see all these comments, i listened to the entire show, and i can only imagine some of the performaces. First of all let me say excellent job to all of you. now i was most impressed with LADY STAR, OBSERVER and SOUL PUSS, these were my top three…i dont see comments that lady star ahould not be in however no one commends this young lady, i think it is her 5th year and she has grown in the business the child is on levels of singing sandra…clearly she is the biggest woman this year in this and some of these men should look out for her. that song lyrically is very strong but she performs it i hear it in her voice, i heard the comments about her presentation adn i can only imagine. you all praise the new people and thats good but never forget the old ones who we know are in it for love like her, i dont know her personally but a friend of mine says she is maybe one of the most down to earth person and a great performer.
Soul puss you were great, i proud of you and observer was wonderful too…but Lady star get a good second song and do your thing i think you will do well and dont worry abotu tthe people who are not giving you some praises for your good work.
Tasha P you were great but i think the song is kinda junior- ish and you sing it like a little sing along but you have the crowd on your side for all kinda reason so good luck too.

Ok, this is my two pence. As a calypso fanatic, I will have my say about the semi finals. There is no way you could please everybody but my God, how did Beno not place? The only thing that makes me feel better is the fact that SCRUNTER got to check himself and see where he went wrong. He needs a breath of fresh air. This is the same tune for years. It is just too complacent. Explosion’s calypso is de real thing. If you know calypso, this is one. Sye, my boy, not even a whole nation station could keep you down. Tell Orelious ..!!! My greatest pleasure for the night was my cuz Soul Puss. That man persevered. He deserved it twice before and now three times is a charm. He could sing and like Checker, he keeps coming back again and again. I know Chess is going to give Karessa a run in the judging department. We know where the judges are from and we know that already puts King Karessa at a disadvantage. My advice, sing like a king, perform like a monarch and take it home like a victor.
We need new judges that can take the Kaiso to a whole new level! As a former judge I think it was GROSS injustice, neglience and disrespect that Ghetto Prince and Beno were so trested. Shame!!!

Congratulation to all who made the finals but I must say u guys have to try much harder than that to be able to take the crown from the LORD KARRESAH because what I heard wasnt that great, any way we have to accept the JUDGES decision like it or not. Daddy Chess song was not in the canival team of things this year and should not be in the finals but it is. KARRESAH who has the voice of the MIGHTY SPARROW will be trying to keep his crown for a second time and I think he will. I must convey a special congratulation to SOUL PUSS he is trying very hard he just need his voice to be tuned properly once that is done he will move to the next level, So good luck to all of u and I will be listening> We in the DIASPORA who couldnt come home this year will be listening …….

Observer?? ….he apparently did some voice training, bottom line. That song is poor and not delivered well. Observer no place in finals.
Beno did so well….where did he go wrong?? in the judges mind that is? it was definately a shock to the crowd. Also…Yakima? great calypso……maybe delivery not her best…but?? come on one of the hottest for the season.
As much as I like Chess, this year he is not as strong as his potential allows and to what we are accustomed. Many people have voiced displeasure with Explosion being included, but, the guy can sing, his song is well thought out and perfectly delivered…….What should be examined here is the JUDGES…. some of them have no place at the judges table. Come on association, … Clean up the judges quickly, you guys have 2 weeks.

Thank God Scrunter is out of the finals. He came on stage – no probs with a boring rendition, and thought that he would just walked into the finals like he usually does with absolutely nothing. Not this time scrunter. You were too busy touring in St.Kitts – blame yourself partner….check where you go wrong. Maybe if you added a little verse to that effect you would have scrapped your way through the finals. See you at the finals scrunter – but this time you will be on the ground like me.

I listen on the net, so i could not see.but i can tell from what i hear from the com -ment-haters and de performers, seems like a good show, but boy! how are we going to the next level in calypso with these kind of treatment? or are we going to the next level down? if so then the selection was good.But if the next level is up, then we are f^c%* Up.That show was too tight for the decision to come so quick.there should have been a little consoltation frist, to show that the judges thought this through.some people don’t have to be there every year good or bad as judges favor, we need to give jack his jacket, not john, if he does not deserved it . Forget” PAT” reward the performer for his ACT. thoese who were there can attest to that. there is favorism going on between the tents, (that just my nonsense)However the “semi” might just be better than the finals,because better acts were left out that are in… I might come down.

the show was good but honestly Bobb and Explosion should be replaced with Benno and Della…yakima had a good performance but her voice went way off towards the end of the song which i think cost her a place in the top 10………Tasha P, Sye, Checker, and Observer were the best last night….great show.will be at the finals to see karressa take his crown back to Marigot
This is why I will not be coming down there again the judging panel and carnival organisers need to be changed, not the dates. Congrats to Tasha and the Checker. That liat ting there have no place in the finals this year sorry to say.
Every year I listen to the Calypso over the internet in preperation for my trip home and I must say that I am very disappointed with this years judgement, among the finalists The Beno, Yarkima should have been entered. The thrill of my trip is lost and like the few other people i have spoken to I am now thinking of changing plans for the trip. Congratulations to The Checker and Tasha P on their accomplishment. well look a very interesting, yet dumb finals. the only people that have some real calypsos are Tasha P, Sye and Lord Karessa. And honestly, with a line up like that Karessa taking that crown back to Marigot. He sang last year that the crown doesn’t leave Roseau…well look it…He will have to sing next year that he take the crown from Roseau twice in a row. Daddy Chess being in the finals is questionable. Claypso is about social commentary, sacarsm, cynicism and wit. Daddy Chess song has some social commentary but it lacking in the other categories. So my bet is on Karessa with Dog-Last, just hoping his second song is good. Tasha P is good but based on interactions with her I think she can do much more vocally…other than that her song is great. Proper execution on finals night will be key for her to place!
I found Scrunter performed very well. Big up to him. He should have been one of the nine.

I am indeed pleased for soul puss, there’s something about his voice that’s not refined yet catchy. I am happy for sye. Don’t think there are enough women but such is life. I am gratified that scrunter will be out this year….time to retire me thinks.
Anyhoo, I shall not be attending the finals. That’s a $60 I could use to buy rice, sugar, milk,you know that kinda stuf…..more profitable.

great show the judges did a good enough job….but only nine could go..However i don,t really see anybody dethroning the reigning monarch ..unless he messes up badly.
Daddy Chess should not have made it. Like the scrunter he should be in the audience during the finals if he wants to be there. Prosper was a better pick even if he messed up a verse.
Obsever should have been another casualty. That song he sang kissing the PM behind makes no sense and was out of rythm. For a minute I thought he was receiting a poem. He should have been replaced with Beno. But as said before, may the spirit of the ancestors be pleased

I would like to congratulate all those who advanced to the finals though I think there was some injustice done in the judging.

That judging was real nonsense. How can you explain putting Explosion in the finals with his grace, mercy & peace song which I think is nonsense and the performance was dead, while a young talent like Beno singing a song we can all relate to ‘same mistake’ and he performed well, yet still his neck was cut? dat no make sense! Beno should have been in & Explosion should have been OUT!
Daddy Chess should have been cut to. Only rich people that travelling that can relate to his song while that Liat drama have nothing to do with poor people. And each time he perform the song is like he just singing it cause he know he going to the finals. That wasn’t no performance lastnite.

Daddy Chess song and performance truly didn’t deserve to be in the finals @ all. The judges just made him advance because of his popularity and he in the business for some time now. That was pure injustice to the other calypsonians and the fans.
