More earthquake activity not unusual to Dominica

Residents can expect that the frequency of earthquakes on island will not be an unusual happening.

The Seismic Research Centre of the University of the West Indies in Trinidad recorded two earthquakes last night with a magnitude of 2.7 on the Richter scale.

According to local National Disaster Coordinator Nathaniel Isaac, the earthquakes occurred at about 9:40 p.m. They were felt one minute apart in the south of the island.

“They [Seismic Research Centre] have indicated that it is … not an unusual event for Dominica. Because of the nature of Dominica’s volcanic island from time to time we will feel these events,” Isaac explained.

However, he assured the public that there is no need to worry.

“We have structures in place to deal with earthquakes, but we have to understand with an earthquake we will not be aware what is going to happen [as compared to] a hurricane,” Isaac said.

The research centre indicated that preliminary results may vary “when additional data is processed”.

This is the second such activity to occur within a two-week period. On August 16, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.9 occurred southeast of Dominica.

    @Gene, Toronto:

    Exactly, it was a ridiculous comment to mirror some of the equally ridiculous comments that some none thinking people post to this site. The only difference is that my comment was purely tongue-in-cheek whereas many others are serious which is what I find worrying.

    It was a purely lighthearted comical jesture to hopefully prod the heavies out there to lighten-up and be a little more unified and show intelligence.

    This is one beautiful place and will only progress and be able to withstand any catastrophe or hardship if we are together. A house divided against itself cannot stand which will only benefit vultures!

    Peace.

    Patat I like the way the earthquake shook your head boy.

    The left and right sides of your brain were competing, one side for DLP and the other for good governance.

    You angered many readers with this piece as you touched many raw nerves both of the UWP and the DLP. Ofcourse it was masked by suggesting that your comments were of-topic – true to a large extent but I for one got the message you were sharing.

    Glad to see as a DLP supporter you are wrestling with your conscience. You need to take the next step and tell your PM exactly what is causing your restlessness with your moral compass.

    The majority of us are in one accord, and that is good. By the words of Jesus Christ His disciples told us that at the time of His return to this world, God Almighty will show us many signs.

    In the days of Noah, He also showed the people a great sign. They saw that Noah was building an ark; but did they take heed of what Noah was doing? Of course not! Perhaps they laughed at him or called him crazy. Of course there was no government, for the people to blame Noah’s action on their authority in office; like a few of us doing about everything that is taking place in our lives.

    But Jesus told His disciples that the people continued in their practice of eating and drinking, they continued with their practice of getting married and giving their children into marriage. They never stopped their feasts of worldly pleasure and lust “until the flood came and took them all away”.

    I am glad to read that the majority of us in Dominica are God fearing people and that we are looking for the signs of the second coming of Jesus Christ. Let us give thanks to God that He is only causing us to wake up from our deadly sleep, through a strong wind and an earth tremor that only causes a shake to our houses or make us believe it is thunder. Some people even reported they we slept right through the whole thing. Earthquakes, landslide, and floods are killing people, or damaging their homes and other areas of living, by the thousands in other parts of the world. It is too late for those who die without the Life of Salvation in Jesus Christ.

    We are responsible to prepare ourselves for the second coming of Jesus Christ. Our preparation is to repent–surrender to God, in Jesus Christ, that He might renew our minds by faith. This must happen to us before we die, or before Jesus comes back. The decision must be made right now, this hour, today.

    The day that Jesus returns He will simply change us who are still alive, and raise those of us who are dead, to live forever, with the condition or our mind–spiritual or carnal. It is your choice. Do not be someone whom Jesus will change to live forever with a carnal mind.

    The only way you can avoid this mishap is by maintaining the conducts and attitude of faith, trust, humility and obedience to God and His Love in the Person of Jesus Christ. My prayers are in your behalf–my family and all people of my homeland, Dominica. May God’s compassion and mercy remain with us all. Amen!

