Minister for Energy Rayburn Blackmoore says government is optimistic about development of geothermal energy in Dominica

Blackmoore told media here Friday geothermal energy is “our greatest hope in renewable energy”, and that Dominica is “right ahead” in developing the resource.

“The last time I was in Miami at this renewable energy conference and reference was made about Dominica because we are right ahead in terms of developing that resource,” he pointed out.

Government has announced that efforts to maximize the country’s geothermal potential are beginning to come to life with the exploration of geothermal energy resource in Wotten Waven due to start in July.

Geothermal energy development is to give Dominica a more reliable and affordable source of energy and reduce its dependence on oil.

Dominica has been told that it’s likely to be affected by rising oil prices.

Empty vessels make the most noise. Sounds very much like night landing. Why doesn’t the government not say anything at all until it really is happening. I’d have a whole lot more faith.

Well I have some money and would like to invest in this exciting venture to. So its for all of us D/cans. If I don’t have enough money I will seek to get a loan like the others. We all will take one big loan. How about that?

Just once I would like to see concrete proof of all these projects these ministers keep talking about. Please more ground breaking and completion ceremonies less promises of things to come.

      February 27, 2011

Well they are making these promises and breaking ground early so we have about 3.5 years to see if the projects will come through. In the past these promises were during election campaign or at the Govt. last year before election. I will give them the benefit of the doubt now. Lets wait and see and hope for the best.

I guess you think that exploring for Geothermal is like putting together a Charcaol Pit? You haters of the DLP must be real. This is not an initiative that is cheap or that can be rushed for political expediency. This is serious scientific and dangerous exploration and we must be real with our comments on these issues. The Minister is not the scientist involved in the exploration he can ONLY say report on what he has and cannot give us definite dates and timelines BUT again once we hate the DLP we can post these sort on unintelligent comments and thats being patriotic RIGHT? Peace.

Bearing in mind that the world is facing ever increasing oil prices I believe this is an absolute MUST for Dominica. Furthermore this is a renewable source of ‘green’ energy thus fitting Dominica’s image. The same way some nations generate massive income for its people from selling oil, Dominica should tap in it’s few natural resources to generate income for the state and its people. Having said that, these licenses should not be given away for a few dollars (see water export) to foreigners but instead the government should invest and control this for the benefit of all Dominicans. Dominica should not have any problems getting finance and grants for this project.
The only question I have the government: why is it taking so long to get this of the ground? All I hear is constant talk and very little action!

Great, I am looking forward to the day when we will be in charge of our energy. Is West Indies Power still doing the exploratory work? Will government be selling shares to nationals? I hope so.

Thats a great step to using our natural resources for dependence. Dominica has sent students abroad to study Thermal Energy Enginering…..Lets go for it. The economy and the village wotten waven will prosper from this move. Some people should get out the jungle way of thinking…( oh do mess with de sulphur … is trouble all you looking for)…lol…..Like it or not times are changing. The next step mr Minister would be harnessing wind energy. Dominica has many mountains and it’s windy as hell there.

    February 26, 2011

I am happy for the efforts of all those involved; politicians, engineers, civil servants etc. Being proactive is a Great Idea. We used our water resource in the past and led in hydro electricity now we are venturing out to use our Geo-active status to provide for more efficient energy for our people. Again i say, Great move. I wish this project all the success. Has my full support.

“…. exploration of geothermal energy resource in Wotten Waven ”

Exploration in Wotten Waven is almost like shoot fish in a barrel. Being an active zone, all they need to do is dig a hole anywhere in the area. lol.

I’m confident that the Christian brothers have more funds than the government to finance this project. This group of US based Dominicans to include the Etienne boy, Dr. Finn and others have their own money waiting for the government to grant them exclusive right to the Island’s natural resources and then we will see real development.

Sampson will prove to Maynard that he is a real investor when he make his contribution and that he can do without Skerrit’s handout.

Apparently you have some secret funds for these guys. They Doh Have Money.

Is not penny hape-nee to test/drill/build.

They need to show the money and they doh have it.

They wanted to get the license from Gov’t and sell it to highest bidder.

They were never going to drill or explore….profit on us without lifting a finger

In case you just started reading DNO, do a search and see that an article was posted recently by DNO stating that there is a project underway for this in the Wotten Waven area.

FYI – Mr. British Army – Wotten Waven (Vallay) is part of the Roseau Valley.
