Dominicans and other CARICOM nationals have an opportunity to participate in a song competition organized by CARICOM as part of activities to commemorate its 40th Anniversary in July this year.
The aim of the competition is to engender the full participation of CARICOM nationals in composing and selecting a CARICOM song which will be used at official functions including Meetings of CARICOM Heads of Government and at international events.
The winner will receive a cash award of US$10,000. The first runner up will receive a cash award of US$5,000 while the second runner up will receive US$2,500. Other participants in the top ten will be publicly acknowledged.
According to a release from the Cultural Division, entries to the competition should, have a strong Caribbean cultural flavour and rhythm, inspire a sense of regional pride and unity and should invoke a blessing and or evoke or celebrate the history, tradition and struggles of Caribbean peoples.
Competing songs should also have versatility and lend themselves to be played by various instruments such as stringed, steel pan, keyboard, percusssion and woodwind and be sung.
In addition, songs should have the characteristics of an anthem and should be memorable with popular and emotional appeal.
The competition, to be staged over four months, will comprise a preliminary round, to be coordinated by the Directors of Culture in the Ministries of Culture, a semi-final round from which a panel of regional experts will choose ten songs, the top three of which will be selected for final judging.
Entry forms and further information about the rules of the competition can be obtained from the Division of Culture at the Old Mill Cultural Centre in Canefield and DBS Radio.
Completed entries from Dominican nationals should be submitted to the Division of Culture no later than April 30, 2013.
The winning song will be launched at the 34th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community to be held in July 2013 in Trinidad and Tobago.