    @Dominican:
    You are so correct! Just pray to God to always assist us and protect us.
    In June there was an earthquake in Toronto. It registered 5.0. I happened to be indoors at that time and alone performing some household chores. At around 1.30 pm I decided to make a salad. I had just finished making it. I was still standing in front of the kitchen sink. For some reason I observed the sink and wall moving. I was mesmerized. I wondered what was going on. I turned to the back and noticed the stove, fridge and wall moving. Then I turned to my left into a hallway where I had a stand with some items on it and saw the stand moving. Then the thought occurred to me, “It is an earthquake.” I do hope it was the Holy Spirit or my Guardian Angel who informed me that it was an earthquake. Immediately I thought that I have to get out of here. Of course, I prayed to Our Lord Jesus Christ and said: “O My Lord, help me and have mercy on me.” I said a prayer to the Divine Mercy.
    I went into another room where there was a tall floor fan and noticed it was moving. I turned it off. I did not consider entering the living room for I was concerned in getting out. After having done that I noticed that the shaking subsided. I tuned to a local TV Station and heard that there was an earthquake.
    This earthquake originated from the Province of Quebec, Canada and travelled to Ontario and to certain parts of the US.
    No damage was done in Ontario. We were fortunate. Quebec got some damage.
    This is not the first time there was an earthquake in Toronto. This is the fourth time in a few years. However, there have been some small ones in other areas before and after this earthquake. This one was the worst that I experienced and it scared me. Toronto is in an earthquake zone.
    I tried to access the relevant Website later in the evening and noticed that there was a request for those who felt the earthquake to fill out a form and give additional details. That evening I tried doing that and hoped that they received my information.
    This information was to assist them in earthquake preparedness. So much for that.
    Only last week I read that their Website had crashed that day/evening and that they have repaired the problem in the event there is another earthquake.
    Well, what with Internet many people tried to access the Website. I did not do so during the day but later in the evening. I listened to the TV News.
    Strange, electricity did not go off. TV and radio reception did not go off and also computer access.
    I thought I would move to another location before another one comes which may be worst but who knows when and where. We cannot foretell those disasters, they occur when we least expect.
    Only God can assist us in times of disasters. He knows who will be affected or not. Keep in mind what Our Lord said: “…It comes like a thief in the night.”
    God bless!

    @BEST INTEREST:
    Patat (no doubt not a real name – makes me laugh and the responses) is surprised to hear of earthquakes and where they are coming from? This may be due to the warming of the earth. Who knows? You are correct! We need to be spiritually prepared for accidents, injuries and death which could occur at any time, when we least expect it. As St. Paul said: “One second we are wishing each other peace and security. Then in another second everything breaks loose.”
    Our Lord Jesus Christ said: “Stay awake! Pray and do not faint!” However, are we all ready?” One thing we do know is that, whoever calls on the Name of the Lord will be saved.
    The same thing. We do not know when God will rain down His fire and brimstone on the entire earth.
    We observe, hear and read about what is occurring in the world. Immorality of every nature is let loose and rampant.
    I have considered that our patient God is angry but one day He will be angry enough and say: “That is it. I have had enough of those disobedient earthlings whom I created and who do not know what is best for them.
    Many have no respect and love for Me and for some of my other children. They do not worship Me. Some have ceased doing so. They possess all sorts of ideologies and make it known to others, leading my children astray which are against My Commandments and expectations. He will say: “It is time to call them for their judgment.” Mark my words. It may not come during our lifetime but it will come. Only God knows when.

    “We have structures in place to deal with earthquakes, but we have to understand with an earthquake we will not be aware what is going to happen as compared to a hurricane,” Isaac said. Ok, I would really retract that statement.

    Anyways, there is nothing we can do about an earthquake. Unlike a hurricane there is no warning therefore we cannot prepare. What we need to do is be prepared spiritually. There is no structure which is earthquake proof. Some may survive better than others but if the earth splits open, there is nothing we can do. Brothers and sisters live your life right, for the end of times is near.

    AA, while d ground dere shaking , we were just there talking about those villas that those investigative journalist and blue ribbon forensics unearthing as if they be big time archeologists that discover things that were hidden underground all d time. Stuppes

    Well from all reports nothing doh happen to those villas dem that most get a tiny view on honest Dominica – not even a picture on d walls shift. Only d garbage bins dem that touch each other and d motion sensors dem pick up on d movement but d alarm dem give just a little quack . D fire sprinklers dem ok; d smoke detectors dem ok; d food disposer dem all right; d garbage compactor dem well install; d ac dem blowing cool and nice, d hot water working in d safe temperature range, d faucets dem not leaking – Moen Faucets buy it for looks , buy it for quality leaved up to its name and reputation. De Delta faucets dem all right as well. D Ethan Allen Furniture dem doh get no scratch in any room. D Kitchen Granite Countertops and d Granite tops for d vanity dem ok as well. D baseboards, d chair rails, d ceiling details, as well as d ash gray marble tiles that layout in diamond style had no damage whatsoever. D drive ways dem and swimming pool dem all ok as well. Doors and windows checked out ok too. And flat screen TV gym equipment , microwave , stove, fridge walk in closet , shower glass doors and tub surround and roof all ok as well.
    Well papa , Ms. Sing name is Superior in truth! Attention to detail and high quality material selection make me patat conclude that dem villas be impressive!!! It have a nice house above Auto Trade and that maybe over three million dollars by itself. So dem combined cottages dere must be a cool ten million dollars.
    And that would get any politician that in opposition or just a political activist to grudge an allege Minister in Government. Man to see you were in government and u did boast for everybody that YOU in charge den get thrown out in less than five years and never get your “prize” for being in charge like stone crusher facility must make any man get on d way you getting on dere!!! All your acolytes dem must lend you a hand especially when they dem self had their six cottages over ten years ago and to see AID Bank selling them off one by one and u still owing AID Bank, and Credit Union for dem said cottages that in wood and can no way compare to dem upscale villas in Savanne.
    But is only Athie I can have respect for when he make his statements about good governance , cause Athie never stay as a minister in his 31 years as a public figure for over two years. Athie on average spent 9 months each in d Interim Government of 1979 and another 9 months in Rosie Administration in 2000. Everything you see Athie have is hard work and not paying his debts on time due to cash flow problems he experiences like d rest of ordinary Dominicans who doh have wealthy parents or grandparents.
    Right is right and wrong must always be wrong and must to condemn. For we all will be considered hypocrites not only by our contemporaries and persons who do not share our political views at this time but worse by our own children and by history! Our institutions and all our people must stand up and say openly which values we subscribe to and which we reject. All public figures must declare their true assets and liabilities and it must reconcile with their Income Tax returns.
    It appears that the Caribbean over many persons in political life tend to have a second passport or actively seek to have a second passport. That must be examined in detail and a call for papers to enlighten the masses should be undertaken as to the true reasons. Can it be for evasion of taxes and hiding of wealth? Can it be for self imposed exile? Can it be to avoid victimization and extradition? Is it for better health care? Educational opportunities for their children that home do not have? Do we as Caribbean countries have weak constitutions and weak institutions where good governance and accountability are concerned?
    We are Dominicans first then supporters of the Dominica Labor Party and must be true to our National Anthem which calls on all of us to strive for honor Sons and Daughters, do the right, be firm, and be fair. Our National Anthem calls upon us to toil – in other words by your sweat and hard work (legitimate that is) we shall make a better life for ourselves and Dominica by extension. Cause easy come, easy go! So when d next time d earth shake and things start to rock and root out of place but our lives are spared we will rebuild honestly and look towards our National Anthem for our motivation and moral guidance.
    We will talk about resignations and our judicial impartiality a next time.
